Twin Peaks

It's happening again.... tonight!

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm super psyched for this. I've been waiting a year to see the return, and it's finally here. Basically no plot details have been revealed, and minimal scene shots have been revealed.

Fantastic.

My wife never finished the series and remembered almost nothing and apart from filling her in on Bob and what happened to Cooper this was perfectly engaging for her. Someone could actually jump into this totally new and it would not be any weirder that way than any other Lynch story.

I mean, that's in part due to how much of the original was filler, side story, and red herring, and how little of the trivia actually matters to the big notes of the plot. But still I was surprised at how self-contained it already feels.

Actually I thought the "Cooper floating int he glass box" scene was uncharacteristically forgiving. Normally wouldn't Lynch just leave that whole opening scenario dangling as a footnote, never revisit it again, and let people just guess for themselves if it was another portal to the Black Lodge with no connection to the story other than that?

Look, all I really know after that is... this is probably going to be Lynch's magnum opus. It's got hints of everything he's ever done, and supposedly it's going to connect Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive with Twin Peaks, somehow.

Don't forget about Eraserhead! I got some of those vibes during certain parts of the 2 hour premier, actually. Definitely the Giant scene, and the Arm's doppleganger looks like the Eraserhead baby on acid.

It's been like two hours and that premiere still has me pumped up. Jesus. I really want to watch Parts 3 & 4, but I think I might wait until next week like most people.

I am so incredibly pissed that we had to dump Showtime

I hear ya.  As much as I really want to finally be transferred to a post closer to my crib, sponging off of my 'rent's premium cable during the week while they receive free labor and unlimited chores out of me is a symbiotic relationship right now.

I am sorta hoping that TSA won't make a decision about their Arlington, VA InfoSec positions until after the upcoming season of Game of Thrones.

There was no way this could've possibly lived up to my expectations after all this time, but I liked it well enough. It was very FWWM. I'm hoping future episodes strike more of a balance between that and the tone of the original series.

I didn't know about Michael J. Anderson's insane accusations (incestuous rape, murdering Jack Nance) against Lynch until shortly after the premiere. You make unreasonable salary demands and lash out when they're not met, you get replaced by a tree topped with a ball of flesh.

Yeah same, I was wondering why he wasn't in so had to look him up. He was a glaring omission for sure.

It all felt very Lost Highway to me, especially the sound design, and like Lynch was setting up the chess board. Needless to say it was the Red Room stuff I most engaged with but that portal murder was pretty gruesome. The sense of dread of knowing something would happen and waiting for something to happen took me right back to the dumpster bin scene in Mullholland Drive.

I wonder what Doppleganger Cooper was talking to Phillip Jefferies about and who the guy on the phone was who wanted to be joined with BOB. Just made me sadder that David Bowie couldn't be in it.

I think it's pretty obvious from what's going on at these different locations that all roads will coalesce in Twin Peaks.

Didn't watch episodes 3 and 4 as I wanted to let my thoughts percolate, people seem too quick to consume and offer a knee-jerk 'hot take' reaction these days and Lynch's stuff just doesn't work like that. The original series was David Lynch conforming to TV. The new one is TV conforming to Lynch, enjoy the nightmares.

Yeah, it's a shame Bowie couldn't be in it. Although they could always use old footage.

I'm glad they managed to get Catherine Coulson in there. She died at the end of their first month of shooting. Even if what we've seen is the extent of her role, it wouldn't have been the same without her, and she did get the ball rolling for the renewed search for Coop.

I love this:

I officially have no idea what's going on after watching Parts 3 & 4. It's wonderfully weird and amazing. I can't connect the dots to much of anything, every new episode shatters my previous theories I had.

Kinda bummed that next week's episode is only one part. 2 hours barely feels like enough, god knows what an hour is going to do to my brain.

I loved the way that whole scene in the box floating in space was edited. Albert and Cole were definitely talking about Diane at the end right?

It never crossed my mind that they were talking about Diane.

I was figuring Annie, the Log Lady, or Audrey Horne.

Diane is a great call.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's Sarah Palmer. For one, she was one of the few people in Twin Peaks who could see BOB/Black Lodge spirits, and two she's an alcoholic. She would be on the FBI's radar, or at least Cole and Rosenfield's, because they know first hand all of that information from their time spent in Twin Peaks 25 years ago.

