Adam
Hi guys, was hoping there'd be some sort of 'catchall' thread for pointless question so to avoid starting a new thread for something so small. I want to buy an external HD but i've never had one from anywhere. Most of the ones i've seen are USB 3.0, my PC is a few years old, would it still work with USB 1 and USB2 on my PCs and laptops? If so, anyone able to recommend a decent place to buy? I want a 2TB or 3TB one ideally, places like the big ones such as Currys and Amazon are about £60. odessasteps
My only advice is dont keep everything on one drive or have a back up. My last portable HD crapped out and i lost a ton of stuff (podcasts, music, tv shows, comics, etc). I usually buy Western Digital if all things are equal.
Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie
USB3 is backwards compatible with USB1 and 2, so you're fine there. I've used externals from both Seagate and Western Digital and had no problems. I've had some rotten luck with Toshiba drives, though.
cool arrow
I'd recommend avoiding anything Toshiba makes like gonorrhea.
Adam
Right since you're all anti-Toshiba and pro-Western Digital i'll bear that in mind, thanks guys.
TimLivingston
Always good to have repetition. WD has some cloud-based backup stuff, too. Externals are great, but also look into Google Drive (100 MB for $2/mo) for the important stuff to backup.
JazeUSA
you can get a 5tb hdd from amazon for $110 shipped, seagate, western digital & toshiba are all fine, i have over 30 hdd's & have never had any issues except once with a western digital 2tb
Adam
Would there be any issues using an external HDD from USA over here in England? Your prices are generally a ton better than ours.
Red is Dead
if you're doing that, then be very wary of power. kettle leads, adapters, the like.
Tabe
Avoid "green" drives. They aren't as durable and they're slow.
Ramo2653
Second the hate for Toshiba drives I had one crap out on me and I lost all my music files. I have a few green drives and I haven't had any speed issues but it's 6+ years old so it's probably not the "green".
Adam
Ideally I want an external HDD to run video files directly to my PC which is connected to my TV, I have hundreds of burned DVDs full of video files that i'd just love in one organised place. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1434716.htm This is the best value i've found, any thoughts on this and if it would be ideal for what I'm after? Adam
Good to know KDWI, do you play video files directly from it at all? If so has there been any issue with speed or buffering? I've just never used an external drive before.
Tabe
You won't have any trouble with that. I stream from an external drive over my network to my ps3 and ps4 systems without any issue.

Guest Stefanie Without Stefanie
Yep, it's no problem at all. Similar to Tabe, I stream from an external drive using Plex and it works great.
