Curt McGirt
I just got the story from the source. Both my mom and my dad knew their friend had watched Halloween on TV, which they had too. One night they knew their friend was coming home late at night and all the lights were off at night so they decided to pull a fucking rib and my dad did the breathing. Lady ran right out the front door screaming. Then -- get this -- they DID IT AGAIN ON THE PHONE about a year after. The first time, she wouldn't speak to them for about a week; the second time, they knew better than to ever pull it again because she probably wouldn't ever talk to them again. My (and your) parents got up into some shit back in the day haha
Execproducer
His style is just ... a style I like better than Karloff's. All I'm saying. I fall on the Karloff side of this arguement, but those are mostly excellent counter-points. However, I wouldn't fault Boris for work he took late in his life anymore than I would Buster Keaton. Or Lugosi for that matter.
Brian Fowler
Bela had incredible incredible charisma... But I've seen a lot of good movies, and no real evidence he was much of an actor. Great screen presence, magnetic... But actually acting? Not really.
nate
Even "White Zombie," "Son of Frank.," "A&C," and the Universal Poes? I think even in "Devil Bat," he puts in some good twists on the character. And even in some shit like "Ape Man" he seems to try to effect the behavior of a primate. He also wasn't given the *best* material to work with. That's a major point to consider. Some of the best stuff Boris was given can be as dry as 3 day old shit. Jingus
I thought Lugosi was downright bad in White Zombie, Return of the Vampire, and Murder in the Rue Morgue. Thought that Karloff blasted him off the screen in The Raven. I guess our tastes are SO different that we're not gonna agree on much here. But while I did love him as Ygor ("because, I... [mumbles]stole bodies[/mumbles]... THEY SAID!") it's not really fair to compare his performance to Boris's in that one. The Monster is comatose on a table for the vast majority of the film, and then is given sweet-fuck-all to do even for most of the time he's awake. That one scene where he's looking at himself in the mirror, though, shows that Boris still had plenty of gas in the tank when the material actually lets him loose. piranesi
Has anyone played around with any of the horror-specific streaming services? There are a lot of them: Shudder (AMC owned) Screambox Full Moon Streaming (more cult stuff I think) The Crypt exploitation.tv I'm sort of hoping one of them has all the weird VHS-y 80s slashers that one might waste a lazy Saturday in October watching. But I don't want to just end up with the same giant steaming pile of straight-to-Chiller Channel junk that seems to clutter up every streaming services "horror" section nowadays. Execproducer
I have Shudder. Haven't watched much yet, but it looks like it will be worth my money. I just got exploitation.tv last night. I was not aware that it is about 70% porn. "Classic Porn" at that. They are suppossed to be adding films at a rapid clip, so I will give it a month to see what happens. Execproducer
I'll check Shudder later and let you know what it has in the way of 80's slashers.
Execproducer
Has anyone played around with any of the horror-specific streaming services? There are a lot of them: Shudder (AMC owned) Here is a partial list of older movies streaming on Shudder, excluding (mostly) zombies, vampires, and ghosts. The Crazies (73) Deep Red (76) Schizo (76) Eaten Alive (77) Magic (78) The Toolbox Murders (78) Tourist Trap (79) Maniac (80) Mother's Day (80) Bloody Birthday (81) Dead and Buried (81) Deadly Blessing (81) Sleepaway Camp (83) Combat Shock (86) Dead-End Drive-In (86) Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (86) Return to Horror High (87) Maniac Cop (88) Intruder (89) Shakma (90) I checked about half of them on Netflix but couldn't find them for streaming. They have a pretty good selection of more modern fare as well. I'm getting ready to watch one I'd never heard of before called The Perfect Host with David Hyde-Pierce. S.K.o.S.
This Bone Tomahawk movie looks like something myself and others should see. Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox and Patrick Wilson. When a group of cannibal savages kidnaps settlers from the small town of Bright Hope, an unlikely team of gunslingers, led by Sheriff Franklin Hunt, sets out to bring them home. But their enemy is more ruthless than anyone could have imagined, putting their mission - and survival itself - in serious jeopardy. This is a gritty action-packed thriller chronicling a terrifying rescue mission in the Old West. It's apparently available now on VOD, and running an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes with 35 reviews. I get the impression that it may be more Western than horror? Or like, a very gory Western? Still, though.

piranesi
Shudder is subsctiption but only $5 a month. But it also is the one that works with the most things (Ios, Android, Roku) Shoutfactory TV is free with ads. I don't think I need a bunch of old porn. Ideally I'd like something like an El Rey on demand. A good mix of old horror (70s-80s) and blackspoitation and some Kung Fu and some trucker movies and some disco rollerskating movies. Exploitation TV seems to lean more toward sleaze and I think is Roku/Xbox/laptop only. Full Moon streaming seems promising. They have the Something Weird catalog which is also kind of porny. I honestly think Fandor may have a decent selection of exploitation plus you get lots of Art films and a rotating selection of Criterion picks and Yakuza movies, etc.
Execproducer
Yup, Fandor is a good buy at $90 a year.
The Unholy Dragon
As a big fan of the franchise, I gotta say Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension was a hugely disappointing franchise ending.
(BP)
I downloaded Frightpix for my Xbox. Mostly newer Red Box bait low budget stuff, but I'll probably check a few movies out and it's free. We started watching City of the Dead last night, but I realized I'd seen it before and lost interest. After failing to find Death Spa (I couldn't even get the YouTube pay channel to work), we settled on Elm Street 2. It's a real crowd pleaser if you let everyone you're watching know to look out for the not-even-a-little-subtle subtext. I wouldn't call it a good Freddy movie, but it's a fun watch. Roman
I watched four horror movies last night: Visions, The Diabolical, A Wicked Within and Unnatural. All of them absolute bullshit. I just got Bone Tomahawk. I'm looking forward to that one.
S.K.o.S.
Just learned that the head curator (read: #1 guy who picks the movies) at Shudder is Colin Geddes, who's also the programmer for the Midnight Madness movies at the Toronto Film Festival. fyi. Curt McGirt
Bone Tomahawk looks awesome. Also, it's written by former Metal Maniacs Magazine scribe S. Craig Zahler and I'm sure his crazy ass came up with something great. Three stars on Rogerebert.com.

Jingus
So Ash vs. the Evil Dead is already amazing.Oh hell yeah! Ash telling horrible lies to get laid, zombies who won't stop laughing, and a 1973 Oldsmobile (wait, how did he salvage that thing from King Arthur's castle?). The CGI blood was a sad sign of our currently-devolved times in horror media; but it's counterbalanced by consistently much better acting from the supporting cast than was the case in the original movies. Just found out there's an English-language remake of Martyrs. Oh hell no. There've been some good remakes of foreign horror films, but have any of the remakes really felt necessary? They're practically always inferior to the original, The Ring was the only one that I thought actually improved upon its inspirator.
Jiji
I can't believe the Evil Dead franchise is back in 2015. It didn't feel like real life, more like some incredibly wonderful sugar-induced fantasy. The scene with the two police officers was so much fun. The scene in the trailer was even more fun. But, yeah, the CGI (blood particularly) is horrendous. The show's already been picked up for a second season, hopefully there's a bigger budget for that stuff. Needed more deadites yelling about swallowing souls too. The Classic will never die.
