MARCH 2015 WRESTLING DISCUSSION

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

This Demott thing is indicative of the larger problem in wrestling today where the people in charge of the business just refuse to acknowledge that times have changed.  They're in love with the in the romantic notions of the territory/kayfabe era and all the weird attitudes wrestlers carried around then.  Treating trainees like shit, to the point of physical abuse, is fine because of the old school mentality that this is what you're supposed to do.  Vince McMahon came up in the kayfabe era and Triple H longs for those days where it was all a big con on the dumb marks, so things aren't going to change.

Shit, even younger guys who are supposed to be "different" still cling to the stupid old rules.  Look at CM Punk, who famously gets pissed at fans calling him "Phil" of even "Mr. Brooks."  That's some stuck in kayfabe shit right there.  Because "marks" with "insider knowledge" are presumptuous assholes, right?  Never mind that kayfabe is long dead.

In short, this shit's not going to improve because the people in the business treat it like it's 1974.  Everything is different now but somehow, in wrestling, it's still okay to call somebody a "faggot" and try to injure them because, fuck, man, Hiro Matsuda did it back in the day so why not?

It's a fucking tv show. Do you watch whatever else tv show you watch and expect the main character to be called by the actor's real name? Very few wrestlers have used their real names. Blame that on whatever, but pro wrestling is still a tv show with actors and parts and scripts.

Not once during Monk's all 8 seasons did someone call him Tony..

The fact that they are a publicly traded company means they have to be super sensitive about this. Heck, just throwing around the "F-Bomb" at trainees these days is really enough for termination, nevermind the physical abuse. If you work in a corporate office and are in a training class and ask the trainer a question and he calls you a faggot for not knowing and if you were to write a letter to HR about it that it would be a pussy's way out, that would be an immediate firing.

If WWE decided to push the US, IC and World titles as equal and meaningful, could it work and could the fans accept it? I know WWE wouldn't do it or anything and that it is kind of silly to suggest, but I'm just curious. I think it would lead to a plethora of booking choices and matches if it was possible. NJPW really hit a homerun with adding the IC belt, so it'd be cool if WWE could do it too.

I think that devalues the World Title though. Now if you make the US/IC title as something everyone who's not involved in the World Title picture strives for that's okay. You need a top prize that everyone should want to attain. By making the US/I/IC/WHC all equal you've now spread out the value of the top prize in the company

By the rules of pro wrestling, if you meet Tony Shalhoub in real life, you should refer to him as "Monk" because knowing his real name is frowned upon.

This is so disappointing. Jericho use to my favourite guy but between this and the shape his mid-life crisis is taking my respect for him has dropped so much,

At least you can't say he isn't loyal to his friends. You can abuse aspiring young wrestlers or kill your family over a weekend, and he will defend you to the bitter end.

I do think it's funny that Bill DeMott would have anything to say to Enzo Amore, who is already approximately 658,000x more entertaining than DeMott was on his best day...

I had figured the DeMott situation would die on the vine like so many other WWE controversies over the years, but I'll happily applaud if I'm wrong.  For a company that promotes BE A STAR, not having someone like DeMott on the payroll seems logical.  But logic usually has nothing to do with anything like this mess.

Hugh Morris always came across as a giant cockasaurus.  IT would be easy to say one of these guys should have grew a pair and just slapped the shit out of him, but they have dreams and blah, blah, blah.  It's just one more heaping pile of shit that makes me wonder why anyone would ever lower themselves and give up all self respect to work for this company.

And yet they continue to insist that their product isn't pro wrestling at all.

Good point.  So just to get it straight:

In front of the camera, it's sports entertainment.  Everywhere else, it's the same trashy carney embarrassment it's always been.

Is it acceptable to shit in someone's crown?

Not if that someone is named Harley Race.

Well of course not HIS crown. Nor King Haku's crown. I guess we're just left with the following Kings: Duggan, Lawler, Bret, Owen, Mabel, Austin, Hunter, Shamrock, Billy Gunn, Lesnar, Sheamus, Regal

Yeah, you can't have guy's take bumps wearing helmets and then turn around and preach about the old-school way of doing things. There's a difference between being a hard-ass and just being an awful, abusive coach. DeMott seems like the latter.

With all the "tradition" of feces related backstage ribs, I'm a little surprised Vince Russo never gave a guy the gimmick of "Brown Thunder" John Latrine, who started feuds with people by surruptitiously taking shits in their personal effects only to have them discover it at inopportune moments during backstage interviews, meetings with the boss, during matches, etc. causing them to lose the match in question or fail in whatever task or machination they were attempting, spinning them off into a new feud with Brown Thunder.

It's gross, it's stupid, it turns backstage issues into on-camera angles, it's a character who could turn heel (or face) at any time with no buildup depending on who the latest victim is, it's the perfect Russo idea.

Oh and to keep it germaine to the current topic I will of course envision Bill DeMott being the man given this gimmick. :)

The name might arguably be an improvement over Hugh Morris/"Major" Hugh G. Rection

if true, that Rusev incident is pretty telling, smacks of bitter has-been/never was trying to get over in his own mind on someone who's already better/more over/a bigger priority to a promoter than he ever was or could be, and waiting until the guy's injured/can't fight back to pick on him.

It'd be a solid angle/heel behavior if it were part of the show, but of course it isn't.  Double illustration of the company's woes that it's happening backstage instead of on-camera.

Didn't he do a gimmick where someone kept getting diarrhea before their matches?

Probably.

Though I could just be thinking instead of the angle where Shane Douglas needed viagra and was feuding with a much younger man (Kidman?  Karageis?) who didn't.

Or Darren Drozdov's "puke on command" gimmick.

The worst angle in early ROH:  "Who shit in the Carnage Crew's bags?"

That really happened. Don't remember if there was ever a pay-off.

To change the subject:

http://www.wwe.com/inside/wwe-divas/blue-pants-interview

Leva Bates gets a WWE.com interview and she's still NOT signed with the company. I feel like there needs to be more of a push to get her officially in the company I mean Blue Pants is either the most over or second most over babyface woman in NXT and she's not actually on the roster.

Yeah, but Punk brought that whole "Phil Brooks vs Paul Levesque" bullshit himself. So he has no right being pissy about it!
