I thnk the point they were making is that everyone wanted to reunite Gene and Gilda and that was trampling on the feelings of a grieving widow who lost her husband of 25 years, but since she wasnt a celebrity, it didnt matter. 

The last time i remember him really out in the  public was when people were asking him about the Wonka remake.
