Twin Peaks

At least we know why the series was in post-production for nearly a year. The convenience store scene was nuts, and the effect with the Woodsman appearing to claim BOB's essence like some scary oompa loompa's was freaky as fuck. Does that mean Bad Coop is no longer with BOB? Is it still Bad Coop cause its his doppleganger?

On a side note, within the A-bomb, was the alien that spewed out the BOB bubble the same thing that killed the two kids watching the box in the first episode? And I guess the reason BOB was so intent on corrupting/possessing Laura Palmer was because she was pure/created by the Giant... which I assume is the White Lodge

Bad Coop should still be bad without BOB. In Lynch on Lynch, he clarified that the doppleganger was occupied by BOB but not possessed by him. An evil entity found a willing host who would be down for whatever awful shit it wanted to do.

The general consensus seems to be that that BOB bubble-spewer was the glass box creature and also the mother referred to by the eyeless woman in the "Mauve Room" in episode three.

I don't know what to think about that Laura bubble. If she was spewed out of the Giant's face, is she not really Sarah and Leland's daughter? Is she even human?

So right when this started the other night, damn kids dragged me out of the room to wrestle on the bed (the only room without a TV). I was in the room long enough to see Evil Cooper and Ray driving down the road and when I came back in there was suddenly nothing but mushroom clouds for five minutes. I think that's the best way to go about my initial viewing of each episode from here on out; catch the first twenty seconds, leave the room and then start watching again twenty minutes later.

How nice was it for Abraham Lincoln (apparently afflicted with colloidal silvers poisoning) to show up in 1945 New Mexico and literally squish the back of people's heads in pretty much the same manner the levitating possessed priest in City of The Living Dead did?  GOTTA LIGHT?

The sequences with the giant and mother gave off a Carnival of Souls vibe. I also found it unbearably tense when after entering the castle through the electrical outlet-like giant slit the camera focused on mother for what felt like a good three minutes as I was waiting for something really freaky to happen.

  • 2 weeks later...

Taking a quick rewatch of the first two seasons right now because, with everything else I'm into concluded, I'm all-in on this.

Of great, immediate note: I'd forgotten the dramatic shift towards the broadly absurd and supernatural almost as soon as the second season kicked off. The huge tonal shift between one and two somehow makes three somehow easier to accept as part of the family, and I'd been all-in on three from minute one.

But I'd in my mind had much more absurd and supernatural stuff taking place in season one. Leaving aside Coop's dreams and the Log Lady, that's mostly not the case.

This episode probably had the most plot development out of all the previous 9 so far. It looks like everyone involved is on a collision course for the coordinates of the Black Lodge, and they're all finally getting the information that there are two Coopers (although the FBI is seemingly one step behind the Twin Peaks Sheriff Department on that one). I think this season is less about another murder happening in the vein of Laura Palmer, and more about finding Agent Cooper and bringing him back into our reality.

But, for everyone plot advancement we had tonight, you also had stuff like Sky Ferreira having a nasty rash and a 3 minute long scene of Diane sharing a cigarette with Cole.

Bill Hastings' search for the zone blog is real:

I feel like understanding this show is sort of like understanding an Ultimate Warrior promo, which I feel like in a weird way I do.  So here's what I've kind of gleaned, spoilers for safety:

- Bill Hastings and his mistress, Ruth the Librarian, somehow tapped into an alternate dimension where Major Briggs was in a suspended state, White Lodge maybe?  Well he had the coordinates and gave them to Ruth and Bill.

- Evil Cooper or his cohorts got to them somehow, and killed Ruth.  The coordinates Ray has that Cooper wants...that's what Ruth had and got from Major Briggs.

- So Major Briggs...his head floated away...where we saw it in the second episode floating in space where it said Blue Rose.

It's all coming together!

So Briggs didn't age while he was in the Lodge, but everyone else has: Cooper, Laura, Leland, The Giant, MIKE.

I have no doubt Cooper will come back to his senses, but what a drag that he's lost 25 years of his life sitting in a chair in another dimension. It would've been a nice consolation prize to not have aged, although of course I understand why that wasn't doable. I hope they go overboard with a happy ending to make up for it. Maybe Cooper hooks up with Audrey, as he should have 25 years ago, and moves to Twin Peaks to take over as sheriff for a retiring Frank Truman. That doesn't sound like Lynch, though.

I loved the callback to Major Briggs' vision from season 2. That was one of my favorite scenes in the original series.

