IN MEMORIAM 2017

I grew up with the Home Alone films and I know that's what Heard's most famously connected with, but he's such a goddam powerhouse in stuff like Cutter's Way and The Sopranos. He had more range than the yuppie executive roles he was often cast in.

I was watching 'Road House' on cable yesterday and thought "That auto-parts store owner looks super familiar", IMDBed it and found out it was Red West, then found out he'd passed away around the same time as Landau and Romero (July 17, 2017).  He was most well-known for being a friend/part of Elvis' entourage, which is unforunate because he had an amazing turn in the indie flick 'Goodbye Solo' as a suicidal alcoholic.

Robert Hardy - best known for being on All Creatures Great and Small, the Harry Potter movies and for playing Churchill like a 1000 times - died at the age of 91

Joseph Bologna passed away over the weekend at the age of 82.

1982 Oscar noms for Best Supporting Actor were a Murderer's Row.  I sorta hoped that Bologna would've gotten a nod for My Favorite Year, but Charles Durning, John Lithgow, and Robert Preston were forces of nature that year.

A Sonny Landham night would be a great way to immerse yourself in the VCR-level action cinema of the 80s/90s.

How amazing does just this list of titles sound even leaving aside the big titles (Action Jackson, 48 Hours, Predator, , The Warriors, Best of the Best 2...YES BEST OF THE NEST 2 is a "bit title" goddammit!):

Three Days to a Kill

Maximum Force

Lock Up

Fatal Choice

Carnival of Wolves

Night Realm

Savage Land

Firewalker

Fleshburn...HOW DO YOU NOT WANT TO SEE A MOVIE CALLED FLESHBURN???????

Or you could do a survey of 70s porn with weirdly ambiguous titles:

The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann (Porn or confessional novel?)

The Defiance of Good (Porn or philosophical lecture series?)

The Switch or How to Alter Your Ego (Porn or self help book sold by Oprah to white ladies?)

Abigail Leslie is Back in Town (Porn or 1988 teen dramedy starring Winona Ryder?)

I went to school with his son. And My Favorite Year is fantastic... one of my favorite movies.

Cause I am the grim reaper around here (of course)...

Dick Gregory died.

Fuck.

RIP

To me, Dick Gregory was able to put himself up their in terms of being a true African-American historian and scholar like a John Henrik Clarke or Dr. Yosef ben Jochannan (bka Dr. Ben) all while being an entertainer at the same time for several decades. That's an astonishing feat considering now most entertainers (including athletes) are idiotically critiqued by people who have no earthly clue about the complexities of social issues especially those dealing with race. Now that those men above aren't with us anymore (I would be remiss in leaving out Dr. Frances Cress Welsing as the most respected black female scholar),  it makes their work even more valuable to black people in perhaps the most critical time for African-Americans.

Even though Chappelle is known for his great social commentary, I don't know if he can hop into the same lane that Gregory did and give the same contextual understanding/meaning that Gregory was able to give. I'm not even talking just wanting to make loads of money and not alienate a crossover fanbase. I'm talking about not giving a flying fuck about the ramifications that may come with your viewpoints and delivering knowledge to folks that need it the most on a variety of platforms. I mean J. Edgar Hoover tried to have Dick Gregory killed by the mafia decades ago (it would be 50 years ago next year). Even in old age, he was as visible and speaking with the same intensity as he was in the 1960s. I dunno if any one person is that dedicated in refusing to be deterred for their cause in the entertainment industry. That's the truest form of commitment to elevating black people, especially now when black people with a platform are willing to throw their own people under the bus for any type of monetary gain.

Rest in power, Mr. Gregory.

I came to say something about Mr. Gregory, but Elsalvajeloco has already made a very eloquent statement.

He spoke at my commencement when I graduated from Hampton U in 1990.  He hugged me after I received my diploma and just told me to go and live a happy life and be good to other human beings.  Nothing stellar about going out to rule world or dragging society through a sea change on my own.

He just wanted me to live a life of personal fulfillment with my own satisfaction being the litmus of success or failure and he wanted me to treat other people with respect.  Live as an example and maybe people will follow the example.

Then he signed my commencement program.  I had it framed about a year ago, but now I need to find a good spot to display it at my house.

Comedian and character actor Jay Thomas passed away at age 69.  His best-known acting role is probably Eddie LeBec, Carla's hockey player husband on Cheers.  But he's probably better known for being on Letterman every year around Christmas to tell this story:
