Casey
new James Blake and Radiohead got me to stop listening to hip-hop for a minute, but then Post Malone and Chance the Rapper dropped new mixtapes so I'm currently in a weird blend of music right now. And it's glorious.

I liked those parts when they were pieces of songs, I don't know if I like them as whole songs. I'll give it another listen, but as of now I don't really feel it. I do think that it will be sampled to death in the next few years, and I'll probably like those songs better.
Casey
It's definitely not as good as his self-titled album. I honestly didn't listen to Overgrown, might have to check it out this weekend and see how it stacks up. But really, I can listen to anything he does because that man's voice is fucking heaven. I saw him live a few years ago and he sounds just as good live as he does on record. It's a cover, but this might be my favorite song in his catalog. S.K.o.S.
Very bad news for Canadians (and all fans of the band) as the Tragically Hip announced that their lead singer, Gord Downie, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in late 2015. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/gord-downie-cancer-1.3596839
Death From Above
I just saw that. Jesus Christ, this fucking year. I've never been a giant fan of The Hip but come on they were the biggest band in the country for like 15 years it would have been pretty hard to miss them around here. For those that aren't familiar with them, this is one of my favourite live cuts ever, featuring an extended, bizarre made up story about a killer whale tank. Dewar
There was a school choir at work today singing Haddaway's "What is Love?" on the grand staircase. I'm pretty sure I am going to be smiling all day thinking about this. Not enough headbobbing though.
Dewar
Re: Gord Downie: That's some terrible news. Everyone in Canada knows at least a few Hip songs, and this is a massive deal up here. Sort of surprised they didn't try to line up any stadiums for their final tour this summer, because I am sure they could sell a few out, with everyone knowing it's their last time going across the country. This is probably my favorite Hip song:
Lamp, broken circa 1988
Usually this would only be news of use to, like, Death from Above and I, but this time I think it's a broader enough sound that I can recommend more people listen to the new Daniel Romano record, "Mosey." I'm only a few tracks in and it's excellent loungey psychedelia as opposed to his usual meticulously hardline country sound.
Greggulator
Trouble Boys: The Story of the Replacements is number one and the best. It's so great. The 'Mats are somehow one of the best bands of all-time despite doing absolutely everything, to say the least, to try and destroy any semblance of having a music career whatsoever. Obviously most of this was alcohol and drug fueled, but so much of it is just this collection of absolute misfits just enjoyed biting the hand that fed them more than anything else connected to making music and art to a wide audience. My favorite little snippet is when the literally burned their money. But it's not like they had a lot of it. Their managers would only give them $750 a month because they were afraid they would do shit like that, which they did anyways. A+ for anyone who loves sordid rock books.
JRGoldman
In the oral history they wrote about the Replacements, someone told a pretty great story of the Mats urinating in all the condiment bottles in Michael stipe's house while on tour. That is like a completely perfect rock and roll story, considering the people involved.
J.H.
Well damn, The new Monkees album is quite the little enjoyable listening experience. Some tracks are better than othrs but overall I enjoy all of Good Times quite a bit. "Me & Magdalena" is probably the track I like best just to hear Dolenz and Nesmith harmonize is kinda magical.

Modern country is such an army of lost children I can't even get people that like it to listen to Daniel Romano, never mind people that hear that twang and curl into a ball. I just found out about them like last year when Chuck Taylor did a reddit AMA and said they were his favorite band. I have no idea why, but I decided to check them out on a whim, and even though there are a lot of hard rock elements, I think their mellower material might be something you guys should check out. The albums by them that I like most so far are their self titled, one called Tennessee, and one called Nobody's Darlings.

Death From Above
Sometimes I get ideas for weird side projects. For example, what would a "History of musical performances on the Late Show with Dave Letterman" look like? This video is fucking great.
Casey
(I love the Beastie Boys. Really honored to have been at Bonnaroo in 2009, the last time they were together, live, as a trio. But... it wasn't the best performance ever. Understandable, though.) Do we still have a hip hop thread? Either way... fuck, Kanye is killing it this year. Cruel Winter is going to be awesome, this is just too good. On the polar opposite side of hip-hop, new Clams Casino single "Witness" with Lil' B the BasedGod is pretty dope too. (BP)
Letterman had perhaps Dylan's greatest TV performance. It still kills me he never toured or recorded with the Plugz afterwards.
Death From Above
Serious question. Is there any explanation out there whatsoever for why Dylan sings like a totally normal human being on Nashville Skyline and he sounds nothing like it either before or since?
(BP)
He said the Nasville Skyline/Self Portrait voice was a result of quitting smoking, but it seems most likely that the "Dylan voice" is a put-on/singing technique. He even sort of slips in and out of it during session outtakes in the Bootleg series. During the late 60s he was trying to distance himself from the,"Spokesman of a Generation," stuff and tried to reinvent himself as a country crooner.

Burgundy LaRue
I know Prince Be had battled diabetes for several years, didn't realize it had gotten that bad. RIP. "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" will always be a favorite, but PM Dawn had several great songs. Elsalvajeloco
RIP Bernie Worrell...Besides Bootsy Collins and Dr. Funkenstein himself of course, Bernie was the most instrumental in the overall sound, groove, and precision (as well as the writing end) of the P-Funk sound. If you don't have Bernie, you don't have out-of-this-world musical collision with the ex-James Brown band members (including Bootsy and his brother Phelps aka Catfish who played with P-Funk during a couple of the tours in the heyday) in that 74-79 period. What an incredible keyboard player. In the words of the late, great Parliament Funkadelic vocalist/rhythm guitarist Glen Goins, "Bernie, can you play little while?" Rest in power.
