Joe Lucia
By the way, today is also the three year anniversary of the Marlins/Blue Jays fire sale trade. None of the players the Blue Jays acquired are still with the team. Only three (four if Mathis re-signs) of the players the Marlins got are still with them. Tabe
Tigers acquire K-RodA few years too late. Actually, he's been under the radar solid most of the last few years. He should do fine in theory. That was a reference to the Tigers needing a good closer a couple years ago and not getting one, not a comment on whether he's still good. The Man Known as Dan
There are starting to be rumors that Jose Fernandez is likely to be traded this off-season. Which, holy shit, he's gonna get a kings ransom and the Marlins are such a terrible organization. And the rumors are apparently because some reporters are drawing conclusions from the "attitude" of a 23 year old kid who knows he's one of the best pitchers in baseball acting like a 23 year old kid who knows he's one of the best pitchers in baseball. Why in the world would Miami trade away a top 5 pitcher that they have under price control for the next 3 years. Cause Marlins?

grilledcheese
How many more years of this kind of play before we can start seriously talking about him as one of, if not the finest talent the game has ever seen? He's what, 23? I am so fucking stoked that I get to watch this guy for another 17 or 18 years potentially. What an amazing young man.

Also, now there are reports that he has requested a trade multiple times. So yeah, that too.

Realistically, he'll only get better from here on barring injuries and peak around 28-32 and probably with his skills stay productive well into his late 30s in terms of contact and pitch selection. BrianS81177
Mariners DFA 2011 #2 overall selection Danny Hultzen. Is this the biggest bust in recent draft history? I ask because he was added to the 40 man roster right away but has never appeared in a major league game. In fact he's logged under 170 innings pitched in the minors total since they drafted him. The Man Known as Dan
Mariners DFA 2011 #2 overall selection Danny Hultzen. Is this the biggest bust in recent draft history? He's a pitcher who has gotten hurt a ton, but has hit the majors. Cubs took Josh Vitters 3rd overall in 2007. He got to the majors for about 100 PA's and hit .125 and struck out a third of the time. Jeff Clement went 3rd overall in 2005, and... yeah. Rockies decided against taking Evan Longoria 2nd overall in order to draft Greg Reynolds 2nd overall in 06. But really, the answer is Donavan Tate going 3rd overall in 09 with a 6.25 mill signing bonus. Also, keep your eyes on "Marlins selecting Tyler Kolek 2nd overall in 2014" for a future call. That one felt silly when it took place, and it looks even worse with Rodon and Schwarber (the next 2 picks) already in the bigs and contributing. He's a pitcher who has gotten hurt a ton, but has hit the majors. Hultzen never made it to the majors He's also not done yet. He's not a guy who got to the minors and fell off a cliff. The only time he's had an ERA above 3.3 was when he was a 22 year old pitching in Triple A. Now is he the same guy who trashed Double A to a 1.19 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 75 innings in 2012? No, I imagine he's not. But hum emerging as a decent MLB reliever isn't out of the question yet. And he's also not really a strong "worst pick ever" candidate because all of his problems have been injury related as opposed to "head case" or the even worse "Just stopped being good"
Death From Above
Brian Taylor says hi. Joe Lucia
Taylor actually had a pretty good debut season in high-A after getting drafted and was a three-time top 20 prospect in baseball before the bar fight. And then...there's Matt Bush. Never was a top 100 prospect (which seems improbable for a #1 overall pick. Played 259 games as a hitter in the minors before converting to the mound, where he only threw 71 2/3 innings. Got into a bar fight immediately after being drafted. Broke his ankle. Blew his elbow out. Beat the shit out of two teenagers with a golf club. Threw a baseball at a woman and assaulted her. Got a DUI and nearly killed a guy. Just got released from jail last month. ...and all because the Padres were cheap and didn't want to deal with Scott Boras.

He's got a better chance of making the majors than, say, ME, but he's in his prime years and having to start over, probably at AA. Kid's probably done.
