Sept Wrestling Jibber Jabber Thread

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

WWE just put up a bunch of debuts  (Y2J, Tazz, Batista, Cena, etc.)

I could've sworn D-Von was using his awesome Eyes of Rightessnous theme song. They have got to recycle that for someone at some point.

I forgot D-Von was Vince's spiritual advisor.  Now I can't decided what I'd like more:  Vince in a black gospel choir ala Forrest Gump or Pentecostal Snake Handling Vince.

Funny thing popped into my head, over these last few posts: Fantasy booking gets generally looked down upon, but then it's actually pretty fun to read alternate takes on angles ... but if there's ever a thread specified for such discussion, I would probably avoid it like the plague. Weird.

There was the briefly awful period when he was feuding against the Dungeon of Doom where he went all black and more nasty in the ring after he got his mustache shaved. But whether that was the beginning of Hollywood is probably a reach.

I had nearly forgotten the "dark side of Hogan" angle... Havoc 95 is one of the most hilariously bad ppvs of all time. But Hulk was back in the red and yellow for the subsequently awful "Alliance to end Hulkamania" program that culminated with triple cage match at Uncensored.

Starrcade '97 was when the facade of WCW completely fell apart. I've been watching the build up to the show on the WWE On-Demand service and even as far back as a month or 2 away from the event the cracks started showing in the booking. They spent 18 months building and building that match up and they completely blew it. I don't know if they got nervous, they choked, or they just got plain lucky for 16 of those months but the closer they got to the event the worse the booking was. Aside from maybe the Invasion I don't think anything has been as horribly botched and fucked up as Starrcade '97.

Sting should've not only gone over clean as a sheet he should've fucking destroyed Hogan. The way they booked and structured that match was completely lunacy.

Nash beating Goldberg wasn't that horrible, he had to lose sometime. It was the Fingerpoke of Doom that followed that which was the real problem.

I did find this on wiki though and found it hilarious "In his autobiography, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Hulk Hogan rejected the idea that the Fingerpoke of Doom was pivotal in WCW's fall. He claimed that "watering down the whole concept" of the New World Order by splitting the group and creating spinoffs such as the Latino World Order"

Yes, grouping all the Luchadors together as an undercard stable helped kill the promotion.

Halloween Havoc wasn't that horrible at the very least it had Flair turning on Sting, which was great.

So wait, if it's not okay to write fan letters to porn stars, is it okay to write fan letters to Anna Kendrick? I'm asking for a friend.

Only if you sacrifice yourself on a cross of unprotected chair shots and elbows to the cold, unforgiving cement floor.  That seemingly puts you above reproach.

What exactly is wrong with communicating with a porn star? You do realize they're people too, right? The way I see it, this is less about Foley's issues and a whole lot more about yours.

I find it strange that a full grown man is writing fan mail to a porn star.  To answer Jae's question seriously, yes I'd find a full grown man sending fan mail to Anna Kendrick strange too.  I get admiring someone's work, I get being a fan.  I'm a fan of a lot of people (Foley would probably top my favorite wrestler list if that matters), but I wouldn't write them fan mail.  I wouldn't ask the biggest celebrity in the world for an autograph if I saw him/her on the street either.  Nor would I approach them, try to strike up a conversation, or give them a hearty thumbs up.  So in that way it certainly is my issue.

I do find it sort of bizarre that within this community if someone makes a seemingly harmless comment on a diva/female wrestler being attractive it  immediately brings out the creepy police to shout him down.  Yet when Foley's obsessions (and as we've discussed he has them about lots of things, but women seem to be a constant) with porn stars and divas are discussed and some of us say "Yeah, it's kinda creepy" people rush out of the wood work to call us hateful and ignorant and make claims that we hate sex workers.

I don't hate Mick Foley, I love the crazy bastard.  If writing letters to porn stars makes him happy, and his wife is on board, then God bless and keep it up. If I find it creepy who really gives a fuck?  I'm some nobody writing about actual important people on a message board.  My opinion is less than nothing.   I also don't hate sex workers.  I hate much about the industry they work in and the fact that many of them are chewed up and destroyed by it.  Which in turn makes me feel guilty for consuming product from said industry.  But I guess that's the sort of guilt we wrestling fans are used to anyhow.

I always thought those people were repressed closet cases.

I think the creepy police thing is due to the fact that we have all met wrestling fans in real life that are basically the creepiest most awful dudes. On a message board, where everyone is inherently anonymous, we naturally assume that a poster is a creeper even if what they said would be borderline normal had the conversation been face to face.

I don't quite understand why wrestling fans are stereotyped as the creepiest and most pathetic people in the world. Yes, I have been to some indy events and met all kinds of dudes that I thought were a little strange but I've also been to a hundred WWE events where I see families and I guess what would be categorized as "normal looking" people as well. Wrestling attracts all kinds just like any form of entertainment.

Ever been to an NFL game? I honestly cannot tell the difference between some of the people there and people you would see at a wrestling event. The one thing I never read about is someone being stabbed in the parking lot after leaving a WWE show..

In my secret other life, I'm a writer and musician, and I can tell you fan mail is one of the best parts of the "job" (scare quotes because I don't make a living at either.) It's much more meaningful than "you sold x copies of your book in the last three months."

I wish more people sent fan mail to people whose work they enjoyed, whether it be music, literature, or pornography.

Wrestling fans stereotype each other as the creepiest and most pathetic people in the world. It never ceases to amaze me how wrestling fans hate and shit on wrestling fans more than anyone else does. Then they get outraged when someone like Cowherd calls all of us booger eating morons. We need unity God dammit.

Some people still can't get over the idea that if you like wrestling you're getting "duped" somehow.  It's like some guys are still so proud of knowing that it's worked, and they can't have a more nuanced take on anything than "real and fake."

So, it's become a convenient thing to look down on.  If you like it, there's something gullibe (read: childish) about you.  It's similar to people who look down on people who watch anime (cartoons????) or comic books (like, for kids??????).

But, if Corporate Content Corp. makes one into a "real movie" now it's super fucking badass!!!!! IRON MAN WHOOOOOOOOO!

As if any wrestling company ever has worked an entire city like Loria worked Miami or Georgia Frontier worked St. Louis or Las Vegas Coporate Casino Inc. worked every sad dying town that decided a casino would bring more money into their economy instead of just siphoning what's left of their money into some Camen Islands umbrella company...or...(you can all probably extend this list to the end of time for "legit' sports)...But, hey...at least they're not like tricking you with childish tricks and blood capsules and stuff!

It's like the big grifters love you to be savvy to the small ones...that way you think you're real smart, doncha!

I don't want to cast too many stones at Mick, simply because one of my very closest friends in the world had an "adult" website, and I met her through that years ago.  By no means does that fact have any bearing on our relationship now, but the world takes all kinds.

The double turn would have made sense, given how en vogue it was at the time, how popular the NWO was, and hindsight showing that most of the key players end up turning within 12 months after any way.

Keep the slightly screwy finish, have Sting win, but then go "too far" in taking out his frustrations on Hogan post-match, putting him out, before Bret puts a halt to it.

The dynamic of whose side is Bret on is probably better with a face NWO, and a WCW who may not be perfect, but to begin with at least, had their hand forced by the actions of the NWO over the past few years, which ends up being a slow build toward Sting vs. Bret at Starrcade the next year.
