Games of Thrones Unsullied thread

I can't even cover all the nonsense, but one stretch was absolutely ridiculous and sums up the problems with the rest of the battle.  The part where the undead are overrunning everyone and the trench needs lighting.  There were shots of Grey Worm looking around at the carnage and summoning his courage and instead of him running out with a torch to light the Olympic flame as wights take swings at him, Melisandre runs out there and chants for 2 minutes to light it.  Don't get me wrong, Beric's eventual death was a good moment, but he was still out there in front of the gates at that time (if I remember correctly) AND HE HAS A FLAMING SWORD.  It was right there.  Beric making the run and dipping that sword into the trench as undead piled on him would have been not only cool, but made more sense than Melisandre dashing out there and casting spells conveniently.  Who in the hell was clamoring for a Red Woman moment in this battle?  Her 2nd moment of the episode, actually.  No one.

Beric dying that way would have been more interesting than Melisandre. It also would have been complete bullshit. The trench was not set up to go aflame with such ease. The entire point was that dragonfire was suppose to be used. We needed something stronger than a flaming sword or torch. Beric and Melisandre may worship the same god, but Melisandre is way stronger in her powers than Beric.

From the article:

"The problem isn’t Arya killing the Night King. It is that the show arguably doesn’t put in the hard work to build up to the moment. What should be a triumph, for her and us, instead feels cheap, throwaway and silly – like something from one of Disney’s terrible Star Wars movies."

LOL at the idea that this show was not silly genre junk food from the beginning and only NOW has it "jumped the shark."

It did a really good job of masking it for the first few seasons by stocking up on non-essential characters and pretending they were essential. They gave it the "anyone can die" credibility as being a new kind of fantasy narrative.  It was around about season 5-6 that it became clear that "anyone can die" meant the same thing it does in most fantasy..."Anyone can die (except the long lost prince/princess who find each other and reunite to kill the evil thing)."

I'm kind of ashamed at how easily I was roped into thinking it was a special show and not just a very good genre show for as long as I did. But in order for that to have been true, Jon Snow would have had to stay dead and the story taken a hugely different turn at that point. Once he came back it was really really clear who was "special" and who wasn't...just as clear as in The Lord of the Rings or anything else similar.

It would guess that's it's probably too simple to say the show started going off the rails when they were no longer just adapting the books and had to go on their own, even with GRRM's input.

As someone who never cared for the show that much and only watched because his wife read the books and makes him, I'm kind of excited that people might retroactively go back and shit on it because of this one episode.

OH and I've got a question that's kinda driving us crazy, I hope someone can answer:

Did Jon Snow's dragon kill the Night King's dragon but also die? Was the dragon at the end the Night King's dragon OR Jon's dragon come back from the dead? My wife and her boss realized today that they didn't know the answer, which I thought was hilarious.

No, that was still Lich Viserion that was breathing fire at Jon. Rhaegal (Jon's dragon) dropped off somewhere wounded, but not dead.

Both Rhaegal and Drogon (Dany's dragon) are still alive as seen in the preview for next week. I did think they killed Jon's dragon though since it never came back before the end of the episode.

I'm still pretty mixed on the episode. A lot of the giant battle wasn't great, but I've thought for literal years everyone expecting the Night King to mean more were fooling themselves. The show (not the books, just the show) have made it crystal clear they are just Death personified. I don't have a problem with Arya coming out of nowhere, it's the kind of thing I expect from a tiny master assassin. I like that, even as the edges have softened a ton, they still didn't do the obvious Jon vs King epic fight, but subverted it again.

I thought the library scene was absolutely fucking awesome.

I don't like all the plot armor. I wish there had been one truly shocking death, like The Hound or something. I wish they had made the fight scenes more comprehendible. I strongly suspect, if I ever get to read them, Martin will handle this differently. But I'm okay with this.

And I'm ready to get back to what the show does best. Violent politics and people talking in ornate, elegant rooms.

So, would anyone have preferred it if rather than doing a Ninja Leap and screaming (nb: If you want to surprise attack someone, don't yell. Gives it away. Worked for Arya because he initial attack was a feint to set up the knife catch), Arya had been seen as one of the Wights in the scene, and then her eyes had gone from blue to brown because she'd been face changing as a disguise?

This is the other Arya reaction video people like:

Although if you watch last week's one, the way they go from cheering to grossed out for THAT Arya scene is also amusing.

That would have been cool. In hindsight Arya had lots of tools in her box to be the heroine in this circumstance - they just executed it in a really sloppy way.

I was really hoping/expecting that one of the final episodes would be flashback based giving the NK and that whole historical period a big twist. Shame that didn't happen. For all the graphics of the iron throne being positioned in winters thrall during previous seasons, that never happened either. Winter never even reached the capital: it's still tropical there!

The real characters to have died a death during the transition from book to TV are the clever complex ones like Tyrion & Varys. These TV writers can't deal in shades of subtlety; if they could, they'd be writers devoted to award winning long form too.

It sounds like filming for this was really arduous (I read Something about 60 days filming in sub 0 temperatures). Without the books to film to, somewhere along the way they just fucked it up

I thought Arya was going to pull the switcheroo with Bran while Theon was going nova on the zombies. But that would have required more thought to prep it than they gave it.

My ideal scene off the top of my head would have been:

Arya secretly doing the switch. Then Theon standing tall over some zombies. Arya/Bran says "Hey. You're a good man. etc" Night King comes. Theon STANDS HIS GROUND instead of charging. Night King comes over to fight, Theon holds his own for a couple seconds. Just as the Night King is about to gut Theon, we hear the knife go in the Night King's back and see Bran standing behind the Night King. The Night King drops, all the other zombies drop. Theon looks at Bran like "Bro, WTF" and Bran is like "And they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for this meddling kid."

Takes off Bran Mask.

I would have really liked a scene where someone with Valaryian steel killled a White Walker.  How did we not get that?

They could have set up a scene where Jaime or Breinne kill a White Walker and a chunk of the zombies disintegrate.  Would have at least made the Sam surviving nonsense a bit more plausible ..

Were the White Walkers actually part of the main battle or did all of them go to the Grove with the night king?

I was not paying super close attention during the fight, watching on my too dark iPad. ;)

If you watch a night scene in a brightly-lit room then that won’t help you see the image properly.”

This is exactly how me and my friend watched it.

I still had no fucking clue what was going on half the time.

I think they mostly were just hanging with NK and posing for heavy metal album covers.

Nope. They were barely around. They only showed up to escort Night King toward the end. Total BS.

Also, I watched the episodes with all the lights off, and it still looked unnaturally dark.
