MAY 2015 MOVIE THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

The moral of the movie itself is that people should define themselves instead of allowing themselves to be defined by the labels that society brands into their foreheads.   A noble enough sentiment but kids will only pay attention to stuff that has the occasional bit of toilet humor to amuse them, so take that for what it is worth.

A nice message for all the teenyboppers, but maybe it would be better delivered if they're weren't calling a (by any standard) very slim and attractive girl ugly and fat.

Like, if she's fat, anyone who isn't a size 0 is fat.

IMO, all these pygmalion teen movies just fuck up kids even more because the girl is usually very beautiful even BEFORE the makeover.

Poor Ann. Poor, poor Ann.

I always had an idea for a teen movie with a genuine fat kid. And the popular kids try to make them over for a bet or something. They try to take them to the gym and out for for new clothes. But then the kid is like "Nah, I'm happy just the way I am" and the popular kids are offended at first but then realize this is the most healthy attitude to have.

This would be a very short movie, admittedly.

Angus has a good bit of this.

That's how I felt watching it recently. You sit there and it's like "what the fuck did he just say? Seriously?" For my money the black/white buddy cop thing is done way better in Die Hard With A Vengeance, and they take race on properly.

Full disclosure, I cannot have a TV playing and pass by Die Hard With A Vengeance and not stop to watch the whole thing.

Die Hard with a Vengeance is awesome and doesn't get nearly enough love.  Also, Ludvig Borga is in it for about 15 seconds.

Die Hard with a Vengeance is the only one that ever even came close to touching the original.

Man, the chemistry between Willis and Jackson is truly fantastic. These bitter, pissed off guys being bitter and pissed off with each other...and it's amazing.

I don't know why they didn't try to bring Jackson back for the other films.

I don't think it'll work, but maybe Roger Ebert can explain it. The middle of the film which I have seen (I admit not seeing all of it) told me all I needed to know.

I haven't read an Ebert review that ridiculously sensitive since he gave The Hitcher (the original one mind you) zero stars based on some vague notion that the movie was morally reprehensible.

Anyway, my love of The Last Boy Scout is well-documented here. As is my sorrow over Damon Wayans not becoming a bigger star off of it. Blankman, Celtic Pride, and Great White Hype really brutalized his career man, and when he couldn't draw numbers teaming with a white-hot Sandler in Bulletproof, that was it. Although Bulletproof actually is pretty good to be honest.

I read his review of The Hitcher (http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-hitcher-1986) and he does have a point that the waitress' death was overly torturous and gruesome and a bit out of place with the rest of the film.  Still, he went a little far in extrapolating a critique of the entire film as "diseased and reprehensible" because he disliked this scene. He seemed to form the opinion that the scriptwriters were mysoginists and it colored his whiole review.

Like most people, Ebert mellowed over time.  19 years later, he gave The Devil's Rejects 3 stars.

Very true. And I have read The Hitcher's review and it's bullshit. But he did have a point about The Last Boy Scout, and despite that you can tell he liked the film anyway. I don't think there's a problem with liking this or 48 Hrs. for their good points as long as we recognize the bad.

A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labeled the DUFF - Designated Ugly Fat Friend - by her prettier, more popular counterparts.

Did the people making the movie notice that the girl playing the "ugly fat friend", well, isn't?

Presumably this was produced by the same people who didn't notice that in she's all that the lead actress is clearly a stunning fashion model even before she takes off glasses.

C'mon, Reed, she's wearing overalls...she's obviously ugly and fat. :)

Thoughts about "Duff":

1) What's the veejay Duff up to?

2) The porn parody starts with "Up the ..."

3) The title reminds me of the DGUSA stable the "Dumb Ugly Fucks."

Ebert's bad reviews, or ones where he is just flat out historically wrong, are fun reading..   Die Hard and My Cousin Vinny come to mind.

Still not as bad as defending Sofia Coppola's acting in The Godfather part III, which is, in all seriousness, still the worst acting job I've seen in a major motion picture.

I'm not sure anyone anywhere said that Joe Hallenbeck is a great guy. He's not a great guy at all and at no point does the film make him out to be one.  He's a "fuck up"..  An admitted fuck up. He's a loser. He sleeps in his clothes. He doesn't bother shaving. He's pretty much an alcoholic. He's an asshole. He smokes a ton of cigarettes. That last part doesn't make him a bad guy but the film explains over and over again who he is as a person.

Maybe you or Ebert are viewing him as a hero.  Black and white.  I don't view shit in black and white.  I see a lot of grey area.  People aren't black and white. We are extremely complicated. This guy is an asshole who just so happens to save the day.  That's reality.

There are very few Reginald Hudlin related things that I like. There is Django Unchained, the first three House Party movies (he only directed the first FWIW), that time Boondocks spoofed him ("I wrote Black Panther!"), and The Great White Hype. I dunno if that should have been a vehicle for someone like Damon because it was going to be very limited in drawing at the box office anyway. However, it did have its moments. The weigh-in scene and "Oh, I'm in shape. I'm round!" stand out the most.

I've actually never seen it, I just know it did horrible box office. I think I was one of about a dozen people who actually saw Bamboozled in the theater, though. I might be the only one who actually liked it.

Yeah, I saw Bamboozled when it came out. I vaguely remember anything about it so I can't say whether I liked it or not.
