If it counts:

Jaws

Silence of the Lambs

Manhunter

The Shark and Hannibal Lector are monsters, so those movies totally count.

The Creeping Flesh made me say "throw the penis in the fire" out loud just now. Don't believe there has been or ever will be another film that made me utter such a phrase.

Isn't that literally a line of dialog in ZARDOZ?

Didn't Jodie Foster say Silence "isn't a horror film" at the Oscars or something? Yeah, if so, that's utter bullshit.

Buffalo Bill and Hannibal Lector both shared parts of Ed Gein's MO who also served as part of the inspiration for Leatherface so yeah.  Silence of the Lambs is totally a fucking horror movie.

MORE REVIEWS!

005. The Hands of Orlac: Conrad Veidt plays famous pianist Paul Orlac, who loses his hands in a train accident and has his appendages replaced via surgery.  The catch?  Orlac's new hands once belonged to a freshly executed murdering sociopath!  Orlac spends the rest of the film becoming obsessed and thinking the murderer's soul has transferred into him and thinking he's going across France killing unsuspecting innocents.  Veidt can always be counted on to give a strong performance, but Alexandra Sorina does a great job as his devoted wife.  The movie has a sensual quality to it--Paul's love letters to Yvonne were pretty steamy for 1924.  I enjoyed it and if you're into silent horror films, it's a worthwhile watch.

006. Midnight Faces : a silent mystery of a young man inheriting a Florida swamp estate from an unknown uncle who recently died in China.  A so-so 'old dark house' film that started off OK, but pissed me off as they had the Black butler doing some irritating shit.  It was there, whatever.  Not downright horrible, but not worth looking up either.

007. Phantom of the Paradise: I didn't watch quite all of it, but a great campy musical flick.  Lots of fun to watch.

008. The New York Ripper: 1982 sleaze fest from Lucio Fulci. A Donald Duck imitator is going around, crank calling people and killing women in grotesque ways. What a slimy movie! Not for the easily offended.  NASTY to the core.  How did this get past censors?

I'm going to do a special post for the original The Hills Have Eyes 2. Good grief, what a fucking mess.

RANDOM HALLOWEEN JUNK!

So a few days ago I got a random envelope in the mail from my mom.  Inside is this little zombie guy with a note to put it in water.

It turns out it's like a reverse shrinky dink and after a few days:

Spoiler

IMG_0209.jpg

It is literally my favorite possession as of now, in part because of how he casually leans against things like Matthew McConaughy in DAZED AND CONFUSED, but also because it grosses out my wife so much (like Matthew McConaughy in DAZED AND CONFUSED)

This is a woman who casually watches Fulci movies while doing other things and this slimy green zombie guy sends her squealing out of the room.

HALLOWEEN!!!!!

It didn't in Britain, being one of the controversial Video Nasties. I highly doubt Germany or Sweden, who were equally censorious in the '80s, thought highly of it either.

In that huge list I would encourage everyone to take special note of the following:

Mon. 10/24 9:30 am POP Beverly Hills 90210 (1991) 90210 takes a bold stand against rape...or at least against dressing like a slut and asking for it.  Yep...it's 1991!

Thu. 10/27 10:30 am PopTV Beverly Hills 90210 season 7 Halloween episode (1996)

Mon. 10/31 9:00 am WGN Walker, Texas Ranger (1998) Did you think Walker would not have an Halloween episode with a Satanic cult who eats children?  You were WRONG!!!!

Mon. 10/31 8:00 pm GETV Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour (possibly Halloween...from Oct. 24, 1973) I'm not certain if this is Halloween themed, but it is dated 10/24/74 and why would they run that particular episode if it wasn't?  Either way ITS THE FUCKING SONNY & CHER COMEDY HOUR FROM 1973!!

MON 10/31 8:00 am MeTV The Beverly Hillbillies (1963) This episode if amazing.  The Clampetts have never heard of Halloween and think their neighbors just send their deformed children out begging because they are too ugly and the parents don't want them anymore.

That Walker, Texas Ranger episode features Erik Todd Dellums AKA Dr. Frazier on The Wire AKA Luther Mahoney on Homicide: Life on the Street.

And barring any admissions from any of you good people, I'm the only person I know of that watched The George Carlin Show every week.

This is your yearly reminder that everyone should watch TERRORVISION.  I am bringing it up because there's a great 1986 episode of Night Flight on the Roku Night Flight channel that is all about "recent" horror movies with long bits on a lot of mid 80s classics and some obscure things too.  I almost certainly watched this in literal awe and terror since I would not be able to see any of these

Nightmare on Elm Street
Nightmare on Elm Street Part II: This was weird because it had just come out (pun because it's all homosexual subtext!!!) and I guess the production company had to send them full scenes ahead of time that hadn't yet been scored or color corrected and it was just bizarre to watch it that way

House
Terrorvision which reminded me what an absolutely astoundingly great and insane movie Terrovision is.  Seriously if you've never seen this it needs to be the next thing you watch. Diane Franklin is in it.  That should be enough...but there's so much more

Nomads A ridiculous Pierce Brosnan horror movie directed by John McTiernan about Inuit spirits
The Hitcher
Critters

Then it segues into New Sounds with The Church, Violent Femmes, The Golden Palominos, Public Image Ltd.

Terrorvision is indeed great. Uncle Rico as Diane Franklin's rawker boyfriend O.D. is vintage cheese. Plus it gifted us with the classic quote "can't even get a Heiney for the road!" roughly around the same time that Frank Booth exclaimed "Heineken! Fuck that shit! Pabst's Blue Ribbon!" As for House, I watched it again a few years ago and I can honestly say it hasn't aged well at all. On the other hand, a bunch of the sight gags and puppets seem to have been reused in Evil Dead II. I shit you not. Things like that just make me consider how much better Phantasm II comes off as a movie with a legit hellish netherworld like the Hellraiser franchise while Evil Dead II is just coming at you with silly ass goddamn puppets and H.R. Puffnstuff psychedelic effects as its demon-infested netherworld. Not that I don't love Evil Dead II since I watch it half the time I catch it on cable now that it's in regular rotation. But it very much knows it's a joke compared to Hellraiser and Phantasm II. I mean Phantasm II gives you some room to breathe "(Reg, you're a balding ex-ice cream vendor!)" but it still takes things seriously enough not to mention the kills are gory enough and not total splatter bullshit nonsense like Evil Dead II. To me, Phantasm II is so awesome because it is the happy medium between Hellraiser and Evil Dead. It isn't totally depraved and centered on an afterlife of mutilation but its netherworld is very creepy and hellish just the same.

Don't even remember that. Was it sketch comedy or something?

It was a sitcom. Carlin played a NYX taxi cab driver. Lot of the scenes took place in a bar that was loosely based on one he used to frequent in real life. The owner/bartender, the waitress, his bookie, couple regular customers were the main co-starring characters.
