ha that's why I included that one. Leaf is infamous in their wrestling sets for just slapping two random wrestlers together, I have no idea why they do that.

Probably the same reason that they did a twelve-card chase set of Frank Thomas. This along with grading services and all the sleaze that is entailed by that is why I left the hobby. Look, I liked Frank Thomas as a player, he almost made the White Sox interesting, almost... Seems like a good dude, you might even go so far as to say that I'm a fan of the guy. Why yes, I do have a file wherein I try to get one example of each of his cards and here's where it gets nasty... I don't mind having to get  a Topps, Fleer, Upper Deck. Score, Leaf, Stadium Club, Pinnacle, & Donruss. That's eight cards of most regular players (oh crap, I forgot Bowman that's nine) not counting the bizarre little sets that exist for reasons... I'm sure if I poke around I will find enough regular issue cards of Mr. Thomas to bring the total to a dozen, but thanks to the good folks at Leaf I needn't worry that a mere dozen cards will be the final tally of images of the Big Hurt; just to make sure that we have a much of a muchness in regards to Mr. Thomas' beaming visage, Leaf has produced a short-print chase card set of a dozen cards featuring Mr. Thomas engaged in various activities. I would be remiss if I were not to point out that the last time a player was honored by this sort of attention it was when perhaps the only hitter not named "Bonds" who can be ranked with Mr. Thomas, a chap named Ted Williams who had an entire card set dedicated to him.

Where can you get those? I tried googling, but all that came up were articles about the set or ebay listings for way the fuck too much

Online shops were selling boxes for between $155 and $175, sadly that's just the retail cost of the box. But its a non-fluff box, each one has six autographs or five autographs and a 1/1 art redemption (I got one of those as well). But its definitely pricey.

I'm convinced that Leaf just has a drawer full of sticker autographs and just makes random cards with them, without caring if it makes sense. I mean this set has Larry Hennig in it and he died almost two years ago. This set was better than the last one with making the pairings make sense (I can even make the leap for why Honky Tonk Man and Johnny B. Badd make sense together) but they still had a few that shouldn't exist.

I, for one would not be bitching about getting an autograph pull of Larry "The Axe" Hennig. However, you could be on to something... Back in the 1990s I self-published my horror anthology DARKSIDE... No major publisher would take a chance so I proved that I knew what I was doing by putting the thing out as a signed, limited leather-bound collectible which sold out promptly securing me a much bigger paperback deal than what I was looking for in the first place. Turns out that I had many more signature pages than I needed, (I've always been paranoid about sig pages that have to go overseas and have always printed double what I actually needed. soon as pages are safe and sound in the US again, I relax and realize that the extras aren't needed. However, as is often the case the pages that get done at a mass signing like at World Horror Con, we wind up with lots of extras, because I just buy a bunch of beer and pass out the pens. I save a ton in postage and a fine time is had by all. However, among the signed pages were a bunch signed by Brian McNaughton, Brian passed away a few years ago, but not before getting to see his best horror stories collected in two volumes by my buddy at Wildside Press, John Betancourt. While I was looking at my copies of Brian's books and bitching to myself  that his work deserved being preserved in hardcover it occurred to me that I could make this happen... After a phone call and some work with an X-acto knife, we had enough signatures to make a double-alphabet run (52 copies) of a signed set of Nasty Stories and Even  More Nasty Stories possible. Brian would have thought it hilarious, I didn't mention that his main writing income came from porn, where his characters were often named for famous horror writers from the past or characters that they had invented. So yes, there is a scene where Sherrie Cthulhu does the nasty with a client...

Oh I wasn't complaining, I did pull one, it just caught me off guard.

But I do agree that people/companies/etc do sign extra, especially when its something like stickers or panels. That's how Leaf produced cards with Chyna after she passed away, they probably have wrestlers sign a few hundred and then only use a portion, and they are smart enough to keep the leftovers.

That Suzuki card is great

The Suzuki card is great, but I am still in awe over the lovely penmanship of Butch Reed. It's just difficult to reconcile with his habit of pissing on the carpet of every motel he's ever stayed at. (And yes, I have it on really good authority that this factoid from the Sleaze Thread is 100% true). Not that I'm surprised that a pro wrestler / rodeo cowboy is given to such practices, but I am surprised at his lovely penmanship, the only thing that I can figure is that he must have attended Catholic school, 'cause that shit didn't come from public school in Missouri.  (Of course, I refer to his penmanship, not his bathroom habits, which I don't believe are emphasized in either public or private school.)

I don't know, I think I would derive a perverse sense of pleasure in getting a chase card that's just random as fuck. How about getting two of my all-time favorites that have absolutely no connection that I can think of? Pete Dunne and El Samurai!!!  How about two all-time great psychos? Johnny Valentine and Mark Lewin? LA Park & Jushin Liger? Yes, I would pay stupid money for any of these...

