2015 Summer Blockbuster Movie Pool

S.K.o.S.

Recommended Posts

My three most anticipated movies of the summer are The Gift, Regression and Sinister 2.  But this is not about me!

Below are 20 movies set to be released this summer. You need to make two lists:

List 1: Choose 15 of the 20 movies and rank them from highest to lowest according to the domestic box office gross you think each movie will make through its first 4 weeks (28 days) of release. Note that you're not trying to leave out the 5 movies you think will do the worst; just leave out the 5 that you feel least confident about ranking. Also, you don't need to guess how much money they'll make - just rank them. I'll be using boxofficemojo.com as the source for how much money each movie makes.

List 2: Choose 15 of the 20 movies (doesn't have to be the exact same 15 as your first list) and rank them from highest to lowest according to the rating you think each movie will have on rottentomatoes.com after it's been out for 4 weeks. Again, you're not necessarily trying to leave out the five worst movies.

Scoring: Your two lists will be compared with the actual ranks of the 15 movies, and your score will be the sum of the absolute values of the differences between the rank you gave to each movie and its correct rank. LOWEST score wins.

Tiebreaking: In addition to your two lists, pick any one of the twenty movies and post exactly how much money you think it'll make domestically, in dollars, in its first 28 days of release.  If two or more people end up with the same number of points, the person whose dollar figure is closer to correct (on a percentage basis) will be ranked ahead of the other.  If that still results in a tie, then the person who posted their entry earlier will be ranked ahead of the other. Also, if two or more movies end up tied in box office gross right down to the dollar (pretty much impossible, but just in case), or end up with the exact same rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the ranking of those two movies will be set to whatever is more favorable for each individual person.

The movies:

Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 1)
Hot Pursuit (May 8)
Mad Max: Fury Road (May 15)
Tomorrowland (May 22)
Aloha (May 29)
Entourage (Jun 3)
Spy (Jun 5)
Jurassic World (Jun 12)
Inside Out (Jun 19)
Ted 2 (Jun 26)
Magic Mike XXL (Jul 1)
Terminator: Genisys (Jul 1)
Minions (Jul 10)
Ant-Man (Jul 17)
Trainwreck (Jul 17)
Pixels (Jul 24)
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (Jul 31)
Fantastic Four (Aug 7)
Straight Outta Compton (Aug 14)
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Aug 14)

Deadline: The last day you can post your lists is June 2nd, 2015, but any movie that has already premiered must be left off your lists. So, for example, if you enter after May 1st, you can't put Avengers 2 on either of your lists because it'll already be in theatres.

Editing lists: You may edit your lists after they're posted, but only up until the release of any movie that appears on at least one of your lists. Since time of entry is a tiebreaker, if you edit a list, make a new post stating that you've edited.

"The Adjustment Bureau" rule: Movies' release dates are not set in stone. If a movie's release date gets moved past September 30, 2015, and you have it on a list, it gets removed, and you get an additional number of points equal to your average points per movie on that list, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Prizes: The prize pool will consist of three Criterion dvds: THE THIN BLUE LINE, THE FISHER KING and IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, along with copies of up to three of my favorite movies from 2014, to be added to the prize pool when we hit 12, 15 and 18 entrants.
The first-place finisher will get to choose their prize out of all the available movies, second place will get to pick from what's left, and so on.

Good luck!

I was thinking about taking a break from the game this summer.  I really get into the research part of this game, but it takes time.

However, I have a feeling Suicide Kings is going put WHIPLASH as one of the prizes this year.  If he does that, I have no choice but to go all out this year.  I need that movie.

Yeah - Pitch Perfect 2 might be the most stunning omission

Actually AND San Andreas not being there

And I have no idea what Aloha is

EDIT - Okay - now I remember what Aloha is. But still of the two movies opening that day - I would have picked San Andreas

Fuck, I've got less than a week.  No way can I get a list done anytime next week with me packing and shit.

EDIT - Okay - now I remember what Aloha is. But still of the two movies opening that day - I would have picked San Andreas

As per our discussion, I think that Ant-Man will be my most stunning omission.  I have no idea how AoU hype / backlash will help or hinder the box office take.

Ok, now that I've had the chance to put these into a spreadsheet, we have some issues:

Ligerbusa's RT list only has 14 movies (it's numbered 1-15 but there is no #6)

ivpvideos' RT list has 16 movies

Natural's box office and RT lists both only have 14 movies.

Everyone else is good.  I'll PM the relevant parties.

Will also post about my brilliant reasons for leaving out Pitch Perfect 2 and San Andreas later tonight.

Also why isn't Pitch Perfect 2 on the list? and can I write it in for my list?

For the second question, no, sorry.  If I let people write in movies, it'd be possible for people to make things very easy for themselves by picking movies that are going to be terrible.

Yeah - Pitch Perfect 2 might be the most stunning omission

Actually AND San Andreas not being there

And I have no idea what Aloha is

EDIT - Okay - now I remember what Aloha is. But still of the two movies opening that day - I would have picked San Andreas

We all know I've been wrong before about what gets into the pool, but here's what I was thinking.

Pitch Perfect 2 was on the list in the planning stages (due to Rippa posting on here that he was going to see it) but got swapped out for Hot Pursuit.  It was mostly because I don't see PP2 beating Avengers 2 or Mad Max in box office on its opening weekend, which means it'll be third at best, and it's not a shoo-in to get a higher RT score than those two movies either.  It just doesn't seem like it's going to be a heavy hitter to me.

San Andreas was never on the list.  It's like, I saw Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous still gets brought up enough on here to make me think Crowe's name still carries some weight) directing this movie with Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray, John Krasinski - a very deep cast.  Then I look at San Andreas and it's just the Rock and no other names of note.  Aloha sounded way more interesting to me.  There was a time where San Andreas would have been an automatic inclusion just for starring a wrestler, but... has Rock delivered anything really memorable when he has to carry a movie on his own?  In retrospect, if I'd left out Hercules last year, I doubt anyone really would have cared.  Granted it's almost certainly going to make more money than Aloha, but I also think some people are going to be like "I just saw the Rock in an action movie, I'm not interested in another one so soon."

Also, no one is going to call me on this, but I had a personal rule that I'd never put another Adam Sandler movie in the pool.  But Pan, which was opening opposite Pixels, got moved to October, and I couldn't bring myself to put Southpaw on the list.  I have a sneaking suspicion that Southpaw's going to get moved to the fall, too.

I think the only way Southpaw gets moved to the fall is if Fuqua's fliming of the Magnificient Seven remake runs longer than expected, which is certainly possible. It's suppose to end right around the time Southpaw is coming out.

I think PP2 will probably beat Mad Maxx since Mad Max is R and PP2 will have all the house moms and teenage girls and me going to it.

The Rock movies are always fun just because they are total list busters. Not having to decide on San Andreas is fine with me.

That being said - I think a Cameron Crowe movie doesn't mean as much as it used to.

God - I still have to put together my fucking list.

Man we could almost do a NIT type contest with all the leftover movies
