That certainly makes sense, but in the process they punished 205 Live just because Enzo was an annoying piece of shit.

Agreed.  But he was also more over than everyone else on the 205 roster put together.  Of course, there are tons of reasons for that, but, Enzo being foisted upon 205 was mutually beneficial/punitive.

If you had this tournament be to face Enzo at Mania, and guys like Roddy and Hideo saying they were going to straight up kill Enzo at Mania...

I mean Enzo wasn't the problem. They should've just let the other guys work matches their way.

Alsi, without Enzo I think Vince would've cancelled 205 months ago.

Imagining Roddy vs Cedric at Mania gave me flashbacks to their ROH feud between backbreaker specialists. I was shocked in my search to find they'd already worked in NXT. Zero recollection.

Also, guys normally don't grab the vacant belt off of the ringside podium thing. Hopefully Gulak didn't get a talking to for breaking one of the big man's silly rules.

That Gulak/Nese match was refreshing - when's the last time on WWE tv, in a non-jobber squash match, that someone got destroyed like that?

Gulak managed to change while Nese came out still pointing to his abs and he paid for it.  So simple, so good.

That's all well and good, but if that's the case then why was Enzo put on there to begin with?  Something doesn't seem right about that.

At the time, he was moving merch and the needle. I get it. 205 needed the eyes, and he provided them, for however short a time.

Jesus Christ at Gulak.

I'm not kidding when I say that guy has almost everything to go to the top of the WWE. Can do comedy, can be serious, Heck of a promo, can get poorly conceived gimmicks over, and can work both story matches and match matches  with relative ease.

He's so good.

You just described Rusev who creative has had nothing for in years.

I like Gulak as much as the next guy, but as a comedy act, I found him mundane. He has never made me laugh and while I celebrate his earnestness and execution of the gimmick, I would not put him on the same level as Rusev in terms of versatility. Rusev is intimidating and hilarious and can be given whatever shit gimmick Vince can think for him and when he pulls it off to gain the heat that Vince did not want for him, Vince refuses to push him and finds more elaborate ways to not make him more over than everyone else. It is a struggle. Gulak, however, can a more intimidating with his moveset than Rusev. The Dragon Sleeper is one of the most vicious looking submissions since the Gogoplata. It also helps that Gulak knows what to say to make him sound like a psycho. Like, the rest of the match was good, but the moment Gulak shouted, "Let's finish what we started, Tony." No lie, this was my genuine reaction in gif form.

It came out of left field from an other wise intense match up. The story of the match was that one of these guys had to shed the comedy persona to grow into something bigger. Tony came in as the abs guy, but was showing off why he is the Premier Athlete of the WWE. Drew, however, completely shed his comedy act and went beyond the Philadephia Brawler Gulak that I saw in the CW Classic. He turned into a completely different character and basically reinvented himself in one match. And that takes talent.

The first match between Tozawa and Andrews was disappointing and underwhelming. I like both of these guys, but what should have been this captivating action fest tyurned into this needlessly meticulous grapple fest while was good, but was not what they needed to kick off 205 Live. By far the weakest match of the tournament.

It appears that Buddy Murphy is the last entrant of this tournament. Kind of underwhelmed and I hope he finds a different finisher than the Shooting Star Press. It looks nice, but that is Lince's and Mark Andrews Finisher.

205 should be a brand ala NXT.

Quarterly events. Build to stuff. Like they can have a six man at Raw specials to pop the crowd, but focus on slow burn.

Pretty sure that's where HHH is headed.

What they should do is cancel 205 Live, make NXT 2 hours and merge them and make it a proper 3rd brand.

Then you make it a demand during TV negotiations to get the show on TV. Fox would probably be delighted to air it on Fox Sports 2 or something, and I'm sure NBC could find some home for it.

Buddy Murphy looked great, Ariya Daivari is basically the cruiserweight version of enhancement talent.  Daivari hits his finisher and still loses, lol.

Speaking of enhancement talent, the Lucha House Party gets a surprise appearance and a win over "local competition".  Ok, I cracked up when Vic snuck "good lucha thing" into the broadcast a few weeks ago, let's not overuse it.

Jack/Ali was quite a good match.  I like the updated version of Gentleman Jack, a guy who will take you apart because that's his job.  Unlike Gulak, who had a heck of a promo earlier, he doesn't hold any malice about it.  He's just doing it to win a match.  He works over Ali's arm for most of the match, Ali takes unnecessary bumps (shoved off the turnbuckles to the barricade, taking the shoulder to the post by flying through the ropes to the outside, and the failed corkscrew when he couldn't grab the rope to stop himself from missing Gallagher and landed hard on the apron) but Ali perseveres and gets the win with the 0-5-4.

Christ, Ali does not intend to be able to walk in his 40's. He took a crazy shoulder post bump (basically the same one Ember Moon did on NXT last week although his looked a bit more controlled), a really insane missed dive to the floor bump, and a FUCKING NUTS fall from the second rope into the barricade.

Then he won anyway. Which is fine, because Jack kinda steps on Gulak's turf as the ground and destroy guy.

This tournament is all kinds of fun. Maybe the show should just be a never ending series of tourneys.

Month long number one contender tournaments building to PPV title match.

Another good episode. Buddy Murphy looked great. Jack Gallagher had a return to form and I wish he'd advanced but that's just my style bias speaking. A final four of Strong, TJP, Gulak, and Gallagher working body parts would be my cup of tea, but the crowd needs high flying or they'll really go to sleep.
