Wimbledon announced that all players from Russia and Belarus will be barred from playing in this year's tournament

Quote

The call means men's world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev and women's world No. 4 Aryna Sabalenka -- who reached the semifinals last year at Wimbledon -- are prohibited from playing.

This has a huge impact on both the men's and women's singles draws at Wimbledon. On the men's side, it prevents Australian Open finalist and No. 2 Medvedev from competing, as well as No. 8 Andrey Rublev, No. 24 Karen Khachanov and No. 30 Aslan Karatsev. The top-ranked Belarusian on the men's side is No. 42 Ilya Ivashka.

On the women's side, five of the top 40 are affected. World No. 15 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Daria Kasatkina (No. 26) and Veronika Kudermetova (No. 29), all of Russia, will sit out this year's competition. The decision also prevents Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka (No. 4) and former world No. 1 and current No. 18 Victoria Azarenka from competing.

The ATP/WTA are against this for now, and are hinting it is discrimination by nationality.

Apparently, the Ukranaian tour players want the Russian and Belarussian players to publicly state if they are for or against the war/government/Putin.

Even for a red haired, light skinned German kid who played Tennis as a kid, it has been long since obvious everything Becker did after he retired tore down and destroyed his legacy.

As to why?

He was a huge star as a teenager, never had a shot at growing up before being under the microscope. Whoever took care of him when he was active seemingly dropped him like a bad habit after his playing career. Going the Ric Flair route with lots of wives/gfs probably did not help.

But while it's all understandable to a degree, it's just so sad and embarrassing.

Just to tag onto the Becker stuff, I will share one of the best stories about him growing up.  I was at the Lipton one year and my friends and I saw he was playing a doubles match, so we went over we were, shall we say, less than impressed by his effort and appearance.  Looking back, it's clear he was miserable because he was hungover to the point that whoever his partner was, said something to him like 'come on man you gotta get that.'  To which he replied, 'Oh fuck off.  It's doubles. I just want to go home.'    He stayed cranky until the end when they lost and as he was leaving, my friend says he heard him say 'Fuck this man, it's Miami.  Sleep all day, fuck all night.'

Anyway....  Chris Evert update:

 Ring the fucking bell, indeed.

A callback to simpler times in Tennis-related entry matters: the incumbent  Australian government got voted out today (the margin right now is 72-50-15 with 14 seats uncalled). So check back in a few months for how Novak still won’t be let back into Australia for 2023.

First massive upset happened in the French:

Defending champ Barbora Krejcikova was knocked out in the first round.

Naomi Osaka is also out in the first.  She lost in straight sets and is 'leaning towards' skipping Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal is in his 14th Men's French Open Final, he's never lost one after Alexander Zverev had to retire hurt from a fall needing a wheelchair. It's a bad injury.

That's a terrible way for a semi final to end. The crazy part was that the match was already3 hours long and they were still in the second set. God knows how long it would have taken if Zverev had won the set.

This. First set was 90 minutes with Nadal saving four set points.

It's a 30th Grand Slam final for Rafael Nadal. He's won 21 of his previous 29. Incredible numbers.

Said this before and will again, beating Rafael Nadal at the French Open is the toughest task in all sports and of the toughest of all time. 13 French Open wins. 111 wins, 3 losses. The 3 losses:

Robin Soderling, 4th Round 2009.

Novak Djokovic, Quarter-finals 2015.

Novak Djokovic, Semi finals 2021.

Staggering numbers.

Top seed Iga Swiatek underlined why she was the red-hot French Open favourite by beating Coco Gauff in straight sets to win her second Grand Slam title.

Poland's Swiatek, 21, won 6-1 6-3 against the American teenager to record her 35th straight victory - equalling the longest WTA streak this century.

Gauff, 18, was contesting her first major final and made a nervy start.

Swiatek, who also won Roland Garros in 2020, took full advantage and went on to win her sixth successive title.

By fighting back from a break down in the second set, Swiatek won the 56th of her past 58 sets.

She also maintained her streak of winning in finals, extending that record to nine in a row.

What a run.
