MAY 2015 WRESTLING DISCCUSSION

Recommended Posts

This goddam month, this goddam month.

I was away all weekend seeing a The Smiths tribute act with my wife and briefly saw something about people hating deathmatches, as my user name suggests I was ready to wade right I on it, but yeesh, that Sunny news.

Urgh, I'm off to watch some 2003 IWA MS death matches to get the image out of my head.

Also, fake Morrissey way, way better and cheaper than real Morrissey.

Normally don't do double posts willingly, but the separate these thoughts I will this time.

Baltimore has been getting some damn fine wrestling events lately.  I'd go to Payback but the thought of getting upper level tickets is not kosher with me.  That part of the crowd knows they won't be on TV and couldn't care less to react to anything.  I see no point in wasting money on that when I can see it just fine on the Network.  But it's cool it's held here.

What I did willingly spend money on was seeing Jim Ross last night.  Got VIP tickets and met him beforehand.  He appreciated the can of Old Bay (it's a Baltimore thing, and it rules) and he was pretty damn nice.  He had his stories, starting off with how great Baltimore is then going into his routine of sorts.  He thankfully didn't mention anything about killing animals, but did talk about Leroy Mcguirk wanting to kill Ted Dibiase.  That's what happens when Ted dated Mike for some time.  Also told a helluva story about Ric Flair that made us laugh and think "Of COURSE Flair would do that!"   Good stories.  The Q&A went a tad long, but were generally decent questions.  But mothafuck the guys who asked about Benoit and Mr. Andersons's last day at WWE.  Why they asked it I don't know.  But it was a great time.  On top of that, it's pretty rad I could tweet JR and he responds about the show.  That's pretty cool.

Oh, and to top it off, Seth Rollins threw the first pitch at the Orioles game.  Adam Jones is a huge fan so he had his replica belt and was hamming it up.  And for good measure the O's players came out to WWE themes.  There's a couple MCW shows that seem like fun, and ROH coming back in July.  I love this town.

I was sorely tempted by one of those MCW shows with Lawler.

What the hell happened to Bob Backlund after he lost the title to The Iron Sheik? He was just "gone" until his WWF comeback years later.

I looked him up on Wikipedia and it said this:

After the WWF and semi-retirement (1984–1992)

After leaving the WWF, Backlund had a run in the short-lived Pro Wrestling USA, a joint promotion of the NWA and the American Wrestling Association (AWA), meant to combat the national expansion of the WWF. In Pro Wrestling USA, Backlund unsuccessfully challenged AWA Champion Rick Martel. He soon dropped out of the pro wrestling scene. He made a surprise return in 1991 for Herb Abrams' short-lived UWF. At "Beach Brawl" (the UWF’s only pay-per-view event), he defeated Ivan Koloff.[22] Backlund also wrestled for Newborn UWF and UWF International in Japan, in a series of matches with Nobuhiko Takada. During his time away from the ring, he coached amateur wrestling at Bacon Academy and Rocky Hill High School in Connecticut.

..but that's not a whole lot of work for an eight-year span.

What does "semi-retirement" even mean? Just no one calling? It's now 2015, Backlund is 65 years old & still not retired, so...

I just find it weird how no one ever really talks about Bob Backlund other than losing his title to Sheik then coming back as a heel to feud with Bret almost a decade later. He was the world champion of the biggest U.S. promotion, no?

This comes up periodically, as a kid old enough to remember Backlund on the way out, and with little access to anything non-WWE it seemed as if he legit disappeared off the face of the earth until he came back cross face chickenwinging everyone in 93-94

Rumor has it that Sunny/Tammy Lynn Sytch has signed a contract with Vivid to do full on hardcore porn videos

I think I suddenly don't like porn anymore.

Sasha Grey killed it for me.

Also, I'm eagerly anticipating discussions re: "workrate," "punches" & "missile dropkicks" in connection to this news.

I remember a few years ago Sunny was planning on doing a series of adult videos with her then boyfriend. In an interview, she even claimed she wanted to have a child with said gentleman and film one of the movies whilst pregnant.

This is the same boyfriend who she later beat up and kept violating his restraining orders.

Is it wrong that part of me thinks that Tammy would be in a better place in her life if she had just gone straight to adult films instead of wrestling all those years ago?

I hate to say this, but she seems like a genuinely bad person and she would have ended up like this no matter what.

She would probably have burnt all her bridges in porn by now or be in prison because she would not have had WWE rehab to fall back on for years,

As a man who spent some of his formative years in Greece, I can tell you that there are some crazy attractive women in even the tiniest towns. The village I lived in had maybe had maybe 15,000 people but an amazing amount of stunners. Including one that had an Australian accent? I never figured that out.

Titus O'Neil is a big guy with a lot of charisma but he's got lousy timing and clumsy footwork.  Teaming him with D-Young is the best use of him cause Young is solid but has no personality on his own.  Young does most of the work in the ring, tags in O'Neil who hits a few power spots, barks, and then they do their dance.

The rise of Team Hell No and Abe getting fired really shut down any momentum the PTP had a few years ago.

I hope they get into the tag team Elimination Chamber match.  Just doing the millions of dollars dance in their pod the whole time.  All three members of The New Day jammed into another pod.

I really want Los Matadores to finally turn on El Torito with Kalisto making the save.  Then Hunico turns on Kalisto and burns that Sin Cara mask cause it's got the curse of the Ghost Bear upon it or something.  Then Kalisto and El Torito team up cause the height difference between them isn't that great.

Anything that gets me more El Torito matches.

Lawler's "WTF is this, is this real life?" face totally sells the photo.

I just looked up the segment with him cutting his way out of the box for the first time and I forgot how goofy it was. The chainsaw is so loud but it's obviously fake noise because the chain isn't moving despite the fact that there are sparks shooting out of the chainsaw. He really doesn't look menacing at all but the New Age Outlaws have to run from him like he's Leatherface.

You don't need a chain to cut someone with a chainsaw. Ask Matsunaga.

Can we just settle on "Greek women are incredibly hot."

Greek women are super attractive, that's for sure. Only thing is many of them have huge egos and are snobbish. It's a real turnoff for me. Luckily Trish and the two Marias don't have that ego like they do.

Also remembered another reason why I don't care for going to the PPV tonight. Chanting "Husky Harris" on Wyatt's debut is pretty bad.

Question about Chainsaw Charlie's chainsaw. More of an observation, but was Funk doing something wrong with it?

Everytime he had it running, sparks were flying out of it, but then he'd put the blade on the ringpost and sparks would fly out too. I always thought, how obviously they wouldn't put a real chain on the thing, but was the sparking thing something Funk was supposed to activate when he put it on the post (to give the illusion that there was a chain), and Terry Funk, being Terry Funk, proceeded to be Terry Funk?

I think all hope for Tammy was lost after Candido died. Like Layne Staley after his girlfriend Demri died.

The sparking gimmick was something that the Leatherfaces had too; they push a button and the thing just shoots sparks. The fucked up thing is that one time somebody didn't screw the gas cap on Terry's saw on properly and he ended up drenched in gas; luckily the sparking malfunctioned because otherwise he would have went up like a light. I have to ask, when/where was Matsunaga gigged with a saw?

Bob Backlund in PWUSA was a heel btw. There's some interview footage on Youtube that is proto-Mr. Backlund and pretty good.
