NFL OFF FIELD ISSUES

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

the people online criticizing the decision to suspend Ridley for a season are probably the people who'd need an obvious gamefixing scandal to help them realize that "hey, NFL players gambling on NFL games should be punished pretty harshly"

there's a bit of whataboutism going on with people comparing a gambling suspension to domestic violence suspensions

Calvin Ridley is 6'1/190, so i'm guessing he's not gonna go into pro wrestling like Alex Karras did after getting suspended for gambling.

Gotta love that the same punishment for gambling was enforced in the 1960s and the 2020s (with more games in a season in 2022 than 1963)

He'd be a heavyweight in some promotions.

Did I hear correctly that he made an 18 bet parlay?

Cause... Damn

Okay it was "only" 8, which is still a huge parlay, but not quite as insane as I thought I heard the reporter say.

I understand why he is suspended for a year but I unfortunately can also see Goddel's idea of penance is to be forced to do 10 Draft Kings commercials with Jessie Coffield during the season.   If you are going to make your bed with sports gambling you can't really be too shocked if the sheets don't get tucked in all the way

The only real defense of Ridley is that he wasn't with the team, and who knows whether or not he was ever planning on going back.  It isn't like he was on the sidelines making bets, he was at home making bets like one of us would make a bet.  With that said, the only excuse to bet on the Falcons winning anything is that you feel you're part of the team and are doing it to feel some sort of solidarity with your teammates.

Charles Robinson's story said the total bet was $1,500.

It's funny they talk about issue of Ridley potentially having inside information when all of the sportsbooks are "secretly" paying people in every organization for inside information. The house always wins.

One of Pete Rose's arguments is that he never bet on his team to lose, so he had no motivation to throw games.

Yeah, but he was in the dugout... and he clearly has a huge gambling problem. I get why Ridley got suspended,  you have to suspend anyone on a team gambling on games. I'm just saying that Ridley's character is being attacked like he was gambling on games he was a part of when he wasn't in contact with the team. I don't know why he left,  but I always assumed that he was just done with football,  so my viewpoint is skewed by that assumption.

I was agreeing with you about Ridley and his character. I think the NFL is on shaky ground here, and I already mentioned that Jordan got away with it by gambling on golf and casinos and then leaving for minor league baseball when he was in deep shit (as a comparison to Rose and his problem gambling).

I wonder what the percentage of NFL players who are betting on NFL games but through a 3rd party or even farther party like a friend or associate to make the line harder to track?   I wouldn't be surprised if it the over/under is around 15%

The hand-wringing and pearl-clutching around this topic (not just here) reminds me how much I'd love to see each and every professional sports league burn to the fucking ground.

Same. The more I hear about this the more I'm pretty sure Ridley is being made a martyr despite his actual actions. He made an 8 team parlay while not actively participating in anything involving the NFL. Suspending him for a year is kind of crazy when you take into account that we have no idea if he actual ever plans on playing again. He literally left the game in the middle of a season, which never happens. This feels like they want to get in front of any controversy regarding gambling before it actually happens. This is a huge reaction to something that didn't really matter at all.

When Deflategate broke, the Ray Rice thing hadn't completely blown up to its maximum effect yet, and they were looking at 4-game and 2-game suspensions, respectively.  My "snipe at the NFL" take was that Brady would have gotten a smaller suspension if he'd deflated the footballs by punching them in an elevator till they were flatter.  Now, "______ but in an elevator" is how I think of getting away with things in the NFL, like people who have sex through a hole in a sheet.

I figure Deshaun gets a 6 game suspension.  How he's still like can't wait to pick out what team I'm going to get traded to instead of being like, I'm ready to redeem myself, beg for forgiveness etc. really sucks.  I mean, throw the city a bone even if we're gonna trade you anyway.

Where does everyone think he ends up?  The cynic in me says he's still on the Texans roster when the season starts.
