Posted May 30, 2017 Share Posted May 30, 2017 Watched Raw last night (the movie, not WWE), and was a little disappointed, as I was expecting something really extreme after hearing the stories of people fainting in the theater and such. But, great effects, and a lot of vivid colors and really beautiful imagery (like the opening shot) in between the icky parts. The toothbrush sitting on the floor of the shower was a nice touch. De Palma must've shot it ten times from ten different angles. Also, John Cassavetes is so freakin' slimy in that movie he totally deserves a fate like that rather than your run of the mill cerebral haemmorhage. Brian DePalma had the good taste not to go with author John Farris's ending and roll with the death by explosive telekinesis finale. ian McGreevy and Lee Shipma tried to reboot The Fury in 2008 and wanted to follow up with the three sequels to The Fury that Farris wrote from 2001 to 2008. Farris did not want to be involved in helping with the script adaptations so the projects were shelved. One day, I will make good on doing this The Fury / Firestarter double feature I planed to watch one rainy afternoon and I will dare myself to tell one socio-political thriller with psychics in it from the other. The haemorrhage, the sheiks on the carnival ride flying through the window, the "whirling dervish of blood" (TM Stephen King), and the end are all awesome. How they stitch them together is what I have a problem with. There's been a lot of horror on TV today: The Fury, Legend of Hell House, American Mary, and now The House on Skull Mountain (which looks to be capital B-A-D BAD). I also got to see a little bit of Sir Lee in Rasputin the Mad Monk! Quote Patty Jenkins is coming off an incredible accomplishment with Wonder Woman. Its opening weekend at the box-office is the highest domestic opening for a female director, and she made a movie that’s feeling the love from just about everyone. Jenkins will direct the Wonder Woman sequel, which will supposedly bring Diana’s (Gal Gadot) story to America next, but she’s also going to work on a project for the horror streaming service Shudder, titled Riprore, in the future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shudder has announced a new wave of original content, starting with Rodney Ascher‘s (Room 237) new documentary, Primal Scream. Another project they have in development has Jenkins’ name on it. One would assume she’s producing Riprore, and maybe even directing it, but there are no details on the extent of her involvement. Right now, it is not clear if this is a film or series. Riprore is an original story from Jenkins’ husband, Sam Sheridan, who’s a former MMA fighter and the author of “The Disaster Diaries.” The story deals with gangs and maybe the end of the world. Here’s the official synopsis: “[Riprore] focuses on the heart of gangland Los Angeles, where a gruesome discovery sparks a frenetic homicide investigation, but underneath the surface lurks a darkness that leads to the end of days.” It doesn’t sound quite as optimistic as Wonder Woman, but maybe more similar to the tone of The Killing, for which Jenkins directed the pilot. Riprore is one of the many new Shudder originals in the works. The streaming service, which costs $4.99 a month, is trying to expand with more genre stories. In a statement, VP of Development at Shudder, Owen Shiflett, said: Primal Screen’ is a gripping, unique horror documentary that’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen and we look forward to presenting it to our members as our first ‘Shudder Original.’ Expanding into original programming is a natural progression for us, and we’re proud to further enhance Shudder’s offering by bringing our members the vision of emerging and established storytellers who are pushing limits within genre entertainment. Jenkins fits the bill of an established storyteller who could push the limits within genre entertainment. She just managed to make some familiar elements feel new and exciting through her eyes with Wonder Woman – which will hopefully lead to another Patty Jenkins film in the near-future. Whatever she decides to makes next – a Wonder Woman sequel, Riprore, or something else entirely – we’re eagerly looking forward to it. I had no idea that Patty's hubby was THE Sam Sheridan. That's fucking awesome! His book, The Fighter's Mind, is next up for reading on my Pile of Shame after I finish Pelan's second short story collection. J.T. Posted June 10, 2017 Author Share Posted June 10, 2017 I have redeemed myself and finally have removed The Void from my Pile Of Shame. I though it was perfectly fine. It was one of those Lovecraftian stories that some modern author told slightly better than Lovecraft did. Spoiler I think I was sympathetic with the doctor in a weird way because he really went through a lot of trouble for the sake of his daughter's memory and gave away his sanity and his soul for the prospect of having her back in his life again.... ....of course that did not work out too well for anyone..... One of my greatest fears in life is losing my child and I don't even imagine how I'd go about processing all of that if it happened. I thought it was really powerful how the movie showed that even the most noble sentiments in the world can become perverted if your desire goes against the laws of nature. The doctor annihilated all of those lives because he did not know how to deal with his grief. It was pretty awesome how the doctor tried to tempt Daniel (another grieving father) with the same Faustian bargain, but the cop decided instead to sacrifice himself to contain the evil. All true fathers will choose to protect rather than destroy. I also loved the old school special effects. Hopefully I can scrape some matinee cash together to go and see It Comes At Night tomorrow afternoon after work. Some things are predictable. - Marilyn Burns stole the movie for her - She is already saying things like "Sally?" "What now?" "Nothin'" - She freaked the fuck out when Franklin got it - But the thing that disgusted her the most in the whole movie was Franklin with a sausage dangling from his mouth. BUT the only reason I'm posting this is to give a special shout out to Allen Danziger who played Jerry: This guy: For the scream he does when Leatherface surprises him. He does a straight up Ned Flanders Male soprano little girl shriek. It is kind of amazing and perfect and if you've never noticed it, pay attention to that scene next time.
