Dummy Mike Harris says Koe is curling great. Koe proceeds to wreck on a draw, and then totally flub a draw, and loses to a vastly less talented American team. Cannot determine who I like less, Dummy Mike Harris or Kevin Koe himself.

Canada is two medals away from tying their best ever Winter Olympics haul, and that's with women's curling flaming out before the playoffs, and the men's team possibly not getting a medal.

It's kind of nice not having to rage over any one medal because we have people that do other things now. It's like Canada went all in for the Vancouver Olympics then realized there was actually nothing stopping us from doing that at any winter games, really.

If team doping wins the gold because the NHL refused to let it's players compete (and remember that was done to punish the players for not caving to the league's demands in labor negotiations) Gary Bettman deserves to burn in the ninth circle of hell for all eternity (I mean even more than he already does).

Wait, Germany beat Canada?  What the flying fuck?!  That is very surprising to see them lose, especially in a semifinal game.  I still can't believe they didn't gold in Curling.

The Canadian captain was the long retired 40+ year old Derek Roy. There's your answer.

Yep, that does explain it.  But hey, at least Canada gets a medal (unless they lose the bronze game) unlike the US men's team.

It is not Bettman's fault the NHL players are not there.  Blame the IOC.  The NHL cannot use any player footage because the IOC holds onto it with an iron grip.

Want to use the Crosby Gold Medal winning goal footage?  Nope.  Want to use any footage of an NHL player in the Olympics for advertising purposes?  Nope.

If the IOC was not such a pain with respect to footage they would be there.  Imagine the playoff commercials using footage of players in the Olympics.

The whole dispute came down to the NHL wanting to use footage of their players for promotional purposes, past and present, and the IOC refused every request.  The NHL wanted top sponsor status where they could use footage of the players like Wheaties and so on.  The NHL is giving the IOC their players for two weeks so they should get something in return, right?  Not according to the IOC.

I don’t blame the owners for not wanting to shut the league down and risk their stars getting injured.

the players should have pushed harder for it during the CBA, if they really wanted to go (and/or got 3 weeks off for the rank and file players, the majority of the union.)

that said, the league will not pass up playing in China in 4 years.

The league specifically told the players they would allow them to compete in the Olympics if they made labor concession. They used it as a bargaining chip.

Problem solved, right? Not so fast. Reports then surfaced that the IIHF's offer wasn't good enough for the NHL, which was seeking something akin to "top sponsor" status with the IOC. Such a deal would give the league additional marketing considerations and the use of certain Olympic content on its own platforms.

When do you ever see Men's Ice Hockey footage used by the NHL?  The whole dispute is over the ability of the NHL to use Olympic footage.

Of course, the league would use it as a bargaining chip.  That is natural CBA negotiations.  The players never negotiated the Olympics last time so this would require opening up the CBA.

The NBA is a much bigger league so the added exposure means very little to the NBA's bottom line.  Basketball is a Summer Olympic sport and does not require stopping the league in progress for two weeks.  Same goes for soccer in Europe.  The Olympics are during the off season.

It sucks for small sports that the IOC keeps an iron fist over past footage.  Do they have a WWE style app where you can stream past footage?  Nope.  The current app is as bare bones as you can get.

So now, when the Olympics end everyone walks away.  Sports like Luge and Skeleton that were billed as Extreme Sports will lose all their momentum because there is no footage online.  Everyone will forget about those sports in a week and they drift back into obscurity.

But the WNBA (which is a summer league) always stops for the Olympics. The reason is very simple: the Olympics bring attention to their sport and in turn to their league. Who cares if the NHL can't use footage? They benefit from the exposure and their players become bigger stars.

No they don't there zero evidence that there is a boost to attendance or ratings for NHL games post Olympics.

The Olympics get the boost in ratings.

The use of footage is the key point.  The NHL wanted top tier sponsor levels so they can use the footage.  By putting the footage in a vault, it hurts all of the sports.

Seriously, there are so many fantastic stories being told.

I expect Netflix to greenlight a mini-series on the curling team alone. I'd watch the fuck out of that!

EDIT: Wow, great read! “People coined us Team Rejects”

Make that mini-series now!
