DARK MATCH

- Hideo Itami defeated Curtis Alexander

Enhancement talent Curtis (not Cedric) Alexander did a lot of comedy and they had a fun match. Hideo Itami clobbered him with a GTS for the win.

Cruiserweight Classic Taping --
Quarterfinal matches were announced as having a 30-minute time limit.

- Zack Sabre Jr. defeated Noam Dar to advance to the semifinals

Great match, started slow with a lot of grappling. Crowd was pro-Zack Sabre Jr. and got very into it during the second half of the match. Intense leg work by Noam Dar on ZSJ. They traded submissions and the crowd was going crazy by the end when Sabre had an arm submission locked in with added punches.

- Gran Metalik defeated Akira Tozawa to advance to the semifinals

Another great match, they exchanged chops and dives to get the place going. Huge top rope rana for a near fall by Gran Metalik and a delayed German suplex by Akira Tozawa for his own near fall. Crowd was going wild for the finish, which was a Falcon Arrow by Metalik

- Cedric Alexander defeated Oney Lorcan

This was seemingly a showcase match for Cedric Alexander to prepare for his Raw debut. Crowd wasn't making noise early on even though the work was good. A handspring spin kick by Alexander got the people going. Oney Lorcan hit a huge uppercut.

Alexander finally hit the lumbar check for the win. Post-match, he looked in the camera and said “I ain't going nowhere!”

- Drew Gulak & Tony Nese defeated Kenneth Johnson & Lince Dorado

Tony Nese hit a 450 on Kenneth Johnson in a showcase match for Nese and Drew Gulak.

- TJ Perkins defeated Rich Swann to advance to the semifinals

Yet another great match, they showed their athletic ability yet kept the pace slow early to allow the match to build. There were taunts and dance moves, Rich Swann dabbed on TJ Perkins -- which lit the crowd up.

Swann sold a leg injury halfway through and it built to the finish where Swann tried everything he had, but could never get the pin fast enough due to his bad knee. TJP locked in his leg submission for the win. Crowd wasn't happy with this finish since Swann was the favorite. The two embraced post-match to show how important this was.

- The Bollywood Boyz defeated Sean Maluta & Ariya Daivari

Cool down match to allow The Bollywood Boyz to finally team up together. Fast-paced action and everyone got their big moves in to showcase themselves. Two splashes by The Bollywood Boyz for the win.

- Kota Ibushi defeated Brian Kendrick to advance to the semifinals

Crowd was unsure what to do early on. Brian Kendrick used a neckbreaker on the exposed metal rod between the buckles, and Kota Ibushi was actually counted out. The place went nuts with anger. William Regal came out and said Kendrick used an illegal move and the match must be restarted.

Full Sail lit up and and the match started going into dangerous near falls, Kendrick hit a nasty Burning Hammer-looking move where Ibushi's neck bent, crowd was furious with this. Kendrick kept going for the Bully Choke for near submissions. Ibushi hit a middle rope German suplex for a near fall and finally got a sit-out powerbomb for the win.

Post-match the two embraced, “Thank you Kendrick” and “Please sign Kendrick” chants until Daniel Bryan made his way down to hug Kendrick. A great moment to finish the round.

We are back on September 14th for the semifinals and to crown the winner of the CWC.

Dark match: Hideo Itami beat Ernest Alexander with the GTS.

(1) Quarterfinal #1 – Zack Sabre, Jr. beat Noam Dar.

(2) Quarterfinal #2 – Gran Metalik beat Akira Tozawa. Incredible match. Only behind Ibushi-Cedric from the last tapings. Not at that level, but great to watch.

(3) Cedric Alexander beat Oney Lorcan. Cedric got a big pop after his breakthrough performance last month.

(4) Tony Nese & Drew Gulak beat Lince Dorado & Kenneth Johnson.

(5) Quarterfinal #3 – TJP tapped Rich Swann with the same leglock he beat Gargano with. The crowd was not happy with the result, chanting “b.s.” Great match.

(5) The Bollywood Boyz beat Sean Maluta & Ariya Daviari.

(6) Quarterfinal #4 – Kota Ibushi beat The Brian Kendrick with his sit-out powerbomb. Five minutes in, Kendrick had Ibushi on the apron and hit a neckbreaker on the turnbuckle. Ibushi was counted out by the ref and the bell rang. I’m not sure if he forgot it’s a 10-count in the States and not 20, like in Japan, but he never got back in after taking a Flair Flop face-first on the ring apron. The crowd knew this wasn’t the finish and went berserk. Kendrick looked frustrated and Ibushi was still on the ground.

In some quick thinking they sent Regal out to say the move was illegal and he was in charge of the CWC and NXT, so he was restarting the match. This killed the crowd for the first few minutes of the restart, with people behind me complaining about it giving away the winner.

The two went on to have a fantastic match. It is a testament to the ability of both men to be able to make the crowd emotionally invest a second time. Highlights include Ibushi standing on the second rope on the inside of the ring and Kendrick on the second rope on the outside and Kota German-suplexing him over the top rope and into the ring. Kendrick went on apply his submission, but Ibushi got out and hit his finisher. After the official finish and the announcement of the winner, crowd hit Brian with heavy chants, including

After the official finish and the announcement of the winner, the crowd hit Brian with heavy chants, including: “Brian Kendrick” and “Thank you, Brian” and “One more match” and “Please don’t go.” This lasted a good five minutes. Kendrick was moved to tears.

At some point, Daniel Bryan threw down his jacket and ran down into the ring. The two embraced and Bryan and Kendrick began sobbing in each other’s arms. It was remarkable and definitely seemed like the last match of Kendrick’s fabulous career.

Just when you thought the Cedric saga from July would be the emotional highlight of the tournament, this public showcase of a brotherhood stole the spotlight and showed the bond the two have on a personal level. So damn proud to have watched those two live for so many years.

The semi-finals are set for the live finale on September 14:

Semifinals – Zack Sabre, Jr. vs. Gran Metalik
Semifinals – Kota Ibushi vs. T.J. Perkins

Has Ibushi worked in a promotion with a 10 count besides WWE? That was really awkward live and they probably won't keep it in but I hope they do cause it was hilarious.

Metalik/Tozawa and Dar/Sabre were so good. Metalik should win it all but I think it will be TJP.

Isn't Ibushi still refusing to sign with the WWE? This wouldn't have been so horrible to end his tournament run right here, if he isnt. Like Perkins/Kendrick, two veterans desperate to get back and/or into the upper echelon after years of personal problems, isn't a compelling semifinal?

I think they are still trying to convince Ibushi to sign so they are going take it down to the wire with him. They have basically 3 more weeks before they have to make a final decision on who wins

If who hasn't signed a contract wasn't a factor, it would obviously be an Ibushi vs. Sabre final.

Perkins stock has shot up with me in this tournament. I've always thought of him as a solid, but not spectacular, technician with no personality. He seems much, much more than that now.