I guess the Waiting Room is separate to any Lodge hence aging.

This episode made me wish Michael Ontkean had come back to play Harry Truman. As much as I love Robert Forster, his investigation almost lacks weight due to the lack of emotional reasons for wanting to investigate.

Audrey Horne's kids really are a mess huh (at least I think the dark haired girl who the talking to the one of the grim rash was her daughter)

Agreement with Ontkean>Forster.  No disrespect to Forster, but I just keep thinking how all these scenes would be better if it was Harry Truman instead of this brother we never knew or heard about before until now.

How do we know those are Audrey's kids?  I think the only confirmed new Horne is Richard Horne.

I'm sure I saw a female Horne listed in the credits last night and just assumed it was the dark haired girl in the bar

If you're referring to the very last scene in the Roadhouse bar, Ella is played by Sky Ferreira and Chloe is played by Karolina Wydra. I don't think either of those characters have last names. So far, I'm pretty sure the only Horne that's been introduced that's a new character is Richard Horne. If a potential daughter of Audrey had appeared, r/TwinPeaks would have been blowing up at the prospect the minute the episode ended.

The female Horne was probably Benjamin Horne's wife from when Johnny was running around and ran into the wall, possibly killing himself.  So it was probably Sylvia Horne.

EDIT:

Also, no idea that Johnny is dead, but I mean...he freaking looked dead when we saw him.

But Cooper was actually trapped in the Black Lodge according to Sarah Palmer and Annie.

There is something lost by it not being Harry, but at least Forster is a better actor. I'm sure Frank is at least aware of what Cooper meant to his brother and that's part of his motivation.

I imagine Harry will die before the season's over. I hope that leads to a funeral that unites the town like Laura's. What a bummer if Cooper makes it back to Twin Peaks only to see his friend buried.

I got to be honest, I'm not sure Forster is a "better" actor.  He might be more accomplished, but I would take Ontkean as Harry every single day of the week over Robert Forster.

I think what I liked about Ontkean as Harry is that despite him I think already being in his 40s when his cast, the character had a sort of youthful, small town naïveté that was very charming.  While Twin Peaks had its skeletons and darker side, it also had those pure-hearted earnest folk which is why Dale was so taken with it in the first place, and he found it in people like Harry, Hawk, Doc Heyward, etc.  I always found those to be among the more genuine sides of the show.

Remember when Ontkean tried to emote after Josie died? Boy, that was rough. I'd also much prefer Harry over Frank, but I'm not going to pretend Ontkean was a good actor. He played a simple-minded small town sheriff well. When pushed beyond his limitations, it was embarrassing.

Granted, I've never seen Forster have to lose his shit in anything. He's always very low key.

Bit of a nothing episode outside of Coopers sex face. I was dying for him to do his Mr Jackpots HEEELLLOOOOO at the end of it

The guy who plays Richard Horne totally reminds of Jack Palance filtered through Frank Booth

Also, poor Johnny :(

Yeah, this ep felt like a bunch of wheel spinning.

I was really hoping the midway point of the season would be the end of Cooper as Dougie. I'm worried he's not going to come back to his senses until the end.

This reminds me of all those videos the cast made about how Twin Peaks isn't Twin Peaks without Lynch back when he was going to drop out. Is it still Twin Peaks without Dale Cooper? Lynch once said he felt Cooper wasn't 100% Cooper when other people were directing during most of the second season. What percentage is Lynch giving us now? Maybe less than 5%?

The Dougie stuff has got to end in the next episode when the casino brothers try to take him out, surely? I do love it but it has been straddling this fine line between me enjoying it and my patience running thin.

I hope you're right. I thought the attack from Ike was going to do it. Seemed like it almost did.

He's definitely going back to normal before the end. There's footage in one of the teasers of him driving, something that seems beyond him as Dougie. At least Lynch isn't so cruel that he'd end the show without Cooper at 100%.

This is my favourite show on tv and Gordon Cole is a national treasure. I've learned to love Chauncey Gardner Dougie too. I'm no longer worried where we're going and just enjoying the ride. We could've had 18 hours of stuff like the scene in the diner and it would've been great, I'm sure. But I'm so thankful for David Lynch being David Lynch and only teasing us with that.

I'm convinced they're doing a fourth season based off on how little we've actually spent in Twin Peaks. If Lynch wants to do it, Showtime would be crazy to pass on it.
