UFC Fight Night 70: Machida vs. Romero (6/27/2015) - Hollywood, FL (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino)

This is just my opinion, but I thought Romero edged out round 1.  Just didn't think Machida scored any effective offense in that frame.

Sherdog (Breen, Chris Nelson, Brian Knapp) and Junkie all gave Lyoto round 1. It was very close, but I thought Machida just barely got it. I think Romero got him numbers wise though.

Lyoto's footwork and striking speed just seemed really labored compared to his normal (incredibly high) standards. It was still a really high level fight between two terrific athletes. I enjoyed it a lot but this ain't the same Machida of a few years ago.

In my opinion, it was combination of the smaller Octagon, his age, and the fact that Romero just such an explosive athlete. Machida had to fight two tremendous athletes back-to-back, whom both plausibly could be UFC Middleweight champion at some point.

We've all seen what Romero can do. I think Machida saw that as well coming into the fight. The point being that Romero saw how the beginning of the fight played out and wasn't very interested in trading rounds with Machida.

You know, I'm no theologian, but I have a feeling that Jesus wouldn't be big on dudes beating the shit out of each other in a cage as a way of making a living. Yoel Romero, your reading of the Bible confuses me.

Ignoring the Romero post fight hilarity...

The UFC continues pairing Hacran Dias up with wrestlers. Funny how he said he'd fight differently next time around, yet he fought this fight like he usually does.

Marreta's head kick KO is a KOTY of the year candidate. Kudos to Bossé for the swank undercut though.

Cara de Sapato beat Gordon pretty easily. Awesome performancd. Serious potential there.

Larkin/Santiago was a crazy fight. Santiago's such an entertaining fighter. Weird to think Larkin beat the current welterweight champ at 185 in their last fight before joining the UFC.

Romero with another amazing performance. Where do you go with him next? Hendo? Vitor? He should definitely be a win away from a title shot.

I swear to God I thought Hacran was in his mid 20s until the Tale of the Tape came up. Maybe it's the matchups, but he hasn't done a ton in three years of being in the UFC. He went from being on top of everyone's prospect list to just being an average fighter doing very average things. However, you can see some of the skills that got people talking. For instance, when he got Makashvili on the ground, it looked like he was going to easily pass the guard and just go to town. Then, nothing happened. That's both weird and concerning.

The loss to Nik Lentz ended the hype/buzz to a high degree.

He's a 145 lb. male version of Claudia Gadaelha (or is Claudia Gadaelha a 115 lb. female version of him?) style wise.

He's from an exciting fighter, but he's a very talented grappler.

As crazy it might sound, he actually reminds me of Aldo but without all the striking essentials to be him. Same body type and exact same stance. It's like Aldo if he decided he was going to be a jiu-jitsu player for the entirety of the fight.

They're all Nova União guys, so it's not that far fetched. The have similar TDD, but I don't even remember what Aldo's ground game is like. Sure he's used it here and there in fights, but not set enough like Hacran.

Funny thing, I do remember Aldo getting choked out by someone in a ring in Brazil in his only loss which was at 155.

He ran though poor Mike Thomas Brown. Just steamrolled him on the ground.

I actually thought MTB would give him trouble there. That wasn't the case at all.

Honestly, I think Dias is pretty decent.  I thought he should've won the fight against Lamas.  Plus he was able to beat Elkins.  He has some skills.  He definitely deserves his spot in the rankings and could break into the top 10 at some point.

Aldo is supposedly great on the ground, but getting him on the ground isn't exactly easy.  From what I remember from his WEC debut, he was billed as a grappler over being a striker.  He could be one of those dudes like Chuck Liddell who uses his grappling defensively in order to force you into a position where he can knock your block off, or he can be like Anderson Silva who uses his grappling as the last line of defense.  Hopefully he isn't like Vitor Belfort, who was always billed as a black belt in jiu-jitsu, but he seems to get out grappled by anyone who is competant on the ground.