Okay, this will show my age, but it is possible that we have some baseball card collectors who are intrigued by the Monopoly Years (1964-1980) when Topps was the only game in town after Fleer demonstrated a near-epic level of incompetence producing: A full set of Ted Williams doing Ted Williams things   like sitting in cockpit of a jet fighter, fishing, catching a fish (a really nice bass; sorry, but it had to be said), cleaning a fish, frying a fish, selecting a good wine to enjoy with bass, (WINE?!?!?!?! What are you, some sort of effete Yankees fan or something? This is Ted Williams, he plays for Boston and drinks nothing less manly than Samuel Adams Summer Ale!!!), this was followed by two sets  of greats of the past. The first one was really pretty damn good, though someone should have told "Sunny" Jim Bottomly that just because you CAN do a given thing (in this case squeeze into your old uniform) doesn't mean that you SHOULD do a given thing. That quibble aside, I'm of the opinion that until you run out of living  HOFrs there's simply no reason to start making cards of random guys that aren't now nor ever likely will be, considered for the HOF...

If you guys can find any 2019-2020 NBA packs or Boxes at Walmart or Target buy it because they are flying off the shelves.

Okay, I am old and stupid so I'll ask the obvious question: Why?

Keep in mind that I possess a great disdain for basketball as a game for tall, gangling freaks that can't hit a curveball.

Two fold: 1st Zion/Ja Morant RCs that are climbing up in value and 2nd after Kobe died people are buying it up like crazy.

Main Reason is if you can find it you can resell it for 3 or 4 times what you paid for it or go Zion or Morant hunting.

Prizm is the big item you any looking for a $10 or $11 pack depending on walmart or Target are currently going for close to $100 for an unopened pack.

Who and who? Okay, I know who Kobe was, but the other two chaps you mention are drawing a big blank from me.

Zion Williamson is a Rookie out of Duke who has had a Hype Train behind him for a few years and is a phenom.

JA Morant is a Rookie out of Murray State who carried his team to the NCAA Tournament last year and will probably win Rookie of the Year plus had his team in the Playoffs before the shutdown.

Thank you, HS! I pay as much attention to basketball as I do to celebrity bowling, which is to say none at all. The only basketball I watched this year was the end of the OKC / Houston game while I was waiting for UFC to start. I will say, that chap with the bushy beard, Harder/Harden? Seems pretty damn good.

I don't know if it is because of the pandemic or because of supply and demand but there are almost no cards in my Walmart or Target.   Not even those blaster boxes.

The Orange Shit-gibbon was on TV saying that he'd "read some interesting reports" that shoving basketball cards up your ass could lessen the impact of the Corona-virus. Now he's not advocating this practice, just repeating some things that he's heard good reports on.

Not only are cards scarce but hobby boxes are way up in prices. I dunno if people are bored or what but flippers are buying up everything, maybe COVID is just making people desperate to try to score some quick cash. I haven't purchased any football boxes since May which is an eternity for me but I am not paying $250 just for a box of Gold Standard.

Flippers! They buy the Boxes as soon as they get put out.

Last summer Super70sSports on twitter announced they were doing a set with Topps. I pre-ordered 3 boxes, they shipped in December and they finally just arrived. Each box came with 20 cards and it is a pretty neat retro style set, decided to scan a few of them to give you guys a look.

Obviously the winner is the Bert Blyleven auto, as who doesn't love Bert? Some fun subsets; Happening Hairdos, Spectacular Spectacle, Memorable Managers, apparently there is also one for moustaches, but I didn't get any.

As you can see by Donnie Baseball's card, they each have the Topps doodle and they are made from the old school cardboard stock.

Kevin Durant and Logan Paul Agree: Sports Trading Cards Are the Future

Quote

"Investment group is spending $40 million for a majority stake in sports-memorabilia firm Goldin Auctions"

Plus sports cards are having a bit of a moment in general. As someone who was a giddy obsessed child during the 80s/early 90s card boom, I don't see how this doesn't end in the same way.

Quote

“We have something the hobby has never had before,” Goldin said an interview. “All of a sudden, we’re cool. We’re part of pop culture.”

Clearly this guy wasn't paying attention when the Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck card dropped.

Quote

Chernin Group, a Los Angeles-based investment firm.... leads a blockbuster group of investors, including basketball star Kevin Durant, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, YouTube star Logan Paul and podcaster Bill Simmons.

What a motley crew. At least with Bill Simmons around, Logan Paul can be assured he isn't the most detestable person in the group

And 2 of those 9 pictured have now passed away, too.
