I just love how Godard regularly challenges Form. It’s tough to place him of lists because all the self imposed qualifications for what is great he manages to create outside that and still manages to feel excellent as an enjoyable piece of art. Always either ahead of what people are doing (use of jump cuts, erratic text, cuts in sound editing, treating the film as a film instead of a story to be lost in, and most recently changing concepts of visual understandings on how to interpret 3-D) and then a decade or two later we see what he did but done in a more fluidly new-uniform modern way. 

Im pumped to watch more Bresson. I try to heavily space out filmmakers when I can. I made the mistake of going through filmographies when I was a young hungry movie nerd. I wish I left more on the table.

I'm compelled to share one. This is a neat thread that I completely slept on. I'd love to see the full list, but from searching thru the pages I was into most of what made the final cut.  

Thanks, I was hoping you'd share some thoughts on Godard and that film. I'm curious of the Godard-speak on 'how to interpret 3-D'? This is reminding me that I'd meant to check out that doc he made a few years back called 'The Image Book'. I also liked seeing you reference 'the Weekend'. That's my quintessential Godard flip-flop film. I really liked it the first time around. It was one of the first Nouvelle Vague films I saw'r. I didn't honestly absorb much, but I really loved the style and the ideas. Later I rewatched it and didn't like it - except for the opening, I've always loved the opening. The last time I saw it, a couple years ago, it just completely worked for me. And now exists in my upper echelon Jean-Luc alongside Breathless, Vivre La Vie, Alphaville, Band of Outsiders and Pierrot le Fou. I saw Contempt for the first time a few years ago at a TIFF Lightbox screening, and tho it looked wonderful and I liked a lot about it (soundtrack included), I just wasn't feeling it. That said, I'm ready for an encore. There are very few filmmakers that I feel the need to rewatch when first watch wasn't a success, but Godard is definitely one of them. When they work they're so creatively inspiring.

I'm 100% with you on spacing things out. I need lots of time to sit with most anything that I love now. I have pals that are rabid viewers/film buffs who watch so much so often. I'm amazed how some of these ppl can retain as much as they do. Some can't like me. I need to sit with things for days, and in the case of these classics from bygone eras - do some follow up readings.

Reviewing my ballot two or three would move from the HM list to my top 100 (not the Franco film lol), a few from the 100 would move up or down significantly, and maybe a dozen would be replaced with different films that I forgot about or have seen since. But it would still be mostly the same. Now if we could submit a top 200 then I could feel good about it.

Yeah, that's about how I'd view it. My thought was, 1) put together individual decades lists; 2) pull the top 20 of each and some extra as needed since the 1920s and 30s would end up underrepresented in terms of top-tier quality; 3) cobble it together and rank the stuff you actually care about enough. That ends up at 200-ish in total, with whatever number you want ranked.

Honestly, I read this when you posted it but just checked my phone when I was taking my son on a stroller walk. Completely forgot the notification and the other day was think on things when I couldn’t sleep and sat up remembering this! My bad!

I typed this up in the 2010’s list thread but retyped some things to fit a little better conversationally.

With how 3D is shot, it’s actually done with 2 cameras to create that effect. How specifically, I can’t fully describe. I’m guessing a foreground and background? Regardless, it requires a lot of very specific spacing of the camera to pull off. Well, there is a scene where two characters are talking to each other. Pretty normal, but one character is pulled away to talk with someone else. One camera follows the one character and the other stays. Both images are now over each other, instead of the same shot. Your brain having never seeing this before is comprehending this kaleidoscope image. Eventually you can literally see both images at the same time. Literally having full comprehension of both, simultaneously. All in a matter of seconds. You are experiencing something that is so outside of common experience, but you’re able to physically do it. You close one eye and it’s just the one character. Close the other and it is the other. Even in his 80’s Godard is a daring lunatic that is changing how we think of film and its capabilities. 

I saw it twice in theaters. The first time I started to tear up. So much joy for how much I love cinema. I remember going to a 3D movie in the past, I think one of the Resident Evils but I’m not sure, but I recall a scene that was beautiful. It was simply a character walking down a wide hallway with several pillars in the shot. I felt that 3D was used so regularly for gimmick jump moments and attributing to the excitement of action, that I forget to appreciate the idea of using the technology to create a new layer to the mise-en-scene. How beautiful a composition can be in a stationary shot with an extra dimension added to it. Godard managed to create a parallel experience and added such an epiphany to me that I feel I am failing to express thoroughly. His films are often filled with odd editing that can be stark at the moment but be used decades later in a more accessible form of storytelling. His use of jump cuts, visual text structure, sound cuts in the 60’s are all used excellently in modern storytelling. I can only scratch the surface of imagining how future directors will use this brief moment of split camera 3D to enhance or add to their stories.

I enjoyed Image Book, but when I saw it I sadly had a few drinks beforehand. Being more one of his film essay type movies, I should watch it again with a clearer mind. I do love these types of films that he makes. Film Socialism was really special.
