The Really Swell News Thread

Recommended Posts

My boo passed her Security+ exam last Friday.  I am both happy and relieved at the same time..

We're going up to NYC this weekend to celebrate her sister's birthday and what feels like the victorious end to a decade long ordeal.

Two pieces of good health news for my Mom this last week:

1) The large growth they removed from her breast was non-cancerous and should not come back.

2) The arterialeroil stenosis found on her echocardiogram was very mild, and the cardiologist doesn't see a need to do anything right away since they just changed some of her cholesterol medication. We'll see him again in six months.

I am going to have a grandson! Well, in white-folks-speak the term would be "grand-nephew", but the Navajo language does not acknowledge the concept, so the progeny of one's brothers and sisters-in-law are "grandchildren" as are their children, maybe doesn't make as much sense, but it is easier to keep track of. On the other hand, my older brother-in-law whose son's girlfriend is having the baby is referred to as "Grandpa", whereas I get called simply "Papa". Anyway, they've been trying for a decade to have a second child and were hoping for a boy, so we're just thrilled for them. Best of all the due date is July, so the baby might show up on my birthday or our wedding anniversary and wouldn't that just be too cool!

So I'm coaching my nephew's Little League team again this year. It's 8 year old Coach pitch where we don't keep score and just play to teach the game. Last year it was a team full of 6-7 year olds who were being introduced to the game, and this year it's mainly the kids who took a liking to it and want to play baseball. We had our first practice the other day and I was the only coach who could make it.

It was still like herding cats, but what made it easier was that their crazy kid energy was all focused on playing baseball. We just did initial base running and had them line up in two lines and play catch. And most of them are pretty good, so it's going to be easier to focus on who needs more help.

Yeah, that's my emotional "Aww" thing to say while I'm thinking "We're gonna be good. I'll probably keep score in my head."

After a year of defeat and disappointment, it looks like I'm finally getting a new job!  I interviewed on Wednesday, and I heard the HR person tell one of the other people in the office "We have five interviews today" so that told me that there were five applicants.  I get a call later that day telling me that I've been selected for a position, pending a drug test. I don't do any of that stuff, and I don't like poppy seeds, so I'll definitley pass it.

Does that mean we can all call you "Gramps"?

Congratulations. Before he died, my dad said one of the biggest thrills of his life was just getting to be a grandpa.

So you know how the UK Government is introducing legislation to stop under 18s from accessing adults only websites? The way they're doing it is, everyone who wants access has to go to a shop and buy a pass (for ten quid!), and the person working behind the counter will verify their age. Whether they turned 18 yesterday of fifty years ago, everyone is in the no pass = no access.

Well. Guess who's shop is going to be selling passes? Yeah. My shop. And I do all the late shifts*, when the sleazebags are awake. This is going to be awesome! I have power of attorney over the whole town's Porn consumption!

* Five out of seven, anyway.

You may call me "Gramps" if you are exceedingly fleet of foot.

LOL

Practice your stern, disapproving look.  Maybe work in a slow, judgmental, disappointed head shake as well.

Maybe your shop can work out a bundle deal and package some lotion with the passes.

Alternatively, buy ten of them myself, then sell them outside the high school for double the actual price. Not that I'd actually do that, but I've worked with people who totally would. If it had occurred to them, which it probably wouldn't.

Astonishing that the minds behind this scheme can't figure out how to Brexit.

Well, you have to bear in mind that the people who were talking up the benefits and ease of leaving the European Union were generally liars, idiots, or lying idiots.

One, that's a stupid law that I'm willing to bet thousands of teenagers find a way around.

Two, you forgot idiotic liars. 😉

I am a dad!

My wife and I adopted our beautiful and amazing son about six weeks ago. We had been waiting to adopt for about two years. We got a phone call at 10 pm on a Sunday night. We brought our son home the next evening. We became parents with about 16 hours notice. But he is the best and being a dad is amazing.

Congratulations! Sounds like how my brother and then-wife got their second son. "If you don't take him, he'll go into the foster system." "We'll be right there!"

Never mind. The policy has been delayed indefinitely.

OK, indefinitely delayed has now been shortened to 'Delayed by six months'. Brilliantly, they've still added the actual vouchers to the system, even though nobody can possibly use one until 2020 now.
