Wrestling With the Past Podcast

Recommended Posts

My buddy Charles from prowrestlingonly.com and I started a new podcast. We'll discuss the yearbooks, do wrestler comparisons, have guests, and bring up topics that pop up on the board. So, #1 is in the bag....

"Will & Charles are joined by Childs Walker, sports writer for the Baltimore Sun, discussing the best (and worst) 1990 had to offer in the world of wrestling. They reflect on the demise of the indies as several promotions die while USWA is able to survive. We travel to Mexico and talk about EMLL’s amazing year, maybe the best any company has ever produced in the ring. We go to Japan as new companies are formed and AJPW & NJPW start to push new wrestlers as old wrestlers fade. Finally, they discuss the major highlights and low points of the NWA and WWF. So much content in 2 hours!"

In the second edition of Wrestling with the Past, Will and Charles look at the history of the NWA/WCW World Television Title. We begin with Dusty Rhodes’ reign in 1985 and work our way through until the bitter end. We discuss the greatness of Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson, the ascension of Steve Austin, the amazing matches of William Regal and the tragedy of Rick Martel’s comeback. Oh! And Charles makes the case on why you should give Alex Wright a second chance. All this and much more. Enjoy!

These shows are fantastic, keep up the great work. If the belt history becomes a path you guys are going down, a WCW Cruiserweight or the World Class TV title lineage would make for fascinating radio. Or, if you felt like spending six hours talking, you could just read verbatim a list of every USWA tag title change.

That Hansen/Colon match you guys talked about lives up to the hype. Christ, that was great. The crowd is just bonkers and they beat the shit out of one another. I thought the finish was a bit anticlimactic, but I was blown away otherwise.

Will & Charles are joined by Childs Walker to discuss 1991. First, we’ll pay a visit to Memphis where we see the emergence of JC Ice, the Texas vs. Tennessee feud, Eddie Gilbert, Terry Funk, a brief Fabulous Ones reunion and a great in-ring year for Jeff Jarrett. We’ll discuss the top matches and wrestlers in Mexico and Japan with plenty of discussion on the Brazos, Misawa, Kawada, the Three Musketeers and Jushin Liger. Will & Charles have a healthy debate on the merits of joshi as a style and as a form of entertainment. Back in WCW, we discuss the York Foundation, Wargames, Ric Flair leaving and the Dangerous Alliance. Finally, we pay a visit to the WWF with discussions on the Hogan-Slaughter feud, Savage vs. Warrior from Wrestlemania, the great face AND heel runs of Jake the Snake and the debuts of Ric Flair & The Undertaker. An action-packed three hours of discussion.

You know what I dig about these shows? People actually defend their opinions and the debate isn't about who can shout more loudly. Enjoyed the joshi conversation a lot and want to watch the crap out of some 91 USWA...
