JUNE 2016 WRESTLING DISCUSSION THREAD

Recommended Posts

Once again, I never once complained about the spotiness of the match. However, chops are chops. I've NEVER seen anyone try and "simulate" a chop. Shit, Hogan, who liked to work fairly light, would take a chop. Sure, there are some dude who chop WAY too stiff. However if ya don't want to take a chop or deliver one, leave them out of the match.

In general, you should only do things that you do well. That is true. That said, I have no problem personally with someone slapping to enhance any of their offense, so long as it's not visually distracting. It's like a magic trick. You're doing something with one hand to distract from what you're doing with the other. If they can't execute that well, however, then they shouldn't do it; I agree. I have no problem with it in general though.

For me, the chops take a back seat to homeboy popping right back up after the death valley driver (hey, that's the name of the site) on the apron. Everything else about the match, while I 100% understand why purists would argue against it, I was ok with. I didn't leave Batman vs Superman pissed off because it wasn't believable that Ben Affleck fights crime at night.

Picture this - Kobashi and Sasaki slapping their legs during their epic chop stand-off. No marks on their chest but both have bright red thighs

1. Kobashi and Sasaki are beefy enough to take a full on knife edge.

2. Both of those guys already knew they were going to chop the shit out of each other as that spot had probably been mulled over and staged far in advance of the match.

As Matt said, never work stiff for the sake of stiffness and NEVER surprise a guy with stiffness if he expects you to work light.

Be a professional.  If the guy you are chopping wants you to slap your thigh, slap your fucking thigh.

JStout must have balls of steel for cheering Gangstas in SMW!

Also, that Hardy's video is definitely Wrestlecrap material

I was young and stupid. Now I'm old and stupid.

As far as defending leg slapping, it should be fairly clear that "flippy dudes leg slap, it's what they do" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of the practice. I'm joshing about it. I just turned my brain off for it, I didn't even notice the no-sell of the DVD and I generally HATE that kind of thing. I just clicked the analytical part of my wrestling watching off and watched guys trade moves.

It's like my analogy about music fans only liking one kind of music. I loves the new Radiohead album, right? But sometimes I just wanna listen to some light, bubblegum pop. Flippy-do matches are the bubblegum pop of the wrestling world.

Homeboy did not "pop right back up" after the DVD.  Ricochet picked him up and rolled him in the ring, at which point he countered and did a really cool and well timed spot.  His opponent literally lifted him off the ground and he countered.  Then they both sold.

I've been watching guys barely sell or no sell piledrivers, power bombs and DDT's on the floor in Japan for as long as I've been a wrestling fan. There's one guy who is still active and doing that stuff that many people hold up as one of the greatest ever.

Ospreay and Ricochet probably have so many promoters in their DM's trying to book Ricochet vs Will Ospreay for their promotion that they don't even know how to manage it all.

I have some critiques of Ospreay but he's very young and his job is to get over and get noticed. Seems like he's done that quicker than anyone in recent memory. Ricochet's been in high demand for a few years now too.

More power to both guys for making something of themselves in this crazy business.

Sometimes all I really want to see is an insane match where dudes flip around and do crazy-ass shit I didn't know a human body could do. I love that match. I would be 100% fine if the WWE cruiserweight thing was just a variation of that.

If I'm misremembering that, my mistake. Either way, ill say that i just wish that the selling of that got a little more room to breathe. Maybe that's nitpicky on my part but that's why we're here right?

Going down the TNA video rabbit hole on youtube thanks to Matt and Jeff's home movie, I learned that James Storm pushed Mickie James off a railroad platform (possibly into an oncoming train) last year. How did that angle play out?

About like you'd expect.  Went nowhere.  Mickie reappeared a short time later (following week?) no worse for wear and complained that Storm "tried' to kill her and they couldn't be friends anymore.  It was really just a thing to build the Magnus/Storm feud.  All three were gone from TNA shortly thereafter.

The only time thigh-slapping has ever really bothered me has been when people have done it on whiffs, but I guess it's justifiable if you imagine that slapping the leg is not meant to enhance the sound of the impact and is just part of the maneuver.

The best part of the Mickie James/James Storm thing was some wackado TNA fans called the cops after the angle aired and Storm was paid a visit by the police

IT'S STILL REAL TO THEM, DAMMIT~!

Ricochet and Ospreay will land in the WWE sooner or later and then everyone will talk about how "innovative" they are.

If they're not calling Vader to book a three-way, they're just leaving money on the table.

Didn't some old lady call the cops during an Stone Cold match cause he was getting beat down and she didn't like it?

You're a little mixed-up.  Stone Cold's old lady called the cops cause she was getting beat down and she didn't like it.

Speaking of Ricochet, he is doing a guest spot for PCW Australia next month. They are the organization that started the careers of Emma and Buddy Murphy and have had a number of their workers train at the Storm Academy.

Ricochet will be performing at their show on July 30 and then will be doing a meet and greet/Q&A night on July 31.

I hope he gets some random question about Helios or something as odd.

I can overlook no-selling. I can overlook doing flips for no reason. I can even overlook thigh-slapping chops. But I cannot, under any circumstances, overlook saying "pip pip cheerio, motherfucker" while executing a phenomenal forearm. Minus five stars.

Aren't they also that promotion that had kids doing death matches till the local council stopped it and a guy working for them jailed for having a huge cache of child pornography?

No argument, please, but why would he deserve to be in the HoF? Don't give me the Koko example. Would it be because he was a draw in such a short amount of time? I mean, he didn't really DO anything, besides kill Bret Hart.

Again, no Koko.

He'd sell tickets and shirts. That's all it takes.
