WWE 2016 Hall of Fame

It kind of suppresses discussion though, doesn't it, RIPPA? While clearly they could put the Pretty Mean Sisters in as a unit and all they have to do is say so, they seem to want to keep at least an illusion of prestige to the Hall (conspicuous absence of Thesz and Rude aside).

There is a difference in "I think this are the people who they will put and and "they aren't worthy of the WWE HOF"

There is plenty of discussion around say Matt's very valid point of what the reaction to putting in the Godfather would be.

There is plenty of discussion around say Vickie Guerrero should be the Texas/Ladies pick OVER Jackie

To just look at the list an be all "these people shouldn't be in the HOF" is folly (that is my generalizing - not saying someone specifically said that)

Brock shouldn't be in the WON Hall of Fame?

Now you are just being a silly goose

Brock and Sable are going in as a package deal.

You would have assumed it was going to be next year since the original plan was Minnesota

But since they hate Minnesota now - who knows

Look up Chyna on the Opie and Jimmy show from last year and then see if you think that's someone you'd trust to put out in front of the public.

And Matt, the chasm between fake pimp and gonzo porn where a Mean Gene look alike is making a Pollock painting on someone's face is gigantic.

I'm not entirely saying it's not.

I just think if they announce Wright, there'll be the sort of backlash that WWE does not want. We're in a different world. The fanbase is different. WWE created their own monster in some ways by garnering all of those social media awards and prioritizing all the charity work.

Matt you need to be accepting of non mainstream religions.

I was going to bring up the potential racism in the Shango gimmick and how that could be received but decided that I didn't even need to go that far, because, you know, pimp.

Shango scared the hell out of me as a kid though.

It's funny, if Wright ONLY had the Shango gimmick and never had Kama/Godfather/Goodfather, I actually think he'd be a better, more appropriate candidate than with the fuller resume. Such is the way the WWE HOF works.

One of my favorite posts that I ever have read on this board is the one where some guy was talking about playing with his action figures as a kid and his Wolverine was unstoppable except for when he'd run up against his Jakks Papa Shango, who was basically like the Galactus of all his toys.

Shango was way over with the nine- and ten-year-olds in my school. That's one of those gimmicks, much like the Wild West Zombie Undertaker gimmick, that is conceptually silly, but was executed perfectly in practice.

A friend of mine growing up, who was a casual fan at best, absolutely loved Shango. The Shango Hasbro figure wasn't just the only wrestling figure he owned, it was the only action figure period.

Papa Shango was awesome. I wish they had the courage to keep it going like they did with Taker. Shango and Taker could have been an epic, career spanning rivalry for 8-10 years.

The Papa Shango character was fucked when he missed his cue and ran out late during Hogan/Sid @ WMVIII. I could just picture Vince losing his shit backstage.

Wondering if anyone has made the "sure so-and-so should be in it because they put the limo driver in the HOF" crack yet?

Preemptively:

McMahon later increased Dudley's responsibilities with the company several times, and eventually assigned him to manage Turner's Arena in Washington, D.C., which made Dudley the first African-American to hold such a position in the United States.[2][3] His role required him to oversee several other events, including the Town and Country Jamboree television show.[3]
Dudley has been described as an "important cog" in the company, and McMahon once stated that "had there been no James Dudley, the WWF possibly wouldn't exist as it does today".[3]

The guy who was most critical of Dudley going in back in 94 was Meltzer. I don't think he's ever backpeddled on that either.

"The joke is Dudley, who is being called "former manager extraordinare" on television. I'm not sure Dudley ever managed, but if he did it would have been so briefly it almost doesn't count. Dudley was actually Vince McMahon Sr's limo driver."

Matt Farmer, who I think most people would consider a pretty decent historian when it comes to this stuff, even if occasionally a little close to things, said this back in 2011 on wrestling classics:

"Bobo was already a star when he came to work for Vince, and it was Buddy Rogers more than anyone who was instrumental in getting Bobo over. Dudley was a very, very small time "Manager" and didn't work the road. Dudley was a friend of Vince Sr and Vince put him in charge or running the day to day operation of the Turner Arena in Washington DC. He got in because he was close with Vince Sr, and Junior took care of him at his fathers request. Nothing more nothing less."

I'd suggest people check out the WON HOF episode of Wrestling Culture from last year for discussions of Meltzer and race, because I don't really want to go there, but I think there are better sources to trust than Wikipedia or WWE PR when it comes to Dudley.

Does anybody think Rick Martel shouldn't be in? AWA champ, many times a tag champ, TV champ during that great 1997 comeback, great character/gimmick, and always good in the ring. Seems to have as good of a resume as many guys that are already in.

I would put him in this year and let Tyler Breeze induct him (or Tito or Garea).
