AUGUST 2015 MOVIE THREAD

Why are you people wasting money on that atrocity?

If I had to pay to see that, yeah I wouldn't be seeing it. The person I went with wanted to see Pixels, and I wanted to see Rogue Nation. So I decided to take the bullet on this one as long as they paid for it.

Went to a special screening of Dragonball Z: Resurrection F. One of the most fun times I've had, being in a theater full of fellow fans and cheering, laughing, ooh and aah at all the hard punches. I enjoyed it, definitely a movie for the fans. And it was cool to see the others get to shine, not just Goku and Vegeta

Watched Inherent Vice today. Man, that film is horny. Really horny. I don't know that I've ever used that adjective to describe a film (hell, a lot of porno can't even go by that though it's meant to get you off), but that one... whew. Not really what I expected but most everything in that film is not what me or anyone else might expect.

I've never been more disappointed in a movie. Went in expecting and wanting to love it. Found it pretty boring and even after watching it, could not tell you a single thing that happened.

I don't want to sit through it again because it's so damn long but I got some serious laughs out of it. Seeing Benicio Del Toro show up as another lawyer in another stoner flick was nice and the scene in the restaurant with him and Joaquin had me rolling trying to figure out just what they ordered.

Went to see Pixels over the weekend.  Ugh.  Adam Sandler may be the only force on earth that could make me hate 80's video games.

Saw this yesterday. It's up there for one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Whoever wrote the script should die in a house fire.

You're a good friend.

Paul Thomas Anderson used to be one of my favorite directors, but man, he is someone that really needs to be reigned in during the editing process.  His films seem to be getting more and more scattered.  I definitely think there was a good movie somewhere in there, but what IS there is a mess.

Re-watched The Wolf of Wall Street and it was good, but not great. I really wish they gave more time to Kyle Chandler, but the depravity of everything in that office was enthralling. It's not as re-watchable as the other Scorsese movies, but I think it's definitely a fine piece of film.

Interested on how you felt about Belfort and co on rewatch.

Most people I spoke to came away from the first viewing thinking he was amazing, wishing they had the life etc but on re-watching they start to see him in a more cynical/pathetic light.

It's a really interesting piece to go back over and see how differently you feel.

I'm pissed off at people who just want to get rich just for the sake of being rich in the first place so I had an inherently negative point of view, but I did try to look for more sympathetic parts the second time around. I think it was more apparent early on that there was something sympathetic about him, but once he started his own firm, I started to lose the sympathy.

Maybe I tried to look too deep into it, but I didn't see too much sympathy. He really went above and beyond by the end of the movie just to stay on top. It was all ego, and I can see why some would find him sympathetic, but I didn't.

I'm watching Popeye(1980), and while I can see why this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, I don't understand all the hate. The set of Sweet Haven is pretty cool, the songs, while quirky, are simple and sweet and the cast is spot-on, Shelley Duvall in particular.

What really got my attention was the physical comedy. Man, they did a great job making it feel as cartoonish as possible. I think this was the first time I had ever seen Bill Irwin, and I appreciate him more as an adult.

And for the record, I still think Olive's song, "He's Large" is about Bluto' s dick. "Not a mandolin...he's an accordion"? Don't sound like she's talking about his weight...

I'd like to watch it again, with the subtitles on 'cuz i know missed dialogue in the theater that was mumbled.  I thought it was basically like 'The Big Lebowski' but not played for laughs (Though there ARE some funny parts, it was one of those movies that was weird to watch in a theater because there would be lines I would laugh out loud at, then look around and realize no one else was laughing, and others where people would be giggling and I'd be going "Wait, what was the joke there?").  Great cast, nice cinematography, and Phoenix is a lot of fun in the lead, but it was really an odd film.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll throw it in here. So they're kicking off the Dark Tower withThe Gunslinger on 1/13/17, directed by Nikolaj Arcel who also directed the swedish version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. He's also writing the screenplay. I'm with this. Now let's see who they cast. Who do you guys got? My wish list is unobtainable, but solid, with either Josh Brolin or Daniel Day Lewis as Roland and maybe a completely hulking, off his tits John Goodman as Cort.

Yep, we're chatting that up in the Upcoming Movies / Casting thread.   Sony had better not fuck that up.

Him not liking The Shining or The Breakfast Club (I read the mini reviews too) were kind of the final nail in the coffin for me. Can't pick out anything off the top of my head that he loved that was horrible but me and my (admittedly snobby) friend that works at Rentertainment had a conversation once about his opinions sucking and I guess I'm reflecting that.

He didn't direct the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. He co-wrote the screenplay. He directed A Royal Affair, which got great reviews.
