October 2014 NHL Thread - The Quest for Lord Stanley's Cup Begins

Caught up on Wings games last night on Gamecenter:

vs Boston - Ugh, the NBCSN announce crew. These guys make me wish I was deaf. Jimmy Howard stands on his head to get it to OT then does his usual "flop face first and pray I get lucky" routine during the shootout. Good Lord, he's horrible in those. Mike Babcock shows off his coaching genius by not getting Gus Nyquist a shift on an OT power play, then putting a rookie grinder (Nestrasil) up first on the shootout. Well done, Mike. And just to remind everybody that the Bruins were playing, the refs watched Zdeno Chara slash multiple players on the Red Wings bench and didn't call a penalty. And the NHL wonders why people think their refs are terrible.

vs Toronto - dominant effort from Detroit. Zetterberg had four assists after being invisible against Boston. Franzen had two goals. And Nyquist scored again. Excellent effort.

So far, so good from Detroit. Without a horrible call against Anaheim, they'd have points in every game. Howard has been real good. Nyquist has been lights-out. The defensive core that was so atrocious last year has been very good. Waaaaaaay fewer r giveaways and better coverage. The PK has been perfect. Need more goal scoring but that may come when Pavel comes back.

Am off to Devils home opener, where I plan to make a deal with NJ Devil. In exchange for my soul he will give the Sabres Connor McDavid and throw in a donut. I plan to get out of it on a technicaity by only eating most of the donut and saving the rest. Also I'm throwing in a bottle of geritall for Jagr to balance out the deal.

Sold my ticket to Rangers-Devils to a guy I met on way home, so I can go to Leafs-Isles in Nassau on Tuesday Instead. Conflict averted. Much rather see JT. And for those of you awaiting news of the Devils new goal song, it's basicly the Green Day riff the Canucks used to use played at a decible level designed to drown out any fans trying to do the "you suck" chant (which is the reason R&R Part 2 and the one they introduced this year. They actually tried to claim they dropped the one song b/c Glitter is a kid toucher but their own staff told me otherwise.). And hey, check it out: The Who and Pete Townseed (who was busted for kiddie porn) are playing Pru Center in January!

That cross ice pass to Callahan on the PP after getting a new stick was ridiculous, doubly so because he masked it as a wrist shot to freeze Lack and the penalty killers.

This was particularly great because Stamkos broke his stick then Stamkos got another stick then Stamkos got the puck then Stamkos passed the puck to where Stamkos would have been standing if Stamkos hadn't broken his stick. Then Stamkos got an assist.

Stamkos.

Had to wait 48 hours to watch it on Gamecenter because it was on national TV or something but...

Detroit vs Toronto from Saturday - HOLY COW, what a game!  As good and exciting as a 0-0 (through regulation) game can possibly be.  Great goaltending on both sides, great skating, the whole nine yards.  And the crowd at the Joe was as loud as you'll ever hear it, due in no small part to a large contingent of Leafs fans.  Absolutely spectacular game with Zetterberg scoring the game winner with 9.9 seconds left in OT.  THAT, my friends, is why I ponied up for Gamecenter this year!

Going to Ottawa, Toronto, Columbus and Detroit for games sometime next year. Anyone have any travel tips for those particular cities (such as places to see, things to do). Particularly want to know if anything in the capital (govt buildings, museums ect.) are opened on weekends. Also, is the HHOF worth going out of my way to see?

If you go around this time of year, Ottawa can be gorgeous to just explore on foot or bicycle. Especially along the Rideau Canal. Ditto along the Ottawa River. For Museums, the Canadian Museum of History (formerly Civilization) across the river in Gatineau is probably the best option, although if you can double up and go to the war museum as well (they're within walking distance of each other), that would make a busy day. Of course, after today, any experience I had touring Parliament Hill is probably moot.

And you can waste way too much time at the Hockey Hall of Fame and still not feel like you've spent enough time there. A must for any hockey fan to experience at least once.
