2016-2017 NCAA BASKETBALL THREAD

Dwayne "Pearl" Washington from Syracuse passed away today.  Apparently from a brain tumor he was diagnosed with last year.  Anyone who remembers Big East basketball when it was the best conference in any college sports knows how incredible he was.   :(

The University of Albany has cancelled their game at Duke.

The state of NY has banned all state-sponsored travel to North Carolina due to the anti-LGBT HB2 law, so this is the fallout of that.

A) HB2 is a dumb law

B) However I would laugh if NC responded by banning state travel to NYS on the grounds that 95% of the NYS government belongs in jail for corruption.

GW is firing Mike Lonergan per USA Today and Andy Katz

Remember he is under investigation for being emotionally and verbally abusive to players

Thank god the NFL is in season or the Junkies would be whining about it Monday for the entire show.

Season starts tomorrow. Outside of Arizona-Michigan State and IU/Kansas in Hawaii, there's not a ton of interesting games this weekend; much of the real good stuff's being saved for the 24-Hour Marathon next week. Tournament darling "Stone Cold" Stephen F. Austin plays Kentucky, but new coach and no Thomas Walkup means a 50-point UK win.

However, Chattanooga might be able to beat Tennessee. Georgia-Clemson could both be bubble teams this season. Harvard plays Stanford in China, which is...something.

EDIT TO ADD: Nevada plays at Saint Mary's. SMC has everyone back from a team that should have been in the Tournament last year. Nevada might be a spoiler in the Mountain West this season. Should be another fun one.

I'll be at Wisconsin/Central Arkansas tonight.  Hopefully it goes better than last year's home opener.

The team did not look inspiring in the exhibition last week.  None of the starters could hit an outside shot and they missed a ton of gimmes at the rim.  The bench looked a little better, Iverson has really improved his game on both ends and Van Vliet is intriguing, but definitely not there yet.

Welp, Lorenzo Romar hot-seat rating already cranked up to a 10. You can't give up 98 at home to Yale.

The two games in Hawaii were fantastic. Arizona-Michigan State went back and forth the whole way and ended on a buzzer-beater, Indiana-Kansas went to overtime. The latter game had a lot of bad officiating, though. Sorta took away from it a bit, especially compared to MSU-Zona, which had a good flow. Really impressed with James Blackmon Jr.

Better or worse than giving up 103 to Western Washington?

Ha! I tend to not put too much stock in exhibitions, since Le Moyne beat Syracuse one year it was a 1-seed, and I think Grand Valley beat Michigan State for one of Izzo's hundreds of deep Tournament runs. In this case, however, the exhibition gave real insight into Washington basketball

Connecticut loses at home to Northeastern, and Temple loses at home to New Hampshire. Bad night for the American.

Cincy coming back from a slow start against Albany spared the American even more humiliation. Yikes.

UConn has a bunch of big games left on its schedule, and can easily fix this with some wins. But man, this might be record time for a preseason Top 25 becoming a must-win-its-conference-to-get-in team
