So, How's It Going?

Snooty the Manatee was killed in an accident at his home in the South Florida Museum yesterday. He was the oldest manatee ever, having just turned 69 a few days earlier. He was the highlight of my visits to Florida and I am just devastated right now. If you look at my longtime avatar that's him. RIP Snooty.

An update: I really am a paranoid child.  The TIGTA e-mail was about my lost ID card; since it had been several months I had forgotten they'd eventually have to investigate it, and didn't know that the alert  manifested as a complaint filing. I am still getting the cold shoulder from my teammates and not going to get picked up for a longer detail, but at least I know now that nobody was out to fuck me over.  I feel really, really stupid for getting so worked up now.

I went to go to bed and a wolf spider was chilling on the door frame of my bedroom. I know they are the type of spider that is good to have around so its better to try to catch/release, but he was too fast and I knew I couldn't sleep in my room if I knew he was in there too. So he had to die, which I feel somewhat bad about since I try not to kill useful creatures. Course now I am still paranoid. I don't like bugs or spiders, especially massive ones. First one I've ever seen and hopefully the last.

I made the decision a couple of years ago to not kill spiders if I find them in my apartment, after I read about how many nasty things they can eat in a year. Very good creatures to have around.

But the other morning, I had to break my promise. There was a little one on the wall in the bathroom, right next to the toilet. I had to go really bad, and I knew I wouldn't be comfortable knowing it was there. So sadly, it got squished.

That's the issue with wolf spiders, they don't make webs so either they are going to creep around your home and startle you since they are quite big, or you have to catch them which is hard since they are fast. I let spiders live if they set up a web somewhere in a corner, which my mom hates because she thinks it is weird but I'd rather they catch flies and shit than be dead.

Fortunately, the bulk of "my" spiders are quite reasonably sized. I did have to catch and release one largish one in the tub one day. Used the card and glass method I had always heard of, and it worked a treat. Put that big fella outside the front door, and he went on his merry way. (And I was able to take my shower.)

I'm with you. Spiders on ceilings/walls well above head height I let be. If they creep too far downward, though, then it'll be a quick squishing.

I am fortunate to live in town, just twenty miles from here at my Sister-in-law's place there are tarantulas, LARGE tarantulas. I fully realize that they perform a useful function, so do IRS auditors and I don't want them around me, either.  Of course, going in the other direction to Naschetti, (don't bother looking on the map, it likely ain't there), there are way more black widows than humans. My brother-in-law has been bitten by one, I saw one on the front door screen when out visiting. Yeah, got no use for black widows either.

If I were to see a black widow -- and could avoid running in the other direction -- it would definitely be the recipient of the thickest shoe or book that I could grab.

Dangerous poisonous spiders are the exception to my rule.

This is why I'm happy to live in N.Y. Metro area. Almost no dangerous animals (there is only one poisonous snake native to the region, and it's bite is very rarely lethal). There are bears though, but all you have to do is throw them a picnic basket and they will leave you alone (I learned that from watching cartoons).

NY is infested with the most dangerous animal! (Hint: it walks on two legs) ;-) Venomous snake in the NY Metro? Okay, I'm guessing copperhead? Bears? Oh, we have bears, though oddly enough out here in the boonies, you never see them. On the other hand in ABQ or Rio Rancho, they wander down from the Sandias all the damn time.

Ah, for fuck's sake... My brother-in-law was admitted to the emergency room (again), he took way early retirement some months back and has been drinking like a fish ever since. Somehow he found out that if he could claim disability from alcoholism he'd get a monthly check, so he set out with a vengeance to prove he was no longer employable. Of course, his older sisters who live a few doors away feel sorry for him and give him money for booze which just makes things worse. He won't come into town with my sister-in-law if she's planning on coming here because "I'll lecture him" Of course, I'll do nothing of the kind, I've already told him if he wants to quit drinking I will walk through hell in a gasoline suit to help him do so; if he wants to continue drinking, I'll probably go to his funeral unless there's something good on TV that day. They wanted to keep him overnight and then send him to ABQ as he's showing signs of acute pancreatitis, but he told them he wanted to go home so they had to cut him loose. He's supposed to report to a hospital in ABQ tomorrow, but I'm not holding out much hope that that's going to happen. Yeah, I know I'm powerless over my own drinking, let alone anyone else's but as the guy who helped me get sober was fond of saying, "you have to accept it, but nobody said that you have to like it." In the 29 years that I've been sober I've gotten really fucking tired of burying people because of this disease. Three years ago was my friend Rudy, at 34... Yeah, you read that right, 34. Once your liver and kidneys go, that's pretty much all she wrote. You think you're going to get a new liver when you're drinking all the way to the hospital? Think again.

