I really loved the chemistry between the main folk (Panther, Shuri, Okoye, Nakia). You'd think Danai Gurira just generally makes her living as a badass, rather than be a Tony-winning playwright who just happens to act on the side. A film that had A LOT to say.. this touched on everything from colonists to isolationism, it was beautifully done, the world building was perfect. No dumb corny joke making. Killmonger is MCU's best villain by a wide margin. I think this might top Winter Soldier for Marvel's best film. The cast was flawless. Only bad shit was some of the CGI at the end. Nitpicking, but none of this affects how much I liked the movie, but this exposed the problem with using guns in PG-13 or even in these movies. I know the sight of red might be graphic, but Disney/Marvel need to reconsider allowing blood to show when someone gets shot. I'm not talking about gratuitous blood sprays, but something more than what we got. People get shot without any squibs and there's just a disconnect when that happens. Honestly, if anything bugged me about the movie, it was... Spoiler Killing Klaw, killing Killmonger, and that train fight. I would have preferred BP and Killmonger going at it on the battlefield instead of the train tracks. Coogler managing to make a movie that seamlessly combines several different genres was some high level filmmaking. There was a social commentary component that would've been at home in a Spike Lee film, a set piece that finally gave us our black James Bond, and all the kicky punchy stuff you expect in a superhero movie. I liked WW but the people wanting it to get the first "serious" noms baffled me - this movie, though, I would definitely consider an award worthy achievement. Killmonger was an incredible character. Between Vulture as a blue collar schmuck sticking it to elites/bureaucrats and now Killmonger, Marvel has really fixed their problem with one dimensional forgettable villains. I'm so pleased they've moved away from the CGI End Boss shit that DC is obsessed with and have figured out how to give us a memorable antagonist. 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

J.T. Posted February 20, 2018 Share Posted February 20, 2018 Saw Black Panther on Saturday with my boo and my kid. It was pretty fucking awesome but being an avid reader of Black Panther as a kid and an adult, there were a few things that bummed me out. Spoiler The flip flopping of the roles of W'Kabi and M'Baku was annoying. W'Kabi is one of the most loyal Wakandans in the comics and M'Baku is of course the fucking Man-Ape and premier BP bad guy. The poetic license taken with the characters made sense in the context of the story, but it kinda hurt seeing W'Kabi turn traitor. The redemption of the Jabari and M'Baku joining the Council made for a good narrative and fit in with the unity vibe at the end of the movie.. Killmonger committing suicide also made sense in the context of the narrative, but I kinda hated it. BP's rogues gallery is limited enough as it is without killing off the most interesting MCU villain to date. Same with Klaue. His death also made perfect sense within contest of the narrative, but I was really bummed that we'll never get an appearance of The Master of Sound and again, BP's notable enemies are small in number as it is so who is going to be your next antagonist moving forward and can you make a decent story with that opposition? I kinda figured that we wouldn't get Klaw, Master Of Sound since Klaue in the MCU somehow ended up with Moses Magnum's super smuggler and arms dealer portfolio with the earthquake powers swapped out for the sound blaster instead of the mad scientist identity that Klaue / Klaw had in the 60's and 70's. So, given how everything shook out, I'm assuming that in the inevitable event of a sequel, they'll probably roll with Nekra or adopt bits from the Dark Reign / Passing The Mantle storyline and bring in Morlun. I don't know if anyone really needs an updated version of The Mandrill in a BP sequel. I thought it was interesting how Coogler kept the audience from 100% sympathizing with Killmonger's ideology and personal plight by having him do ruthless villain things like poisoning female museum curators and murdering defenseless people in cold blood.. Every mark on his body represented a life he personally took. As much as you want to sympathize with him because of his personal tragedy and path in life, he was definitely a legit monster. It was also awesome to see Wakanda as a hypothetical example of what an African nation unfettered by colonialism or slavery might look like. The Black Panther movie had a lot of the MLK / Malcom X back and forth that the X-Men comics did in the '60's had when it was a more blatant fable about racism. I don't think that Killmonger's dying words shattered T'Challa as much as they inspired him to right the wrong of Wakandan isolationism his way rather than follow Killmonger's path of conquest or T'Chaka's path of selective ignorance.. Regarding Morlun, I figured we'd see him in a Spidey movie, but since Spidey's rogues gallery is more loaded than BP's, I wouldn't mind seeing him as a foil for BP. The only question is could they? Then I reminded them that if Killmonger were a real life person, he'd either want them dead or chained up a labor camp in service the greater Wakandan empire. I was about to nerd correct you (I though his name was GIGANTO~?) but then I remembered that the first Giganto was a Deviant mutate controlled by the Mole Man and the FF license is still 20 Fox property until the Disney sale goes through.
