WWE NETWORK GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD

RIPPA

Recommended Posts

So most of the 2007 RAW is now up on the Network.  So I decided to see what was shown on June 25th 2007 the night after the Benoit murders and it is a best of show featuring the best title matches of the year hosted by Todd Grisham.  My memory is foggy but I don't remember it being a best of show.  If it was a best of it was a best of Benoit.   Was there a west coast version that was different than the live one?

Edit:  It was the International version of the show for that week.

Looks like JBL interview series has some interesting guests coming up. Bruno, Stan Hansen, Jimmy Hart, Sting.

It also looks like WWE is going through another "bury Hulk Hogan" cycle.

Awesome. I really enjoy these.

How so, what'd they do now?

During the JBL/Booker T interview, they spent a decent amount of time discussing the Hogan tapes, which I didn't think much of because Booker had a relevant story (that didn't paint Hogan in a flattering light). Then during the previews for the upcoming episode, one clip featured Bruno talking about how he was never impressed with Hogan, and another showed JBL asking Jimmy Hart if he thought Hogan was racist.

While I don't feel bad for the old Hulkster who clearly brought this on himself, one of the worst things about these WWE-sanctioned interviews is the absurd level of apologism for the company and its management and the constant re-assertion that they would never do anything that's culturally insensitive. It's a fair question to ask Booker what he thought about the Hogan tapes, but why not ask him about that Survivor Series 05 segment where Vince dropped the N-bomb in front of him and Sharmell? I'd bet that's still on the network and available for 9.99 even. To me, it looks like they're just using a facade of racial awareness to bash one guy specifically.

Pretty sure we're going to hear Bruno tell the "I sold out every arena all the time but Hogan?  He could only sell out once!  And when he'd come back the next time, the houses would be down.  The fans got sick of him!  And then Vince asked me to come back because Hogan couldn't draw" story that I think he has told on every single Observer interview he's ever done.

The Hardys vs. E/C cage match from Unforgiven 2000 is really really good you guys.

It incorporates a lot of classic southern tag and blood feud features into the "TLC extreme" style. They put a great twist on the FiP/hot tag trope where Jeff gets isolated outside the cage while Matt is double teamed inside. The match is built around Jeff struggling to get back in the cage and they pay it off when he finally uses a ladder to get the top and hits a big dive. The Hardys and Lita all get significant measures of retribution against E/C who had tormented them for months for a feel-good title win. There is a great sense of urgency throughout the match, and every setup gets a cool payoff. The match has hate, blood, big spots, a good pace, and a coherent story that makes everything about the Hardys' win mean something. A forgotten classic from the TLC era for sure.

That new '89 NWA show is weird as hell, solely because Billy Gunn and Gangrel are both jobbers on it and look ridiculous because they're synonymous with they're famous gimmicks.

Oh, and because that Steamboat "workout match" (which features an out of shape, rookie Dustin Rhodes) is incredibly stupid. It's neck and neck with Piper's from '97.

I just watched that one too. Watching Gangrel getting squashed by Abdullah the Butcher was not how I envisioned my Saturday morning but there it was. And if Kip Montana isn't a pornstar name I don't know what is.

What I noticed was the immediate quality upgrade as far production when Turner buys the promotion. Makes its much easier to watch.

Hopefully they put up the Center Stage 89 stuff as that was an awesome period for the NWA.

On the 03/25/89 episode of NWA Wrestling, who was that breakdancin' Vincent Young that teamed with Dick Murdoch?

Chief Jay Strongbow's kid. Also did WWF job duty as Mark Young and did an All Japan tour or two. I think he was in and out of the business within a couple of years.

Thanks for that. Found a pretty good match of his against Barry Horowitz with Shane as referee. Lord Alfred even mentions Chief Jay as his trainer.

The theme song was the same one that they used for the NWA episode dubbing....it's interesting and kind of neat to me that they've held onto such an obscure theme song from 1989 in their archives, kinda makes me wonder what other gems they have in there.

Looks like they just moved over the three events (Hardcore Heaven 95, N2R 95, and Cyberslam 96) that they had added during that ECW week they did a year ago from the Vault over to the PPV section, so nothing new to the Network added yet.

Though keeping my fingers crossed that this means they're adding more ECW Home Video content, I'm not getting my hopes up too much.

Thoughts on In Your House 10: Mind Games

Jim Cornette getting squashed by Jose Lothario was the perfect result. Then Clarence Mason signed away Owen and Bulldog from the half-conscious Cornette and promptly led them to the tag team title.

Owen and Bulldog did their best to get a face reaction from the Philly crowd, even though Mason was managing them. However, defacing the giant photo of Sunny just didn't seem like something they would do. Sunny firing the Gunns after one loss didn't make sense either.

Savio Vega beat Marty Jannetty on the Free-For-All match and then beat Bradshaw in a Caribbean Strap match. After sitting through 4 Savio matches one year earlier at King of the Ring, the Philadelphia fans had to wonder, "why is Savio only being shoved down our throats?"

Mankind gets the MVP award for his injection of "Extreme" into the WWF title scene. That match was already amazing, but when Mankind and HBK both went off the top rope through a table, the match reached 5 stars. Only the nonsensical Vader DQ dropped it down from that level.

If it weren't for Foley, the award would go to Jerry Lawler for working his hardest to make the debuting Mark Henry look as good as possible. The New Rockers and Hunter Hearst Helmsley also got bounced around as Vince swung for the fences on Henry's debut.
