[Best of] THE TOP 330 MOVIES OF THE 1990s

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Are you saying it's Scream's fault that its formula was so good that Hollywood ran it into the ground with shitty copy cat's?

No, I'm saying Scream was a mostly mediocre to shitty movie that somehow became absurdly popular and then a slew of terrible sequels and rip-offs drowned out the very concept of good horror movies for a generation.

I wish I had JT's original ballot, so we could compare and contrast. He must have PMed it to me, because it's not in my e-mail.

This is a true statement.  Also, I lost my original ballot when my hard drive crashed at home.  I gave Rippa my iMDB Internet Movie Snobbery ballot that I was going to post to my profile.  This was a mistake.

What's more movie snob than telling the world Hard Boiled is a Top 30 film of an entire decade?

You didn't google The Dallas Connection. didja?

My humor can't be that subdued.

I had a bunch of the original ballots in an old inbox. Phil, I just e-mailed you a spreadsheet with a few guys that were pretty involved in the original that don't appear to have voted this time. Perhaps a combined listing, minus the pageantry?

Marc
Jesus Damnit Tom Reagan
Manos99
keith_h
Josh Mann
Devin Intervention
Rev Ray
BankHoldup
Unipisser

Here are the other people who didn't vote this time that did the last time

Winnipagan

Cody Save

Paco

Isolde

theinsanemrx

odessasteps

Capt. Midnight

Some of these folks might be posting under different names now (not Paco and odessa obviously) but if you have any of their's floating around - shoot them too me.

Not seeing any of them. I know a handful of folks ignored the rules that I clearly spelled out and sent theirs via PM. Now that the board has blown up, they may be lost to time.

Having PC issues and my Mum isn’t well so hit and miss getting here right now.

I won’t quote every film I voted for, just some and one I would have had I watched it before, Clueless is the latter.

158) HITMAN HART: WRESTLING WITH SHADOWS
1998 - 246 Points - 5 Votes (Highest Vote: #14 Natural)

One of my favourite documentaries ever on one of my favourite ever wrestlers. Rippa posed the question about Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows vs. Beyond The Mat, I'm in the former camp.

114) MEN IN BLACK
1997 - 353 Points - 7 Votes (Highest Vote: #21 Natural and Rippa)

NOTE FROM RIPPA - I'm more surprised this didn't make the original list more than anything else.

We're film buddies! I'm surprised it didn't place first time around as well.

111) DEMOLITION MAN
1993 - 354 Points - 7 Votes (Highest Vote: #21 Newb82 and KJC McMahon)

Such a fun film with one of the best baddies of the decade in Wesley Snipes Simon Phoenix. My #31.

99) FROM DUSK TILL DAWN
1996 - 372 Points - 6 Votes (Highest Vote: #20 Natural)

Another fun film and the direction it goes!

86) GALAXY QUEST
1999 - 421 Points - 5 Votes (Highest Vote: #2 Death From Above)

NOTE FROM RIPPA - And I thought my #4 vote was going to be good enough for high vote. Also - someone is going to have to explain to me how this didn't make it the first time.

Agreed. A very funny film. Glad it's done well.

85) THE CROW
1994 - 424 Points - 6 Votes (Highest Vote: #2 Kyle Casey)

Pleasantly surprised to find I'm not the highest voter for this. Cheers, Kyle Casey. This closed out my top five. A top five comic book film for the story, performances, visuals and music. Love it.

72) ALADDIN
1992 - 457 Points - 9 Votes (Highest Vote: #28 CSC)

Number #35 on my ballot. Best thing about is Robin Williams performance as The Genie and the songs.

62) SCREAM
1996 - 525 Points - 10 Votes (Highest Vote: #2 Newb82)

#12 on my list. One of my favourite ever horror flicks.

Voted for Goldeneye. I wasn't able to rewatch it for the poll so had to rely on memory for placing it, my #38. Voted for Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery at #29, Batman Returns at #43, The Blair Witch Project was my 40th pick with Grosse Point Blank one place higher.

77) BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM
1993 - 448 Points - 7 Votes (Highest Vote: #4 Natural)

DIRECTOR: Eric Radomski, Bruce W. Timm
STARRING: Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, Hart Bochner
Placement On Original List: #127 (4 Votes)

I'd have thought Mask of the Phantasm would be higher here.

I'd have thought Mask of the Phantasm would be higher here.

Considering how many of the original voters of it didn't participate this time - I am pleased it moved into the Top 100 at all.

I orginally thought it was going to be just me and Natural keeping it on the backend of the countdown.

MotP just missed my top 10.  Still my favorite Batman movie ever.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was the first film I watched for this project while working out. I hadn't seen it in years and I found my opinions on it haven’t changed. The film is still the best DC animated film and when it comes to Batman, a top three Batman film. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm holds its own with the best Batman works either in the original source material, film or TV. It has a great story, animation and vocal performances with the highlight of the film when Bruce Wayne dresses as Batman for the first time ever. Everything about that scene is wonderful.

In this update CSC had the biggest gain with 5. Televiper pulled a goose egg, And Rippa tied it up. I haven't decided what it means to be the leader in high votes. If Rippa wins, it'll probably mean something bad.

In honor of the Natural I'm going to watch Batman: Mask of the Phantasm right now. I like a lot of cel animation , but I generally don't  consider it in a countdown like this.

Cheers! Hope you like it : ).

I did. I was lucky enough to have been born in '67 , so that when I was in my prime comic reading mode, it  was in the era of giant-sized and treasury editions, so that while I take Batman to heart, I'm not locked into a single interpretation like I am regarding Peter Parker, for example.  For me, Batman is a very wide canvas, open to a lot of great storytelling and this version fulfilled that promise. Having said that, a lot of great 90's films didn't get my vote, and I doubt this would have supplanted any of them. But, for me, this is all about new discoveries, and your hard pimping has led me to a new one. THANKS!!!!

123. PARADISE LOST: THE CHILD MURDERS AT ROBIN HOOD HILLS (Berlinger; Sinofsky, 1996) - 338 Points - 4 Votes (Highest Vote: #4 New Blood)
Only 4 votes is a real shame. One of the best documentaries ever.

I'm still coming up with a lot I haven't seen:

SAFE, RUMBLE IN THE BRONX, RIKI-OH: THE STORY OF RICKY, WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE, VARSITY BLUES, CEMETERY MAN, MY BEST FIEND, MAN BITES DOG, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE, THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE,  IMMORTAL BELOVED, SMOKE, STRICTLY BALLROOM, BEAU TRAVAI, THE LEGEND OF DRUNKEN MASTER, DELICATESSEN, NAKED, ARMY OF DARKNESS

You're welcome and well said about Batman open to different interpretations.

Having PC issues and my Mum isn’t well so hit and miss getting here right now.

Hope all is well, Natural!

Thanks, mate. Chances are my Mum will be going back into hospital sadly : (.
