2016 LUCHA UNDERGROUND DISCUSSION

RIPPA

Laughed out loud at the "Circles with circles, Willie" line from Cueto. That was fantastic.

Vamp morphing in to Uncle Fester at the end caught me off-guard. Sounds like physical therapists have a new tool in the fight against paraplegia though... just beat the piss out of someone until they get feeling back.

I'd call it a nothing episode because I want 0 out of 0 Chavos on LU, and all that episode did was make Cage look dumb, but I did like the crowd clapping the Terminator theme when Cage was smashing people.

And what made the ending of the 7 way look worse? Having the 4 way before it end in similar give away the win fashion. Really, what was the point in Kobra Moon acting that way?

Moth's attack on Killshot, that's gotta be just to set up a midcard match for Ultima Lucha 2.

Someone please tell me that Famous B actually winds up with a client that wins matches. I'll take a Season 3 spoiler PM from anyone who can convince me that plot's going anywhere.

Really the best thing I can take away out of it is a better appreciation for the last time I went to a physical therapist. Mile on a treadmill sure seems better than getting Lucille'd by The Cool Ghoul, Dick Von Hoene.

Looks like we are getting a storyline with Daga and Kobra Moon.

I too don't want to see Chavo with the belt but I have faith there's a reason. Plus this week Cage will try to murder him for us.

Many years ago people hitting the seats/steps to try to match Punk's AFI theme by happy accident turned into the Terminator theme.

They could've sped up the medallion placement ceremony by have the first six come in all at once. And then en masse they step out and just let Cage beat up Chavo right there and then. They respect Cage winning his medallion match earlier, and then just face him fair and square in the 7 way.

I don't care for Chavo, but if it leads to Cage beating the piss out of him I'm okay with that.  Either Chavo will lose that match or win and get his ass kicked by Matanza.  As long as the result's the same, I'm in.

I didn't understand the "Circles within Circles" line but Cueto also snuck in "return of the Mack" which was great.  He also made me LOL with "ooooooh spooooky" when Sineistro left the ring.

Pretty sure it was a sarcastic way of saying that Mack is an idiot who barely knows how to match shapes like a 3 year old would.

Overall that might be the worst episode of LU since the first 3 weeks of season 1.

Why did they run a 4-way clusterfuck on the same show as a 7-way clusterfuck? And with almost the same ending?

Killshot/Moth was decent, but the feud setup is super lazy.

The GotG match was supposed to make Cage look smart, but they could've done it better. No reason for him to kill everyone else in the match, and they could've gotten some mileage out of Cage daring Chavo to step up to Matanza while he waits for the arbitrary no-challenge defense to kick in. Instead they just keep making up the rules as they go along with that belt.

I did like Dario doing his Jericho Slamboree 98 tribute for the opening ceremony, though. "Is it Trece? Barrio Negro? Oh, it's Sinestro de la Muerte. Ooh, spooky!"

Finally, that Pentagon/Vampiro German dungeon porn segment had to be one of the more fucked up segments in wrestling history. I'll give LU a tentative pass since the artistic license they've taken has produced more hits than misses thus far, but still... No more of that please.

If Cage's end goal was to get a match with Matanza, he could've just bullied Dario into giving him one like Pentagon Jr. did. Him giving Chavo the win did nothing for his character but make 6 fresh enemies.

...Why would Chavo want to challenge Matanza? The belt does not work like Money in the Bank where you can cash it in at any time. So he is guaranteed a match with an unstoppable beast who will most likely be 100%. He can't lie, cheat, or steal his way to victory because nothing he can throw at Matanza will ever be convincing enough for a 1-2-3.

I love all the midcard feuds. They actually put some effort into them unlike WWE. I wish Killshot would bulk up or something. Do some fucking squats, you chickenlegged bastard.

