2013 Summer Blockbuster Pool

S.K.o.S.

Recommended Posts

I don't have my original lists to refresh my memory with since I didn't keep a copy.

I don't remember my lists so I don't know where I placed it

I should probably repost everyone's lists - or it might be better if I just linked to an archived version of the board before it crashed.

Anyway, I've got bad news and good news.  The bad news is that this week's update will be late yet again, since I'll be in Washington from Thursday to Saturday.  The good news is that the prize dvds have all arrived.

That's a link to an archived version of the pre-crash thread.  Everyone's lists should be in there, if you want to take a look.

Also, since I'm in second place right now, here's a reminder that I declared myself ineligible to win any prizes.

The critics didn't love anything this summer and my poor RT list has felt the impact.  Taking a quick glance at the current scores, I think only one person has done better on the RT list than the box office list.  Interesting.

Also, a movie with only a 78% rating is going to end up finishing 3rd on the RT list.  Very telling.

Star Trek has the highest RT rating, but it didn't seem to blow anyone away.  At least not with the people I've talked to who saw it.  Hell, I barely hear the movie discussed now.

Yeah I agree. This really feels like a summer where "a bunch of things happened", clearly massive amounts of money were made when you add it altogether as the overall numbers have been high, but I don't know how many individual movies will go down as anyone's personal favourites.

What a crazy RT summer.  If you'd have told me that STID would have a higher freshness rating than Elysium, I'd have told you to quit using the controlled substance you were smoking.

The sleeper hit of the summer appears to have been The Conjuring.

How many people went in expecting District 9 - The Sequel though? If I was in this contest, that would have been one of my biggest concerns.

No one did, but I was sorta hoping that Bloomkamp's next feature would be more than "okay."  Certainly District 9 isn't the only story he can tell.

You really expected Elysium to feel that average?  Pacific Rim had more heart.

I know that it can be disasterous to give a hot indie guy a huge budget (aka The John Woo Rule), but I rather hoped that Elysium woul've been more than just okay..

Those were the two movies I was most anticipating this summer (going to Elysium this week), but from a prediction standpoint, giant Kaiju movie probably beats out preachy dystopian movie. Even though I expect Elysium to be more engaging, Pacific Rim was at least fun to watch and not antagonizing. Either you love it a lot or hate it. Sure, you had people nitpicking it in the early reviews talking about Power Rangers and Hunnam being wooden. But that's not anything surprising. As soon as you put the political arc in there, you going to divide people one way or another.

I personally thought STID was the sure-fire bet for a top freshness rating. I easily put it at #1 in my RT list.

In somewhat related news, just came from watching Elysium and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Oh, I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy Elysium.  I suppose I expected less of a sermon on class warfare.  Max's story is terrlbly compelling on paper and the best dystopian stories showcase the effects of the broken society on the characters instead of waving the dystopia in your face.

PKD never comes out and says SOCIETY IS EVIL~! in A Scanner Darkly.  He just gives you the events as they happen and how the society affect people's lives and you make your own judgment calls about how fucked up things are.

I'm really getting the reverse vibe from Elysium/Pac Rim than most people are.

I saw Elysium last night and really enjoyed it.  I appreciated that it didn't try to be a smarter movie than it really was, like Inception, and let the audience ride along on the fun storytelling, themes and action. And the fact that it was only 106 minutes long.

On the other hand, I thought Pacific Rim was exceedingly average.  No balls, no soul, nothing weird, no suspence, nothing intense.  I guess it had "heart" in the sense that it wasn't too cynical and was all feel good Robot Jox and wholesome flyboys.  Action sequences were pretty boring, lots of water splashing everywhere and then cutting to people whoa-whoa-whoa!!!-ing inside of robots. There was nothing really awful, either.  I couldn't have hated it if I tried.

Though if it launches Charlie Day as the next Rick Moranis, then I guess it was all worth my money.  And it did get me to dust off my VHS of the far superior Godzilla vs. Mecha-Zilla.

Me, too. I think I had it at #1 as well. It's also my personal favorite movie of the year so far.
