MARCH 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

Gunn was like many other guys who goes pushed every which way until the only way to go was out. Okay, I guess, at a lot of things but had to change his gimmick every year to keep him fresh and/or no one gave a shit.

Cody Rhodes has that honour now and I can't fuckin understand why they are so determined to make a guy who has to be geting an uber push to get a reaction. Besides the obvious fact that he came out of Dusty. Nepotism is alive and well outside of the top spots on the show.

Demott was let go from DS in 07 for the same shit, yes.

Everyone was super confused when they rehired him for the Performance center

And even more confused he lasted this long. It appears they let him resign to save face. Someone in the higher ups in the WWE must really like him. So many others have been fired for less.

And as a Jericho fan, I'm disappointed that he would defend demott. No place for bullying. There's other ways to push your students.

It says a lot about Cody that the most over he ever got was when he grew an intentionally bad moustache.

Somehow I found myself reading winners of awards from the Wrestling Observer and under the category of Worst Worked Match, 1985's winner was Lou Albano vs. Freddie Blassie for some match they had at the Nassau Coliseum. It was apparently a steel cage match. Is there any video/film of this match anywhere or pictures?

See this is the kinda stuff they should have on the Network. Bring back the old legends round table and have them shoot on something like this. Who was booking in the first place and who thought it would be a good idea to do a mini feud with those two (over the manager of the year award) and have a cage match in Long Island to boot? It's like the mini feud that Fuji and Heenan had in 1991. Fuji attacks Heenan at MSG and they have a match at Nassau.

I feel like Billy Gunn gets a lot of unfair criticism. He's underrated, if anything.

He was over three different times, with three different gimmicks. All in tag teams. He's the definition of a "tag team specialist" to me. Which is impressive.

The Smoking Gunns, The New Age Outlaws and Billy & Chuck were all over.

Where Gunn failed was when they tried to present him as a singles competitor.

If anything makes me feel better about the future of the WWE, it's Bill DeMott getting demoted to pencil pusher and seeing Giant Bernard happy to be a trainer. And if Billy Gunn is a great trainer, awesome, you can forget any of the crap his career has produced. Not everyone can be Billy Robinson and get their cake and eat it too.

It's very uncomfortable for me to hear otherwise-sensible and smart people like Bryan Alvarez, Andrew Goldstein and Lance Storm (somewhat) defend DeMott over the past few days because 1) "Hey, we weren't there" and 2) "they used to do this stuff in the old days of wrestling."

Yeah, you weren't there, but everyone else who was is essentially saying the exact same thing. Are they all lying?

I fail to see how people being racially and physically abusive in "the good ol' days" makes it OK to do it now, either. Abuse is abuse.

The reluctance of people to criticize him is probably part of why he got away with his antics for so long. People are always lying up to excuse inexcusable behavior.

All of this just makes me wish DeMott had been a trainer when Brock Lesnar was starting off. Brock doesn't exactly strike me as the kinda dude who would give a flying fuck about the threat of release for removing DeMott's head from his body.

But then I don't think DeMott would pull that shit with rookie Lesnar, he'd probably take one look at him and offer to carry his bags.

Unless Brock was hurt then he'd fuck with him.

Where did Alvarez defend Demott?

There are a few big problems with defending Demott:

- There were many many incidents mentioned. I can understand arguing against one or two of them, but there had to have been 5-7 incidents mentioned by Judas. That's not counting past incidents, such as the stinkface incident or some of the other stuff. It would be really hard to say each incident was "framed" or was misunderstood.

- No one has come out to defend Bill in any of the incidents. Sure, Jericho said Bill was a great guy, but that has nothing to do with each incident. Bill would need someone else who was actually there to give that side of the story. Hey, I'm a great guy too but I've been in the wrong in incidents before.

- Tough Enough did not do Bill any favors. Bill came across as exactly the guy everyone is saying he is.

- WWE has not done Bill any favors in this whole process. From our perspective, WWE knew this was going on, didn't care, did a lousy investigation once they were forced and still hasn't really admitted any fault. WWE is just as bad here if not worse, but WWE is a corporation and without individual names, they can get away with it.

- It's 2015 and we are very PC. In the court of public opinion, any time a racial/homophobic slur is brought up, you've pretty much lost automatically. There really is no reason to use any racial or homophobic terms and you have to actually choose to use them. You can control everything that comes out of your mouth.

If Brock had two broken legs and broken arms, I would not fuck with him.

I remember back in 2000, Eddy Guerrero put over Demott as a great talent/person on WON radio. There is a saying you never know somebody til you put them in power.

The question I keep thinking of, who is Demott's guardian angel is. I wondered if it was HHH, but they were not in WCW together as far as I know. He left for the WWF around the same time Hugh Morrus started.

He did work with Johnny Ace in the final days of WCW, when Ace was the top agent laying out finishes. Which explains the stuff in Deep South but not nXt,.

Help me out here Midge.

His protector might be Kevin Dunn.  According to DeMott's shitty book, Dunn requested him on the last season of Tough Enough after his firing because he liked him so much on the previous season.  This was after the DSW firing.

I was thinking about how insane this would be in a non-wrestling environment. Can you imagine if an employee in your office was:

- Making racist and homophobic remarks

- Kicking people

- Bringing in a gun to work

- Ripping people's clothes or destroying them

- Calling people all sorts of names and other obscenities

They wouldn't last a day.

As someone who was a fat, meek child I can tell you bullies are great at reading people.  When they sense you are someone who will put up with their shit they'll pile it on.  Someone with self confidence, or at least a willingness to fight back, they will leave alone.

I have no doubt Bill Demott chose his victims carefully and learned which people he could walk all over.  Young people, eager to impress, coming up in an industry where there's pretty much only one company you can make a living wage working for, who have also had messages like "it's a tough business" and "don't complain" and "you have to work hurt" hammered into their heads...that's fertile ground for a bully.
