I'm not sure how long it'll keep me interested, because we're two episodes in and there's not a single character that I care about yet, but for the moment, I'm greatly enjoying the world they've built and all the narrative gamesmanship. _MJ_ Posted October 8, 2016 Share Posted October 8, 2016 Funny, I watched the second episode of WESTWORLD and I'm not so sure about it. Getting some LOST vibes, but not the good LOST ones. Ha. I can see them keeping the Man in Black and Anthony Hopkins' character away from each other for awhile, which must mean they have some history. They'll likely have a dramatic face to face scene at some point. Not so sure The Man in Black character is human either. I'm just interested enough to keep with it for a bit, but the slow burn to the apparent "host" rebellion(REVOLUTION?!) might to start to bore me if it is drawn out. More like bland and ridiculous. Something about it just grates on my nerves when I try to watch it. Numbers was a much better procedural built around a similar concept. My whole issue was in a show about super smark geeks with socialization issues, they couldn't get one technical thing about how pretty much anything technical worked correct. I'm a person who would rather people swing for the fence and miss than try to work the count and try to get walked to first base. Basic competence shouldn't be an aspiration, it should be the prerequisite for doing the job. It is why you can go to any city in the country and have to wait an hour and a half to go to Olive Garden, when the mom and pop Italian place around the corner never has a line. Somehow we've tricked the world into thinking that good enough is a worthy goal. P.S. In the sense of Scorpion, House, Backstrom, Elementary, and many, many other shows of that stripe, "competence porn" refers to the lead(s)'s hyper competence. Middle America seemingly LOVES any show where the protagonist is some sort of genius and is the absolute best, most amazing at something. He or she is always the smartest person in the room. They love it doubly so if he/she is also socially awkward. Triply so if the show is brimming with slick, too clever by half quip-filled dialog that nobody in real life is ever smooth enough to pull off. That makes sense, but I was talking about how CBS has 157455 shows that are essentially all the same, hour long, formulaic, dramas that aren't necessarily good, but you could watch . I didn't really notice, that all of those shows are based around an absurdly competent "leader," who can solve damn near any problem in 43 minutes of screen time. When will the opposite become cliche? If you look at the most critically acclaimed TV shows of the last 15-20 years, you could probably describe them as "flaw porn." Tony Soprano, Walter White, and basically everyone on The Wire, seem to be a change of pace, because of how many super competent characters we see everywhere else. Could there be a really well done, critically acclaimed, competency porn show at this point? Is our affection for the flawed television heroes of the last few years been a direct result of our distaste for the uber-competent characters we've been bombarded with for the majority of our television watching lives? "Her life's a mess, she has two young boys that are out of control, but she's a good cop!" I've never heard the Competence Porn term before, but whenever there's a new show where the lead's an unparalleled genius in their field but battling personal demons my wife and I always yell, "But he's a good _____!"
