JULY 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION V.2.0

Recommended Posts

My gimmick table at Wrestlecon New Orleans was right next to Virgil. Hearing him work for seven hours was magical. Dude is a hustler through and through and every time he got a big fish he would look over at me and smile and nod.

I've been telling people this for over a decade now. Dude never paid for a meal or a drink or a bump to first class in a 2 week Alaskan tour.

Should I know this Sam Roberts guy?

He works on the Opie Show, also has his own radio show, and in addition to that, hosts a wrestling podcast oftentimes with the adorable Katie Linendoll. And is a good guy all around.

I feel like Bayley recognizing the danger inherent in hugging heels is a violation of natural law.

Disagree I see it has her learning from past experiences. now the Bella's should have responded by saying they're make sure Foxy didn't but then when so does BAM foxy kicks her anyway

Virgil is such an unrepentant scumbag.  He does that shit he did to Sam Roberts all the time.  It's probably the only way anybody would give him any money for his autograph.  The worst thing is he does it to little kids too.  Asks them if they want an autograph like he's offering it for free cause it's a little kid, quickly signs something, and then tells the parent to give him money for it.

Oh he got me too. He charged $15 for a picture at the Legends of Wrestling fanfest in 2010. I took a pic and only had a $20. He said he didn't have any change so he took a xeroxed copy of a WWF magazine cover with him and DiBiase on it, autographed it and said he'd throw that in for the extra $5. I didn't really want it but didn't feel like arguing the point. It felt strange that he would charge $15 for something but not have any five dollar bills so I watched his table from afar and saw him do that to at least 4 or 5 other people.

got me back in like the late 90s.  Him and the million dollar man shook me down.  It sucked.  I think it was only 10 bucks, but that was a lot.

Is there a Sam Roberts story that I missed that makes him a douche? He always seems like a genuine and affable dude.

It's cool to hate things on the Internet and call people names they don't deserve if you don't enjoy their content.

Back in the early days of AIW, Lawler was supposed to come in and work for the evening, but something happened. He ended up cutting a promo via speakerphone next to the house mic. It was easily the best part of that show. By like, a wide margin.

At one of those NWA Legends conventions in Charlotte in 2008 I watched him crash a wedding that was happening in the same hotel. He did take a free photo while filling up his plate.

She clearly isn't the female Sting we thought her to be.

Even Sting, occasionally, needed to be talked into helping Flair.

So who's the new Wyatt?

Eli Cottonwood?  Bull Dempsey?  Bully Ray?

Far more interesting if they turned someone already on the roster into a Wyatt.

Option A) Damien Sandow.  Has a beard, has a cool first name, and is down on his luck so Wyatt could convince him that Wyatt could give him the spark he needs to turn it around.  Plus, Damien and Bray could talk philosophically together.

Option B) Sheamus!  Has a beard.  Could be the most interesting thing Sheamus does in his entire WWE career.  Downside: Sheamus face turn when he inevitably splits.

Option C) Goldust!  Goldust mentally breaks when his father dies, Wyatt takes him under his wing, and we get fired up Cody Rhodes as Stardust trying to break Goldust out of Bray's clutches.  Plus Dustin and Harper as a tag team seems like they'd be totally bad ass.

I'm sure they'll go with Option D - the big dude in the Ascension.

So it appears Kevin Owens is totally fucked because Vince McMahon is a fucking moron.

Sometimes I don't even know why I bother. Time and time again I get my hopes up because of how different the booking can be, like with Owens' debut and defeating Cena. Then Vince comes out of his slumber and ruins any hope they've built. Whatever.

More and more, I'm starting to think what CM Punk said about Vince is true, as morbid and mean as that is.

The Wyatt character is so perfect for building a stable around, and there are tons of interesting choices and good explanations for people to join The Family.

But this is a company that is fine with running a rematch a year and a half later between an old zombie with magic powers and an MMA Godzilla (which are both incredible characters to explain into literally any storyline) simply because "THEY WANT TO FIGHT...AT SUMMERSLAM~!" Even when characters explain themselves, like Bray did in the Reigns feud a couple weeks in, they reduce the story to "HE KEEPS ATTACKING HIM AND SPEAKING IN RIDDLES!"

I love wrestling and, for huge chunks of time WWE has been wrestling for me. But I might be done for a while after SummerSlam. The explanations and reactions to the shows here are often more insightful than anything we get on the show itself, and it's just frustrating. Even watching the shows on DVR and keeping up with the PPVs has become a chore. It's just bad TV.

On the plus side, the 2015 Internet MOTY folder has introduced me to Big Japan's Strong division which is like a bunch of hosses who powerlift together stiffing each other for a half hour at a time for our amusement.

Why is Owens fucked?  Is he getting fired?  Hopefully he has a job for a long time and make a boatload of cash for his family while he still can.  Sure it would be great if he was WWE World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Owens, but I think we all know that is a long time away.  I think he still has allied.  Talent rises to the top.  Look at Austin and Bryan.  Hopefully he sticks with it, takes the lumps, and gets the spot he deserves.

He's fucked because he's overweight and doesn't have the looks or physique Vince or Kevin Dunn want and it doesn't matter what HHH, Steph, the Rock, Austin, or any of the trainers in WWE think. As far as a boatload of cash, hah, sure, if he's lucky. I mean, that's the other part of this, right? It's luck. Bryan had/has world class talent, but not the looks. He was lucky fans latched onto him as much as they did and he was lucky Vince changed his mind.

And ultimately, it comes down to our enjoyment, right? How enjoyable is it for WWE to get our hopes up time and time again, only to quickly go back to the status quo? How enjoyable is it to think, "man, he should be in a better position in this and not be wasted" or to think "he should be given more time than other people are getting?" It's not much fun to be honest. And he doesn't necessarily refer to Kevin Owens. He refers to anyone who comes up and starts putting lightning in a bottle.

I mean, this constant pattern does nothing to inspire confidence in Samoa Joe, Finn Balor, Sami Zayn, Tyler Breeze, Gable, or anyone not named Big Cass. And when Big Cass comes up and gets pushed to the moon because you know that shit is going to happen, it will quickly be without the one thing that makes him special, Enzo, because Enzo is too fucking short and too fucking weird looking. You don't need to be able to see the future to recognize how patterns continue to repeat themselves.

What I'm hoping for now is two things. One, I'm hoping NXT takes off in a big, big way, but even then we're left with how that is the feeder league for WWE. And two, people share the Shield's, or really, Dean's attitude towards John Cena in refusing to job to Cena. The Shield got it right. When you job to Cena, you become like everyone else. If you're lucky, you can make it through all of that.