Why would the FBI enlist Cooper's secretary from the 90s for a case like this? Might as well go get his personal doctor too, while we're at it. I think the Diane theory is mainly people wanting to put a face to the name. Many want it to be Laura Dern - I rather her play an aged Annie, myself.

Why wouldn't Albert know where Sarah Palmer lives? She's been in the same house for the past 25 years. Or is that the joke? She doesn't live, she drinks.

It would seem odd to me for Albert, who was always shown to be a skeptic, to have Sarah be the first person he'd think of when Cole suggested they have someone check Cooper out. Albert saying "blue rose" doesn't necessarily mean he's flipped from Scully to Mulder over the years. It's just that something strange is going down that he can't explain. I don't know what Gordon believes, but I don't think Albert would be like "Yeah, let's bring in a psychic!"

I think people had Diane in mind because she was regularly transcribing Cooper's thoughts when they worked together, so she'd probably know him better than most.

I really hope Annie doesn't return.

I'm just going to give up trying to understand what's going on and just enjoy the ride. I'll probably go back and bingewatch everything when the series is done.

There's only two things I know for sure: Evil Coop isn't just any Black Lodge spirit - it's BOB inside of there. And the kid at the end of tonight's episode is a member of the Horne family, as noted in the credits. More specifically, digging around on r/TwinPeaks, he's credited as Richard Horne. Which is weird, considering the Giant in the first episode mentioned "Richard & Linda" to Coop. Hmmm....

I still get the feeling Good Coop is in 2003. They made it painfully obvious to show Apple products in the FBI/Air Force scenes, and then earlier in the episode (the Dougie timeframe scenes), a Blackberry and Windows XP was shown.

I'm also going to try to not think too hard about it and dig it for what it is.  Once everything shakes out it'll probably be due a rewatch to pick up on the little things.  So far my theory is that Evil Coop was the Bob-possessed vessel we saw at the end of the original series while Real Coop remained in the lodge, perhaps stripped of his memories or some such thing.  When BobCoop left the lodge, he knew that he had only a set amount of time (25 years?) that his vessel could last in the real world before he would have to return.  Somehow he made a duplicate of himself (Dougie) that would be sent back to the lodge instead as a substitute.

Separate timelines occurred to me, but Dougie's transformation in the lodge made me think otherwise.  It's not a bad idea though, maybe Dougie morphed into the Evil Coop that's alive in the present timeline?

I will say the Dougie shit is stuff that would normally annoy me but it's just so retarded I can't help but like it.  That his son is called Sonny Jim made me laugh a lot harder than it should have.

It should also be noted that Sonny Jim was blinking backwards in the car. I don't know what that means for anything in this show, but as we know, speaking and moving backwards like that is a signature of the Red Room.

The comedy here is working for me more than some of the goofier scenes in the original series. Dougie is way funnier than the Andy/Lucie/Little Nicky or Nadine storylines. Kyle Maclachlin is killing it in all three of his performances.

Dr. Jacoby being the Alex Jones of Twin Peaks peddling "golden" shit digging shovels was an amazing development to that plot line. Of course Nadine and Jerry Horne would be watching that. The Amanda Seyfried car scene was extremely well shot.

Just when I thought I was figuring out 75% of the main storyline, they added the Argentina twist to it.

I'm loving all of this so far.

It would be a great payoff if we see a golden shovel in Nadine's house at some point.

Ed and Nadine probably divorced right?  But I may have missed it, it didn't look like Norma had a wedding ring.  So I don't think it worked out for her and Ed.  I feel really bad for Shelley.  First what she had to endure being abused by that monster Leo.  Now she's the long suffering mother with her own daughter, who is basically now Laura Palmer's exact mirror from Fire Walk With Me.

I'm really not trying to make sense out of anything.  I feel even if you try, you truly can't.

Here is my one complaint.  If Dale Cooper spends the whole show in this addled state, I will be disappointed.  Unfortunately, it's moving at a snail's pace.  Credit to Kyle MacLachlan, and I know this show isn't really taking place in the real world.  But everyone just going along with Cooper as Dougie is getting tiresome.  It was sort of fun in the casino episode, but now the fact that no one realizes something is wrong with this guy is ridiculous.  This is starting to become like Weekend at Bernie's Here.

I also noticed that at the end the douchebag smoking guy had a pack of Morley brand cigarettes.  Those are also the fictional brand The Smoking Man preferred in The X Files.  Have there been Same Universe easter eggs like that before?
