love that on a card with THREE title fights, Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei is the main event.

all that aside, this looks like a good card. will be watching.

That's Bellator in a nutshell though. Why even pretend that the belts are a priority?

It would be interesting to see how Mayweather vs. McGregor affects this card. It's that 100 dollars then this show becomes very expendable. Last I heard, they were hoping for 200k buys. I think it probably settles at around 90k-100k.

I think you are giving people too much credit, most sports fans don't plan out their event spending two months in advance. Maybe a week in advance but that's about it :)  But I do agree with your range estimate either way.

No, I usually agree with that especially with UFC PPVs. The last two or three days leading up to the PPV (including the day of the fight) is what matters. However, using the May/Pac PPV as the example,  a huge record breaking PPV has an effect on the entire PPV industry when it comes to customers picking and choosing. Something like this show, which was only going to have a limited number of eyeballs on it anyway, just had some of their business chopped away automatically.

There are five major PPVs in combat sports between today and mid September. This is the least important one just because it comes on the heels of a major announcement. That's dominating the news still when Bellator is putting on supposedly their biggest show of the year. I know it hurt the Ward vs. Kovalev rematch, and that needed all the help it could get too.

Okay, here's where we traditionally separate the hardcore MMA fans from the casuals. We're being offered a pair of freakshows that theoretically  should having us turning our collective noses up and seeking out the NEXT BIG THING, who is probably fighting at a reservation casino for fifty bucks cash and fifty bucks free play. But let's get real, we're likely going to hit the pub on the other side of town to watch Money scamper around avoiding getting hit by Conor for the duration of the fight. It won't be pretty, it won't even be interesting, but we're still going to go and drink over-priced micro brews with a bunch of hipsters whom we would normally cross the street to avoid talking to because we're hardcore MMA fans and we're stupid like that.

Now as for this Bellator nonsense with a brutal striker facing a so-so wrestler, (gee, wonder what will happen here?). Let's admit it, we're going to watch this PPV,  not to see if the Last Emperor can pull off a successful farewell tour, not to see what should be a good fight between Chandler and Primus, no, those are interesting questions that will get answered, but what will get us to shell out our hard earned cash is the opportunity to see the Axe Murderer pound Chael's face into a blood pudding.

I do love that Bellator has dropped the pretense that their titles have any sort of meaning whatsoever

It should be noted that during the actual weigh-ins in the morning, a prelim fighter tried to pull a Cormier and it didn't work out. That fact the he tried to do this with a bunch of cameras in the room is bold. Stupid but bold.

Coker said, "To me, any [buy rate] in the mid-200,000s would be respectable. And anything in the 300,000s would be considered a big hit.

seems like awfully high expectations. i don't follow the buyrate game too closely, but i'd expect it to top out around 135k. 150k wouldn't surprise me, but anything over that has to be considered a win (not taking into account the payroll for this event).

Heather Hardy clearly wore eyeliner to the fight. New York commission keeps it professional, y'all. Looking forward to Chael fighting in Billy Graham sunglasses, Wanderlei with an actual axe

I have the broadcast on mute, and I was trying to figure out what that was. That seems like something the WWE would have people doing if they ran a MMA promotion.

Meltz has been talking about this kid for a long time. I was excited to see what he could do. Now I know he can get rocked in like 10 seconds and choked out by some dude.

That too was unfortunate. MMA referees are generally just so bad.

Does anyone know how fighting works?

Any injury caused by non illegal means where the referee has to stop the fight is a TKO win instantly.

Don't sometimes they have the doctor check a cut even by legal means if they fear it is obscuring vision? I mean clearly this wasn't that and was a bad call. Not sure how referees don't know the rules.
