AUGUST 2015 TV THREAD!

Season 2 of Fargo looks great based on the commercials as well as the line up of actors they have. Just wondering what the general thoughts were about Season 1. I always skipped over comments regarding it since I wasn't watching it. Worth binging to get caught up before the new season starts?

Oh, and the Brink got really good. It improved progressively from one episode to the next, but the last two were outstanding.

Loving this show. It has a Catch 22 vibe to it.

"The death toll estimate is currently an unknown known, but we're working on it becoming a known unknown."

Finished watching Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp last night.

One delightful easter egg pointed out by the AV Club.

The punks who come into the liquor store that Falcon beats up? They were the actors who played the indoor kids who got shunted off to David Hyde Pierce in the movie.

I did mark out for the live song at the end, too. Second time Chris Pine's stolen the show with a song.

While I liked it all the way through, I liked Season 2/3 better than 1 (I'm torn on 4 as I've only watched it once).  I think at first they were trying for too obvious of a Sarah Palin satire, but the show gets progressively funnier the more they focus on all the wacko characters around her and ease up on Louis-Dreyfus (Who's still fantastic) a bit.

Man, I hope I'm not the only watching Comedy Central's "Review" show.  It just came back for a second season and it's still hilarious.  Andy Daly kills it.

Give it a shot, guys.  I wouldn't steer you wrong.

My brother-in-law told me about it, so I DVRed everything and am working my way through Season 1

So far, my favourite bits are him dressed as Batman and going to his

custody hearing and his ex's lawyer saying "You smell like urine" with Daly responding in his Batman voice "It's not my urine"

And absolutely everything about the trip to space

When Fred Willard gets launched into the ceiling and dies, then his corpse floats around while Lance Bass cuts sponsorship promos and then his horrified face floats in front of the camera while the man proposes to his girlfriend is as hard as I've laughed at any TV show, save Bojack Horseman, in...years probably

Has anyone seen the Australian original?

Speaking of The Wire - David Simon is back on HBO this weekend with this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8VpChKfkd8

The miniseries is an adaptation of the nonfiction book of the same name by Lisa Belkin and tells the story of Nick Wasicsko, the youngest big-city mayor in the nation who finds himself thrust into racial controversy when a federal court orders to build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of Yonkers, New York

This intrigues me, but the fact that HBO has barely promoted it makes me think it's probably shitty.  It IS directed by Paul Haggis, after all.

I really dug season 1, but the show hits it's stride in each season after. It's a little like Parks and Rec in that regard, where Parks and Rec really took off once Adam Scott and Rob Lowe joined the cast. In Veep's case, it's when Gary Cole and Kevin Dunn have larger roles. Kevin Dunn is a DESTROYER and has some of my favorite moments in the whole show. Then later on, when the Richard Splett character gets introduced, it gets even more amazing.

There's another aspect to Veep that folks starting it now miss out on. I think part of Veep's success is that it's been this amazing palette cleanser after watching Game of Thrones. We talked about this before, but you'd watch Game of Thrones on Sunday, dealing with all of that heavy context, but then you'd watch Veep after, and it makes everything better.

For sure stick with it. I watched it a second time around because my GF never saw it. She really loved it, but on my second go around, it was cool to pick up on a lot of little things in the first and second season that get paid off YEARS later.

It's David Simon.  They never promote his work correctly.  It will probably be awesome.

You seen the cast?  Oscar Isaac, Alfred Molina, Jon Bernthal etc etc..  Yeah, the cast alone trumps any negatives Haggis might bring to the table.

Andy Greenwald says that Show Me a Hero is awesome. Granted, I don't always agree with him, but he is generally pretty fair minded and smart about his reviews. I will definitely watch it, although probably not live on Sunday night.

Anyone still watch Suits?  I've never been a huge fan, but I've enjoyed the show.  It really seems like it's beating a dead horse though.  The show gets sillier and sillier every time they go back to the "someone else is about to learn Mike's secret" well.  They're really reinforcing a negative stereotype about dishonest attorneys.  There's no one out there with the backbone (or good sense) to turn Mike in?

This week's ep really drove home how absurd that is.  An opposing attorney in a case had dated Mike and knew he hadn't gone to law school (how she could be sure he hadn't gone to law school in the year's since they dated was never made clear, probably because that would have invalidated the plot point).  So Mike hid in the break room, while Rachel took over the case and acted like a high school junior instead of a 20-something law student.  Then they concocted a plan to remove all mention of Mike in the filings because the case involved a firm with a government contract and background checks were going to be done on everyone involved.  Then the other woman still found out that it was the same Mike Ross she dated, but signed off on the paperwork because Rachel begged her not to turn Mike in.  Ugh.  The woman put her career on the line and subjected her clients to scrutiny to protect a guy she doesn't like and has no investment in.

The show's only ever had two interesting plotlines: Someone comes close to learning Mike's secret; and Harvey-Louis.  They've beaten both to death.  I like the Loius-Harvey stuff, but when they focus on then too much, every other episode is Louis doing something dumb that endangers the firm, either to spite Harvey or make up with him.

The real problem is that they've had trouble making the supporting cast (beyond Donna and Louis) interesting, so plots based around Jessica or the new bearded lawyer at the firm fail hard and they have to go back to what works.  Really, the show's premise is too limiting to have gone on this wrong without some major shakeup in the status quo.  It's really been hurt by USA's "Blue Sky" philosophy.

I enjoy the dialogue and the Harvey-Mike interplay, but it seems like it's time for the series to wrap.

I know it's walking into fact checking the science behind super powers and I won't admit to knowing how it all works but...if Mike is SO smart and has this ability to memorize stuff at a glance why not have him study for the bar exam and then take said bar? I mean do you have to provide you Law Degree before taking it?

Suits has been unwatchable since last year IMO. Every USA drama has a shelf life of 3-4 seasons before the absurd premise and overall storyline kills it. Suits was my favorite show on TV and then it became nonstop misery porn and the Mike stuff became just too much. I think the last straw was when Louis found out and the following episodes were completely miserable. Suits went from being amusing and fun to watch to a bunch of shitty people doing shitty things to each other like end of the road Nip/Tuck.

Once I saw the "Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes" episode, I was hooked in.  It had been a long time since I laugh so hard at an entire episode of television.  All of the ones you mention are great moments too.

I've seen a few episodes of the Australian original.  You don't have to look too hard to find it.  Of course, it's darker than the American version.  It's interesting because while some of the reviews I've seen are more over-the-top(the 2nd episode deals with murder), the Australian show plays it much more in straight, mockumentary tone.  They do intersect on a couple of reviews too.  While I prefer Forrest (Andy Daly) as the host, the Australian host (Myles Barlow) fits his show well.  Plus, since they shot the show in Australia, I get the feeling not everyone in the scenes are in on the joke, especially when the scenes are in public.  It makes it more cringe-worthy.

Plus, a pre-fame Margot Robbie randomly shows up in an episode.
