AUGUST 2016 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

Oh please, oh please, oh please!

Fast 8 got overshadowed at the finish line of filming by reports that Dwayne Johnson andVin Diesel had started feuding. But according to Life and Style Magazine, the battle between the two A-list action stars will end at Johnson's original workplace, and was created for an ultimate showdown at Wrestlemania all along.

The magazine's source claims that "They are playing a huge prank, and it’s all for publicity,” building up to a Wrestlemania match on April 2, 2017. By sheer coincidence, this would come 12 days before Fast 8 opens on April 14, which lends some potential credibility to these claims.

I think a tag match would work best.  John Cena and Vin Diesel versus The Rock and The Miz.  Battle for the control of Hollywood!

Weren't both TNA and WWE pulled into congress post 2000 over steroids? How about Brock last month?

Mickie James, Seth Rollins, and Isis brought sex related problems to the WWEs doorstep. And Hogan of course.

Hogan I'll give you because of what came out of the tapes, but none of those other things were even a scratch on pro wrestling as a whole. No one's hammering WWE about rampant steroid use even after Brock very publicly failed a legitimate test.

Most of it is probably that the general public's opinion of pro wrestling is so low, it takes a lot to taint it further.

Fair point. None of it really rocked the boat, but this seemingly unending trickle of small issue after small issue doesn't speak well of the company.

Totally forgot about the firing of Hugh Morris over rampant alleged sexual harassment. Really surprised that one didn't get more press. But as others have pointed out, wrestling has created it self into a very low perception point to the general public.

So which is viewed lower in 2016, porn or pro wrestling? As a person who has worked in and around both, I really can't say anymore.

I am putting this here because it applies to more than just Miz/Bryan

Per Meltzer (in both the newest WON and the latest radio show)

The WWE is purposely trying to do more "blurring of the lines" (between work and shoot)

Quote

It’s part of what appears to be a new promotional philosophy of blurring the lines and creating controversy, which started the night before with them working a Samoa Joe injury spot using the “X,” continued with the finish of Lesnar vs. Orton and two nights later featured Daniel Bryan walking off the set of Talking Smack leading to a Miz promo about how he doesn’t get respect and how he’s knocked for his wrestling but he never gets hurt .

The story behind Lesnar vs. Orton was to create a scenario where nobody knew where reality ended, and preferably where people thought Lesnar was breaking the code or script.

The start was the Cesaro promo. Of course - as Dave brought up - Cesaro is still in the same exact spot so does it really matter?

If a Cesaro falls in the forest and nobo...

I still can't believe a fake fighting company told one of their top performers to take two legitimately thrown elbows from a monster of a human being as part of their scripted performance. But it's WWE, so, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised after all.

If one match is a SHOOT BRO~! that just highlights that everything else on the card is fake BS, and screws with a person's ability to suspend disbelief. That was one of the glaring issues of Russo WCW.

The thing that's brilliant about the Miz/Bryan stuff and to a lesser extent the Cesaro promo is that even if you're not into the backstage stuff it still makes sense to you in universe. Miz and Bryan have had legitimate beef in storyline since day one and Miz's rant makes complete sense in character. He's not doing the stupid thing calling out how he was booked vs how Bryan was booked which just screams "This is fake stupid!"

I remember in the first half of the Attitude Era when I didn't know much better how I thought work-shoot stuff was cool and edgy.  By the second half I put up with it but it definitely lost that cool factor to me.  Fucking Russo.  The fact that they still think work-shoot stuff like the Brock match works is sad.  Sammo is on the money about the ones that make sense in the WWE Universe.  But Brock's thing and even Cesaro's promo just do nothing for me.  And we're going to get more of this which I'm not a fan of.

I mean, it's interesting to talk about, and they're not overt with it - as Sammo pointed out, it seems like it might be a shoot to smarks, but to regular fans, it fits in nicely as a work as well.

It's still not as good as traditional booking, though, as NXT in their very own company demonstrates. I wish they would just do a better job of traditional booking practices instead of trying this work-shoot hybrid shit that doesn't really stand the test of time like a well-booked angle where a vulnerable face rises up through adversity to become champion or whatever.

Isn't this literally Vince Russo's WCW philosophy? It even has the "work the boys in the back" element with Hayes not giving Jericho a straight answer about the finish. I don't see how anyone can defend this.

Wait, wasn't it put out there that Kidd's injury came about from the way that Kidd attempted to take the muscle buster?  If that's indeed true, why swipe at Joe for that?  How many other people since Joe's used the muscle buster have been injured by it?

Has that story ever been confirmed by a reputable source? Not saying that it didn't happen, but I don't recall hearing it from Meltzer and company.

Aka a big reason people stopped watching - nothing means much and the show goes no where.

What's fascinating, is I feel like every couple years they try to do more worked/shoot-y type stuff to capture the "is it real?" vibe of early NWO/Vince the evil boss stuff, yet the highest rated segment they ever made was a bunch of scripted nonsense with 2 guys and a sock and a cast of supporting characters.  I'm always baffled why they try going back to the shoot-y stuff when it never really draws, does it?

Can they seriously not think of a better way to work people than to have one of their main stars get his head caved in? The Joe/Nak stuff worked great. It looked legit and Joe sold it to perfection, and no one got hurt. Poor Randy would've been better off having Bryce Harper crack him in the head with a bat.

Nope, Taker vs Austin had a higher rating.
