[Best of] THE TOP 330 MOVIES OF THE 1990s

RIPPA

Have we had a discussion on here about Eyes Wide Shut because I think it would be pretty interesting. I have to admit.. I have seen it and I don't get it. Maybe a second viewing would help me out.

Best thing in hindsight of Eyes Wide Shut is the soundtrack. Masked Ball by Jocelyn Pook was the song i kept using for Dr Alquimia when i was writing the first issue.http://youtu.be/go4E4tNGQks

I'd love to talk about it. It's kind of like American Pie, where you have this Jason Biggs character who is presented all these chances to get laid, which he desperately wants to do, but he just can't get it done. The kicker being that Jason Biggs is played by Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise constantly telling everybody he's a doctor the whole movie, as if it's super reassuring and makes him a noble and instantly trustworthy man, makes me legitimately laugh every time. It reminds me of Lloyd Christmas yelling "It's OK, I'm a limo driver!!"

(I had Eyes at #16 on my ballot)

58) TOY STORY 2

1999 - 563 Points - 11 Votes (Highest Vote: #15 Brian Fowler)

Only ever watched this the once. I liked it (#32 on my ballot) but always preferred the original. Looking at my ballot I placed this over three other Disney films and I'm now wondering why I've done that. That's a botch.

55) THE LION KING

1994 - 587 Points - 11 Votes (Highest Vote: #17 CSC)

#34 on my ballot. See my second sentence on Toy Story 2.

47) AMERICAN BEAUTY

1999 - 658 Points - 11 Votes (Highest Vote: #9 Natural)

NOTE FROM RIPPA - Another example that the Top 20 has changed.

I know American Beauty is a divisive film but I'm surprised it's already shown up and I'm the highest vote for it. Watched it a few years younger than the film certificate but appreciate it more on my two viewings since I'm older.

I think Quiz Show was a film that would have been received much more universally if it came out any time within the last few years. Movies like Frost/Nixon and shows like Mad Men have made the sleek modern period drama very en vogue. Quiz Show is probably still the best of these, but since it came out when it was more of an anomaly it isn't in the same discussion as some of these other films.

Who was high vote on the original Buffy movie?

No clue since it didn't make the last countdown

I actually don't think I voted for BTVS.  The movie has a certain amount of charm, but it's not actually, you know, any good.

On the other hand, I damn sure did vote for True Romance.

45) SAVING PRIVATE RYAN
1998 - 711 Points - 11 Votes (Highest Vote: #4 JT)

Watched this December last year for the first time. The first twenty minutes are particularly powerful. #23 on my list.

44) FORREST GUMP

1994 - 717 Points - 10 Votes (Highest Vote: #9 Rippa)

#41 on my ballot. Infamous for beating The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction to the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1994.

It shocks me because you'd have thought that Craig would've been the high vote for a Kevin Smith movie.
