UFC 176 is postponed. Aldo-Mendes will be rescheduled, probably in October. Story to come soon on @YahooSports

Jeremy Botter ‏@jeremybotter  23s

There it is - per @KevinI, UFC 176 is being postponed. I can add that Aldo/Mendes is being discussed for Brazil, but nothing definite.

Aldo-Mendes moved to October, @lorenzofertitta says.

Well, both MGM and Mandalay Bay Events Center are booked for that day. But I wonder if Wynn Resorts would put the same effort or even help UFC at all promote that show like they did Martinez/Chavez and past T&M fights. Wynn has been so integral for those off the strip shows being successful for boxing. But at the same time, there is a reason why Arum chooses Macau over T&M for Pacquiao fights. Can't be paying a guy $20 million* and roll him into a venue w/o a nearby gambling scene.

* = Pacquiao owes a bunch to the IRS anyways so it's way less than that

I can understand why the UFC did this.Aldo has pulled out of too many events to be trusted as a headliner without a big co-main that can stand on its own.Canceling this event gives UFC some more flexibility for their Sept 5th, Foxwoods vs. Mohegan Sun Connecticut Casino head to head show down with Bellator. Mousasi vs. Jacare would look great on that card. With all that said, what I don't understand is why UFC isn't more like pro wrestling in the 'card is subject to change' type of way?

Let's not pretend Jose Aldo is a draw because he is not. Again, when you look at the lowest buyrates since UFC 100- Aldo is part of 3 or 4 of them (August would have made 4 or 5). Would Mousasi/Jacare serving as a mainevent REALLY do that bad? Was there NO ONE ELSE waiting in the wing? The UFC has 500 fighters on the roster and they couldn't find another main event? Imagine WWE cancelling a show like BattleGround because one of the principles in the main event got injured? It wouldn't happen. I think the UFC needs to stop being dramatic and cancelling shows. UFC putting on a boxing cards (i.e. 151) needs to stop.

They need to basically cut 2-3 PPV's out of their schedule next year.  That will help lighten the load.  PPV business is not what it used to be.

So if its postponed, does that mean that another event will be UFC 176?

Yes and yes.

And your final point contradicts the first point. Boxing cards now (ESPECIALLY after watching Crawford/Gamboa and some Showtime cards this year) are about 3-4 bouts deep. The only reason why it isn't 5 fights like UFC is because title fights are 12 rounds. If you have something awesome and fun like Crawford vs. Gamboa, you automatically cancel out how awful the fight before it was. A good portion of the Showtime cards last year were tripleheaders but plenty ended up with one good/great fight and two lacklusters/average at best ones. But from a paper standpoint (and w/o hindsight), the name power was on par (if not better in comparison) with most UFC PPV cards. However, style matchup wise, some of the fights stunk. Bernard Hopkins has been one of my favorite fighters for several years, but he don't make good fodder for fight of the year candidates. Any casual boxing fan can tell you that. Making a boxing style card (unless you mean Top Rank PPV undercards) doesn't mean what it did during the end of the Don King era.

Fertitta says that either Frankie Edgar or Cub Swanson could step up for an interim title bout versus Mendes if Aldo can't go in October.

Even though Aldo got hurt days before the announcement was made, what he suffered doesn't sound like shit you just need 45 days to get over.

Guest Edwin

Meanwhile, Anthony Pettis hasn't defending his title in coming up on a year...

If asked, they'll just probably say he's excused because he's filming TUF.

I'd much rather watch Mendes fight Edgar if Aldo can't go, but Cub is more deserving of a title shot, but there's a good chance they skip over Cub for Edgar.

The last boxing card I enjoyed from start to finish was Mayweather/Maidana. Khan put in worker and Broner was a complete dick during and after his fight. Majority of boxing cards are built around 1 fight and one fight only. If Mayweather was unable to compete- I could understand Mayweather Promotions/Golden Boy pulling the show. The majority of the people buying a Mayweather fight are wanting to see Mayweather and NOTHING else. Sure you get in a nice performer from Khan and Broner and shit is cool, but ask the majority of the fans why they are watching. I feel UFC  PPV is different as it compromises more of fans of stuffing instead of potatoes and fans who want to see other fights outside the main event. Because of this, and with 500 fighters on the roster, why not run the event? Again, how much money is the UFC expecting to loose with one of their lowest draws NOT headlining a show?

I am going to look into comprising a list of all 500 UFC fighters and the current injuries to make this thing easier to track.

Re: Oversaturation

Think about this for a moment: May 2014- June 2014 the UFC held 6 events. Six! In ONE MONTH'S time! That's too fucking much. Its simple. Run 12 Fox shows. 12 FX shows. 12 PPVs.  Any other event should be held on Fight Pass. These UFC/MMA legends that are trash and have proven NOT to be a draw should be relegated to Fight Pass. I am talking about guys like Henderson, Shogun, The Nogueria Brothers, D. Sanchez, Akiyama, Mir, etc. I believe their exclusive presence on Fight Pass will give MMA/UFC fans more reason to buy Fight Pass. Leave TV and PPV for the new generation that has something to offer; guys like DC, Jones, Bader, Davis, Dillashaw etc.

UFC should also look into trimming the roster. WCW, at its apex, didn't even have 500 performers on payroll.  The UFC should also look into what stupid shit is being done in practice for these guys/girls to get hurt at the rate they are getting hurt. It would benefit the UFC to cut down on shows and run an investigation into training camps and probably lay out a list of barred activies leading up to fights.

Re: Pettis

Jesus, has it been a year? Fuck. Strip him. I believe a champion should defend his/her belt in one year. If it cannot be defended- the champion should be stripped of the title.

This is essentially every UFC card from 2005 to now save for UFC 92, UFC 100, and UFC 168. That's 3 cards out of a bajillion. Four if you wanna count Shogun clotheslining Liddell on UFC 97.
