Another interim title?  What is this garbage?  Is it being interim really going to keep Nurmagomedov from quitting?

Supposedly, Conor might not be coming back until late summer at the earliest.

Also, an interim title might not be on the line. This is all just from Khabib's side basically. No one else believes it's a done deal just yet. Ferguson hasn't signed off on it yet. So this could all be posturing from Khabib.

Even if it's late summer, an interim title is asinine. Just call it what it is, a title eliminator.  When did making title eliminators main events suddenly become taboo?

They want title fights on PPV and keep the top of the division active. Right now, they don't know when McGregor is coming back. They ain't putting the division on the sidelines until he comes back.  The winner of that fight (if it is in March) is probably fighting in June/July. If McGregor isn't back by then, said winner will probably defend their interim belt then with that winner probably facing McGregor in October or November. Going a year between LW title fights is not exactly the best option because they don't need a backlog of contenders. When one person decides to sit out and wait for a title shot, 2 or 3 other people want to sit out as well for that exact reason.

McGregor's not injured.  They stripped him of one title.  Sit down with him and make a deal and get a target date.

A deal for what? That's not really an option. He's going to come back when he feels like it. He's already got enough money. He plans on waiting on the birth of his first child, spend time with his family, and taking on other opportunities outside of fighting. There is no set timetable other than perhaps before the end of 2017. The thing is, as champion, the division revolves around him. Right now, Khabib and Tony (and other fighters assuredly once the division goes forward at the top of the year) aren't willing to fight in marquees bouts UNLESS it's for a title. The UFC isn't going to let Conor AND Khabib & Tony Ferguson sit out for 3/4 of the calendar year. If the only viable option is for an interim title, that's the option they're going to take.

Yeah -- all these interim titles, with Conor being the elephant in the room that looms over them, pawing at Mayweather over social media. Does he get past Khabib or Ferguson? I dont know. Would be surprised to see them feed the golden goose to either of them, esp. with Ronda also potentially on the way out.

Then just book McGregor against one of those guys and go from there.

He isn't coming back to face one of those dudes. That's the whole point. Neither of those fights is significantly bigger than the other. Have you been paying attention? They're not going to have both of those guys sit out until October or November and then have the person they didn't pick for Conor sit out for even longer. If they're both healthy, they are choosing to have them fight. You're talking about making a deal with Conor when actuality they have to make a deal with both Khabib and Tony. They already agreed to letting Conor have time off.

Then you might as well just strip the lightweight title off of him as well and end this nonsense, if we are already talking about a new interim title.

McGregor is the legitimate champ...and you know also the biggest draw in all of combat sports right now.  There is 0.00000000001% he gets stripped of the LW title.  Keep in mind, part of their agreement was that upon giving up the FW belt that he got to keep the LW title if he beat Alvarez. He beat Alvarez soundly with no controversy. More importantly, he made the UFC tons of money. So right now, their plan is the keep things between the UFC and McGregor civilized and diplomatic unlike last spring. Plus, they have no intentions of burning out Conor like they did with Rousey.

Also, keep in mind folks that the interim title isn't finalized. There might not be one for all we know. Personally, I would like UFC to talk both (or maybe just Khabib) off the interim title ledge if they can.

elsal, do you have some insight on UFC behind-the-scenes that we don't?  Because it seems like things were being kept civil at all when he was stripped of the title, and McGregor earlier claimed the new owners have never met with him at all.

A lot of what McGregor is bluster. They're going to let him beat his chest without exposing the gimmick. Getting a boxing license in California (why would he fight in California let alone box in California? Think about it.). Saying this and that. All bluster. Everything he does, they still have to sign off on.

I mean he clearly agreed to give the FW title up to hold the LW title. Whatever happens in front of the cameras is a different story. Look at what happened in April. Everyone was desperately trying to side with Conor and against the evil empire. Then, people figured out....Conor is about as full of shit as much as they are. Even Meltzer who is probably a little slow on the draw on certain stuff like this was able to put together that a lot of stuff Conor says doesn't add up, especially with his knowledge of different negotiations.

As much as people like to overthink stuff and feed into what McGregor does, all this stuff is basically an extension of him putting on a show.

You know how Kurt Cobain was doing interviews complaining that he didn't want to be famous and he didn't know why MTV played his videos, and at the same time complaining to his management and record label that he wasn't famous enough and MTV should be showing his videos more often? That's Conor McGregor's anti-authority gimmick all over.

We call it "the gift of blarney". The Yanks shorten it to "bullshit".

Now he's saying he wants to fight again after Christmas.  So...there's that too.

This Christmas or next Christmas? Everything scheduled past this last show in Sacramento is technically after Christmas.
