RIPPA
Two things 1) there is a Split thread around here somewhere (or maybe it is in the horror thread) if you want to see other people's thoughts 2) the movie studio itself is blatantly promoting what the twist is now since they are already promoting the sequel
caley
xXX: Return of Xander Cage: Honestly one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. There are scenes that defy basic physics, the dialogue seems to have been written by Vin Diesel as all the females characters seems to have lines complimenting him or his physique and it's the most consequence-free big action movie I've ever seen YET... the last half hour is a blast with Tony Jaa and Donnie Freaking Yen kicking all kinds of ass, tons of bullets flyin and ridiculous stunts and cameos so I cant completely say not to watch it. Curt McGirt
T2 Trainspotting was really good. The story takes very little from Porno -- I can barely even say it shares that story's skeleton. The acting is of course spot on, the editing and cinematography are awesome, the soundtrack doesn't live up to the first but it has nods to it and some other good songs. Time and loss, trying to make sense of them and move on, are the major themes and there are moments that will just wreck you. Not to say it isn't funny when it wants to be, but it's serious as a heart attack. Highly recommended for any fan of the original (and if you haven't seen that first, it's mandatory). The only misstep they really make in it is shoehorning Kelly Macdonald in with an unresolved plot device. One of the funniest parts is Spoiler an escaped Franco and his son have a hot TV and they go to fence it. It's your classic "the garage door opens and closes" deal. Well, the garage door opens and standing there in a black suit is Mikey fucking Forrester (Irvine Welsh) as the fence I also have to say, if they actually HAD made Porno, it would've been a better movie, though it would have been twice as long and NC-17. Curt McGirt
After I saw it was on I had to stay up til 3 and watch Drug War again. That movie is nuts. The only problem I had with the end battle is, really, just HOW long did it take for the backup to arrive? That was unrealistic, to say the least. caley
Watched Cast Away somehow I had never seen this. i have a friend who references it all the time but because of my dislike of 'Forrest Gump', I had convinced myself over a number of years ago that I disliked Tom Hanks' serious movies (Love 'The Burbs' and 'The Ladykillers') and Robert Zemeckis movies. Than I watched 'Contact' and went "Oh I do like Zemeckis after all" and a fairly recent re-watch of 'A Hologram For the King' reminded me that I actually liked Hanks too (The movie's not great, but he's terrific), so I decided to finally seek this out. It was good. I thought it was basically a giant ad for Fed-Ex and it was, but apparently not one that they were paid for (Zemeckis insists Fed Ex never paid them anything). Hanks is incredible, of course, but, in a way, it's almost quaint. I mean, a movie like this, with long stretches without dialogue and one that's so sad making $233 MILLION doesn't seem like it would have a chance were it to come out today. Joshy: Joshy's a guy who's engaged to be married, goes to the gym to work out, comes back and finds his fiancee has killed herself. A few months later, unable to get the deposit back on a house he'd rented for a bachelor party weekend, he decides to go ahead with it and invites his friends for a guys weekend hang-out. Attendance is sparse, others are recruited, low-level debauchery is initiated. This is one of those mumblecore dramadies that is largely improvised that I love so much a la 'Drinking Buddies' and the cast is absolutely massive: Thomas Middleditch is the titular Joshy, Adam Pally is his friend, Nick Kroll is another friend who wants to turn up the mayhem and brings along Brett Gelman as another damaged guy to help things out. Jenny Slater, Aubrey Plaza, Lauren Graham, Alison Brie, Paul Reiser round out the cast with medium to tiny parts. I liked it a lot.