Fuck those cheating ass gringos. I have not seen so many low blows in a match. Holy shit. The writing for this show always surprises me because I did not expect Rey and company to drop the titles so soon. I guess they eventually have to get back to the avenging Dragon Azteca plotline, but fuck man.

That definitely caught me off-guard.  I was expecting the dream team to be holding onto the belts at least until the end of the season.  If they won last night it would have fit the "overcome all odds" theme they could run with.  But I like Team Douchebag and am curious to see where they go from here.

The DVR says the Trios titles will be defended this week.

I'm gonna say that Cage destroying everyone else in the 7-person match last week was so he wouldn't look like he was just taking a shortcut this week.  Yes, he only had to beat one person to win the title when all the other medallion holders would've had to beat six others, but he basically beat everyone in the 7-person match too.

After the disappointing show last week, this week LU comes back firing on all cylinders. Every segment and match clicked perfectly.

Ryan and Mascarita had a nice comedy match, with Famous B nailing his role as a sleazy conman. The part where he distracted the ref by handing him a card was great. The failed press slam spot and the spot where they incorporated Joey's dick strength were funny too. Easily Joey's best work in LU since comedy's his forte, and it's probably the best use for Mascarita too.

Cage and Chavo had a solid match too that played to both guys' strengths. Cage is awesome as a no-selling wrecking ball, and Chavo got enough crafty counters in to make Cage look like a beast. Probably Chavo's best match in LU, but Cage is probably the most underrated guy on the roster. Every time he gets a chance, he knocks it out of the park. I'm very interested to see how he meshes with Matanza next week.

The backstage segment with Mundo, Evans, and PJ was vintage LU. Loved it, especially with the ridiculous air guitar stuff at the end. Mundo and Evans is such a natural pairing. Been waiting for those two to join up since last season.

Also good to see the Cortez/Joey UC angle finally going somewhere. I was a little sad for Cisco at the end there.

The main event was excellent and one of the top matches of the season. LU definitely has lots of "shades of grey" characters, so this pure babyface vs. pure heel match stuck out in a good way, and boy did they hammer that dynamic home with the finish. Lots of nice, smooth, and creative move sequences as you'd expect. That 'Rana-into-a-'rana spot Evans, Puma, and PJ did was nuts. Also loved the psychology of Mundo countering moves with his core strength since they always make a big deal about his abs and his workouts. The finishing stretch was really good, starting with the psych-out of the ref-pull on the face team's usual finishing sequence. Then the absurd amount ball shots and eye pokes mixed with the over-the-top high-impact in quick succession was an incredible sequence. Yeah, it probably should've ended on the Starship Pain, but there was huge pop for the babyface final hope spot, only to be cutoff by more over-the-top cheating, so it still worked pretty well. Really good work from all 6 guys.

Skipped last week after everyone's responses on here so this is the catch-up.

Voodoo Glow Skulls? Cool!

Joey Ryan offering his pube-covered lollypop to B's valet is just gross. Now that Torito's been released, can we get a Mascarita vs. Mascarita feud? The throwback to that Dino match that went viral when Mascarita kicked Joey in the junk was inspired.

Cage/Chavo was way too even and the pace felt disjointed. I would have preferred Chavo just trying to run away from Cage before getting caught and just eating a series of power moves and finishers.

Hey Joey, you need a warrant. I guess he could get Cisco for B&E but technically that's what he was doing too.

Team Douchebag are a great trio. The spot with Mundo wearing Rey on his shoulders all the way outside, then taking a headscissors into the apron, then Azteca Jr. hilo'ing to the outside just to do the same thing was flat-out awesome. Rey's athleticism after all these years and injuries mystifies me. I wonder if him and Morrison had any matches in the 'E (likely about a thousand I don't remember)? It's too bad the ending was so ridiculous; I agree that the nutshots should have finished it. This is lucha man, have some respect for tradition. Johnny's response to winning followed by Jack running all the way around the ring and playing air guitar with the belt, then the pan to the fans' reactions, is hilarious though.