My black widow story:

At our apartment in Colorado many years ago, I see my cat playing with a spider.  I think nothing of it and, for some reason, grab a paper cup to scoop it up instead of smashing it.  I go flush it down the toilet and when it hits the bowl, it lands upside down.  And I see that ORANGE FREAKING HOURGLASS on the belly.  For whatever reason, this freaks me out but I don't think to do anything about the cat.  He seems fine, no big deal.  Get up the next day and he's foaming at the mouth something awful.  Somehow find a vet in our small town that'll drive into his office on a Sunday.  He looks at him for like 30 seconds, gives him a shot, and maybe 10 minutes later, cat is all good again.  I am incredibly thankful he survived getting bitten as I could not live with myself if he died because I didn't get him care soon enough because of my own negligence.

My thoughts go out to everyone here who has been through some shit lately.

@Ace, what did you wind up finding out?

Still not a whole fucking lot. My primary care physician basically took guesses based on what meds they sent me home with. Turns out his office hates my hospital and rehab facility and recommends I go elsewhere if I can. My insurance folks (who I'll only have for the next month, as I found that my boss sold the company in my absence) have been awesome, though. They've managed to set me up pretty well with follow-up doctor visits. Seeing a pulmonary specialist on Friday, a urologist on Monday. They also have me receiving 3 home visits from a Nurse (so far used one) and one housecall from the insurance company.

Blood ox is good. BP is getting more stable but it's taking lots of meds to maintain. I notice I've got some after effects of a bit of head fuzziness (including having to speak slower) and weakness in one leg, though,

BP medicine is a total guessing game, you may wind up going through several combos until they hit on one that works with no unwelcome side effects. One that they gave me a couple of years back had the amusing side-effect when coupled with another drug that I have to take of shutting down my kidneys. You would think that the doc would check something that potentially dangerous, but noooo... Anyway, best of luck, sounds like you have some pretty great coverage, (home visits? I had no idea they still did such things).

Lucky cat! I'm actually surprised that the bite could get through the fur. Cats may be smarter than dogs, but they ain't all that bright, in Seattle I had to rescue one of ours who was stalking after a raccoon. That would not have ended well at all. The raccoon was walking along the fence and some two feet behind it fur puffed out was Spike in full stalking mode. The damn raccoon was bigger than he was, I don't know what he thought he was going to accomplish.

My soon-to-be-former-boss set up our med insurance right before he had to get a bypass. So yeah, I've been spoiled. I didn't know there was such a thing as home visits either.

Looks like my sleep meds have finally stopped working. Been taking 300mgs of trazodone to help me sleep since the fall of 2007. My doctor has been warning me that one day I would build up a tolerance to it.

But the good news is my youngest son is  one of the sweetest and nicest people on the planet. He has Aspergers so has issues dealing with various things. But his grandparents got him a job this summer. Now I figured he would use his paycheck to get more comics and legos. Nope each week when he gets paid he donates half his check to a local homeless shelter. Then spends the rest on comics and legos.

I learned on Friday that my mother has liver cancer. Completely out of nowhere. I won't know how bad it is until she sees a specialist, hopefully early this week.

Well, she saw the specialist this morning, and after a couple of weeks of assuming the best news we'd get would be something not completely terrible, it turns out the specialist doesn't even think she has cancer! I'll find out more when I talk to her this evening.

  • 2 weeks later...

We lost my father-in-law on the 30th, one day before my wife's birthday.   Needless to say, things have been.. not fun lately.  So much estate stuff to deal with, but at least the will was taken care of well ahead of time and things are about as straightforward as they can get in this situation.
