Grand Theft Auto V Talk.

Recommended Posts

My wife and son got me Saints Row IV for Father's Day so GTA can go fuck itself.

But seriously - I am reminded that I do enjoy the Saints Row franchise more than GTA.

It's hard to describe why - I think the easiest way to say it is that GTA always feels like work while I almost can turn my brain off and futz around in SR

All this talk of GTA IV online masked me want to try to get one day try to get a GTA IV online session before the servers go down. Anyone interested? Some Cops and Crooks would be a nice change of pace.

I would be interested if you have a PS3 copy. I'm no longer XBL member (and I never will renew).

So I just completed the game this weekend and I was pretty let down by the Big score. After stealing $200M in gold, I ended up with only a measly $14.6 per character. What, does the government tax heist profits now?

Granted, I chose the easy way but I hired what I thought was a decent crew - my gunmen took 12 and 14% cuts (I cut corners by cheaping out with the other crew) - yet somehow $155M in profit just went up in smoke. Very disappointing.

Still, overall loved the game. I'm not the hardcore gamer many of you seem to be - as evidenced by my waiting until I got this on sale instead of waiting in line release day - but this may have been my favorite game ever. I hate to make snap judgements right after finishing playing but to my mind the only other game I remotely enjoyed as much was LA Noire.

How you make the big money in single player are the assassination missions comboed with playing the stock market. You can make billions - but there's really nothing to spend it on.

The last heist was kind of disappointing. Nowhere near something like Three Leaf Clover or the casino heist in SA. Like most of the single player it was too easy - part of the reason I think online heists are going to be a letdown. They're just gonna be slightly expanded versions of the longer missions like Los Santos Connection.

And IIRC Rockstar is going to keep online for GTA4 going but it's not going to track your stats or upload them to the Social Club.

The last mission is a bit like Three Leaf Clover if you go for the guns blazing option. Outrunning the police and dropping the gold in the train is also definitely harder. The subtle option has a bigger Hollywood feel to it (Italian Job style), but is indeed a lot easier.

Three Leaf Clover was pretty awesome at the time, but most missions in 5 blow it out of the water.

In GTA5 your characters are a gang member, a bank robber, and a psychotic meth addict.

In SR4, your character is the President of the United States.  You save the world with the help of Keith David (as himself).

This speaks volumes of good shit for SR4.

Saints Row is what would happen if 8 year olds made GTA. It has to be one of the most hackneyed video game series ever.

I feel even better about my statement now

Going to push through some more story mode missions tonight.  I need to finish up more games on my Pile Of Shame before moving on to an XBone.

Still at 49 of 50 bridges.  Soooo very angry.

Game's been acting buggier than usual lately:

1. Playing Coveted, sometimes the cargobob doesn't land. It just hovers in one place. Try to shoot it down and it blows up, mission over.

2. Playing Rooftop Rumble is an adventure. Sometimes the document is destroyed before it even spawns, sometimes you run out of lives while people are still alive. I had one guy's username in the mission twice the other day (one level 170 something, one level 7), and when he died, we were out of lives even though I was still plenty alive and kicking.

3. Sometimes I'm lazy when it's car-selling time and I call a Merriweather chopper for a lift back to my garage. It'll just stop and hover in midair quite a bit away from you. Then the guy eventually gets pissed that you won't get in and flies off. Then you can't call another one for several minutes, defeating the purpose of calling the chopper in the first place.

Speaking of bugs, I have not seen any spaceships lately but I have noticed that the framerate and rendering quality for GTA Online have gotten significanly worse than usual when spectating other players on WEAZEL, and this is said with the acknowledgement that my wireless connection is not optimal.

But the Saints Row 3 menu screen was untouchable imo

SR3 and SR4 were very fun but there's no reason to go back to the games once you played through them.  In particular, SR4 had a boring open world.  The missions where it locked you to not being able to use superpowers showed how dull it really was.

That being said, SR2 is still one of my favorite games from PS3/360 gen.

I kinda liked SR4 when I rented it, and SR3 just kinda reminds me of GTA lite or something.

All I wanna freakin do online is find some decent racing and find some decent people to play the occasional mission with, and finding both is difficult as shit. I don't care how "realistic" it makes it, turning off catchup sucks if you're not the lead dog. You screw up one time and you can kiss the guy in first goodbye. Traffic on + catchup off = why even bother?

Speaking of which, I like the idea of the non-contact races, but notice everybody always makes the stupidest races non-contact ones? I constantly get that two-mile lap (divided) as a non-contact race and the whole point is beating the crap out of each other. I've played Chickin Drifting as a non-contact race before. Think about that. Meanwhile, the twisty, turny, curvy 16-man races that could really benefit from being non-contact races? Contact, every time.

And I was doing some reading earlier and got nostalgic for the good old days of talking with randoms in public rooms over the game chat. So I donned the headset and headed out for some public roomage. No one said a freaking word. Four different rooms, not one word. Not even little kids squealing over their characters being killed.

And I made the mistake of trying to switch a couple of cars between garages without organizing a game plan first and writing down all the permutations. Jeezis Christ, heaven forbid you want one of your garages to be in some kind of odd order.

There's a lot of very little things wrong with this game, things that you'd assume would take 15 minutes to fix. But R* is stretched thin now beating back the hordes of cheats on Xbox and PS3 - imagine what it's gonna be like when you add two game systems and freaking PCs to that mix?

All I see is more things that are unlocked at levels I'm not at yet, thus forcing me to play more.

And I can't wait to get killed a million times in deathmatches by that new stupid knife.
