stro
The thing that's throwing me off isn't how old everyone looks, but how old everyone's voice sounds. Except Skinner. That white don't blight.
steve
I gave in and downloaded the pilot last night as I've not heard if anywhere in the UK is showing it. Bloody hell, talk about a frantic pace, the whole episode was a mile a minute and I wish they'd just done an extended opening episode so it had had time to breathe. Totally rolled my eyes at Mulder going balls deep on the new conspiracy after one woman speaking out, if I was him I'd think that that was a distraction from the real conspiracy. But yeah, the retcon of conspiracy away from super soldiers and faceless aliens setting everyone on fire is definitely a good thing and rewinds to the way the mythos seemed to be going in season 4/5 It was okay I guess, but yeah talk about cramming. Is an episode a night on this week? I thought it'd be weekly The first two eps were on back-to-back nights, but the remaining ones will be weekly on Monday nights. Swift
The biggest revelation for me was that the FBI have finally started buying brighter bulbs than 40W and Skinner can now see all four corners of his office.
Web Conn
I'm currently on season 6 and it clearly becoming a different show. Less Mythology and more Monster of the Week. Plus the one offs are more focused heavy and more well known guest stars too. Still a good show just seems less dark then the last five seasons. TheVileOne
I think season 6 was when they started filming the show in LA instead of Vancouver to accommodate David Duchovny so that's probably one reason it started looking different.
Craig H
I really dug the first two episodes and actually liked the first more than the second, but I was always way into the mythology. I also didn't come away from that thinking all of the alien stuff wasn't real. I still think it was all very real and the aliens are still players, but the illuminati have been using them as pawns too.

And it started having a lot more comedy around that time, too.
Jiji
I'm going through the entire run and the one-liners pick up quite a bit near the end of season three. Almost all from Mulder and it seems like something Duchovny would push for. Maybe the strong responses to episodes like Jose Chung's "From Outer Space" and War of the Coprophages made it easier for them to make that change in tone. Holy fuck, I forgot how brutal Home is. THEY BE CLUBBERING, TONY!
pipGofern
Yeah, I noticed that too. The show was too procedural-y and stiff in S1, almost like L&O with Monsters. S2 is when the humor and quirkiness started coming out more. But S3 is when DD and Anderson really seemed to get a hold of their characters. Syzygy - the one where the teen girls go all Carrie and kill Ryan Reynolds - was non-stop hilarity. Scully's deadpan "I doubt she's even a blonde" is one of my favorite lines in the entire series. She had really underrated comedic timing. What's really odd to notice in retrospect - given Duchovny's supposed battle with sex/porn addiction - is all the hints they dropped about Mulder being a porn aficionado. He makes references to "my tape collection" in several episodes and I think there's a couple instances where they infer he's been calling phone sex hotlines. Well if you've ever seen Duchovny on Californication he obviously has no issue playing up this side of his image.
TheVileOne
Were they even hinting by the end? I remember one episode where Mulder body swaps with Mike McKean and he goes to his home and he just sits in his living room watching the Spice channel or whatever at night with a goofy small on his face as he kicks back. I also remember that being a hilarious episode as McKean in Mulder's body tries to seduce Scully and also cleans up Mulder's bedroom.

I don't recall them being all that subtle about Mulder's porn habit. I was actually surprised when pipGofern said they were "hinting" at it. Actually, thinking about Duchovny's "sex addiction", I remember reading an interview with Duchovny conducted early in the show's run where he said he became an actor to get the kind of women (I think he actually said "chicks', lol) English Lit majors couldn't get. Wonder how that's working out for him? (Admittedly, being married to Tea Leoni for 17 years is a damn good accomplishment.)

Jiji
Absolutely. I loved all of the references, from the red speedo ("nice 'n tighty!") to Kolchak.
Technico Support
I'll disagree but I never liked it when X-Files got too cutesy. There's a difference between inserting humor into a show and just going all out wacky~! and this, to me, was dog shit. We only have six episodes, Mulder just learned about a new conspiracy, and hey, let's forget all that and go with a full-on sitcom episode. Ugh. I liked the shout out to Kim Manners, though.
steve
I'd agree with you if they were like, "THIS. IS. IT." But you know they want to leave the door open for the possibility of more, so nothing will really get paid off anyway.
stro
X-Files is like...THE SHOW for not paying anything off. They did 9 seasons of not paying things off, and even when things got wrapped up or explained, they still were fairly open ended and not satisfying. EVA
Somebody needs to convince Disney to do the thing where they pay the creator of a thing a bunch of money to fuck off for the X-Files. The previous two episodes were tremendous and showed there was a still a lot of good stuff to be mined from the show...And then Chris Carter showed back up and it went to shit again. Tonight's episode was a mess.
BurningBeard
Sorry folks, but two episodes in and I don't think the X-Files is right in a post-Fringe world. It seems so out of place/out of time

Swift
What a terrible piece of shit that episode was. When we were shown a young Muslim guy praying, I thought to myself "Isn't it terrible that the media and entertainment world has conditioned us to immediately think 'terrorist'. I'm sure The X-Files is going to mess with those preconceptions" Nope! It devolved into the usual "all Muslims are terrorists" bullshit. The opening genuinely made me angry. I can't imagine being a Muslim sitting at home watching TV and film where the only representation of your culture is as evil jihadis. And then we got a godawful attempt at comedy. Carter must've been on some shrooms himself when he wrote this stuff, because who else would honestly think "You know what we need in this episode about terrorism? Mulder linedancing!" This whole comeback has been a bit of a letdown honestly. Some cute moments, but the overly comedic tone has been grating. I've always thought of Bones as being a more comedic descendant of The X-Files, but this season has been The X-Files doing Bones doing The X-Files, right down to the plinky plonky quirky score that dominates scenes. Technico Support
I gave up about 2 minutes into the second monster of the week episode. The show just wasn't treading any new ground. Bring back the X Files and just do the same shit you did 20 years ago? No thanks. Honestly, we can go back and watch DVDs/streams/torrents of the original show if you're not going to do anything different or interesting.
Craig H
If it was the second monster of the week episode, then that would be episode 3. I'm sorry you missed one of the best episodes in the whole run of X-Files.
