SDL Is Chekov's Water Gun - 5/23/2017

I only saw the second half live, but I caught the rest on DVR this morning..  Very solid show.

Jinder's celebration was as extravagant as I expected, but his promo skills are still pretty weak. If he's going to continue to work the evil foreigner gimmick and repeat the same stuff, he at least needs to find a decent catchphrase.

I don't think you can be too outrageous with this gimmick.  He needs women clad in orange dropping lotus petals at his feet every time he enters the ring.  Work the royalty gimmick until it hurts.

The booking for the Fashion Police / Usos is really smart.  Let Tyler and Fandango get singles wins to prove their worth and then put the Usos over clean to show that the sum total is greater than the parts.

I feel like the only thing this segment was missing was, at the end, when Shane was holding the water gun, they should have had James Ellsworth come in to complain about something, then have Shane shoot him with the watergun.

I found it amusing that 90% of the words Jinder spoke in "his language" were in English. I really hope they don't do a women's MITB match. Their roster is paper thin in terms of talent with two good workers and a few decent ones. Plus Becky has a history of concussions and doesn't need to be near ladders being thrown around by women with no experience working with them.

Are we going to talk about how much more over AJ was than Nakamura? Nak was playing FIP and the fans were chanting for AJ. I really don't think there's much of a NXT fan base crossover these days. Alpha has never been over on SDL after being a really over act in NXT.

Styles was the most over face in the company while he was still a heel; he's going to get most or all of the chants regardless of who else is around. (Cena and Reigns are the only two who get equal reactions--though "mixed"--and Styles benefited from working both extensively.) There is certainly work to be done, carrying over the pop Nak's entrance gets to the matches, but I think it'll come. Styles wasn't getting these reactions right away either. (Though broadly speaking, you're right that NXT success doesn't mean main roster crowds will always treat you like a huge deal.)

Dammit I want New Day to win Money in the Bank. Not Big E, not Kofi, not Xavier. New Day. And I want them to Freebird the briefcase, win the title and defend it Freebird style.

not terribly interested in them as tag champs again.

Two years back when Owens burst onto the scene, he was the prizefighter. He only wrestled when there was something in it for him. Then one week they threw him into a Smackdown tag main event on the heel side.  That was the moment he became just another guy.

They need to decide sooner rather than later what they want Nak to be. Is he a special attraction with a unique aura or someone who will fill up the last 25 minutes of Smackdown in a nothing match.

Actually Owens still is still mostly involved in prize worthy matches. Most of his time, he has been champion or going for a championship, or in a match that involves him getting in a position for a championship. He is in a do nothing tag match most of the time because it involves build-up to a championship match or defense. Most of the time that he has been in the WWE, he had a strap. Most of his feuds revolved around championships. So they have been fairly consistent with that part of his characterization.

But I do agree that they need to find something for Nak's character and more importantly, find Nak better and more receptive opponents.

Wasn't Rusev supposed to come back and confront Shane last night?

Smashville's in the Stanley Cup Finals.  Shane's idiocy can go screw for the next 2-3 weeks.

This was Ursula Andress'  costume from Casino Royale (the good one) in which she was supposed to ride an elephant. They rewrote the scene but still had her wear it when she first met David Niven.

I want Jinder Mahal to be champion for a year at least.

So here's a piece of news, the ratings for last night were up back over 2.3 million despite going against Celtics/Cavs which did over 7 million. It's not a big number but it shows interest at least and I'm tying it directly to Jinder Mahal.

Also, Jinder's celebration is the most watched clip of the week for WWE on YouTube.

I'm not sure if this means anything but nobody right now can call it a failure.
